Compromise of 1850
This compromise held off the war
for a few years…
• California admitted as free state.
• Fugitive slave law.
• New states have Popular Sovereignty:
would decide for themselves to have
slavery or not.
North Gets: Slave trade prohibited in
Washington D.C. Texas loses
boundary dispute w/ New Mexico.
South Gets: Slaveholding permitted in
D.C. Texas gets $10 million. No slave
restrict in Utah or New Mexico
territories.
Kansas – Nebraska
Act
Would Kansas/Nebraska be a free or slave
state?
Kansas – Nebraska Act:
• Voters in KA/NE would decide if slavery
would be permitted.
• Pro slavery & abolitionists flew to Kansas
to sway the vote.
• Kansas became a free state & Nebraska
became a free state.
Dred Scott v. Sanford
• Dred Scott sued his master to get his
freedom after master moved to a free
state.
• Supreme Court decision was 7-2 against
him saying that he was not a citizen, and
was not free.
Election of 1860
• Republicans opposed slavery
• Lincoln, wins election
• Sent signal to South that slavery days
were coming to an end
Secession
• Secession seen as right to Overthrow
bad government.
• Seen as way to address problems
• Some Georgians wanted secession
and some didn’t
• When Lincoln elected, southerners
felt it was time to secede
