North Gets: Slave trade prohibited in Washington D.C. Texas loses boundary dispute w/ New Mexico. South Gets: Slaveholding permitted in D.C. Texas gets $10 million. No slave restrict in Utah or New Mexico territories. Kansas – Nebraska Act Would Kansas/Nebraska be a free or slave state? Kansas – Nebraska Act: • Voters in KA/NE would decide if slavery would be permitted. • Pro slavery & abolitionists flew to Kansas to sway the vote. • Kansas became a free state & Nebraska became a free state. Dred Scott v. Sanford • Dred Scott sued his master to get his freedom after master moved to a free state. • Supreme Court decision was 7-2 against him saying that he was not a citizen, and was not free.
