Listen Up! instructor index I have always admired good listeners and aspire to be a better one myself. It is an important quality, I think, both personally and professionally. We often learn more from listening than talking and so I have spent quite a bit of time this past year striving to be a better listener to my family, friends, and our workshop participants. I have learned and have grown from all this listening. As The Workshops enters its 27th year, all of us on staff have listened well to our participant’s comments and we are putting many of these suggestions into place in 2016. A few of the significant changes you will see are our new two-week workshops, an expanded Master Class program, and even more travel destinations. Among your most popular requests for future programs have been longer workshops and even smaller class sizes than our standard maximum of 14. For Summer 2016, we offer three workshops in the new two-week long format —lighting, the complete digital workflow, and multimedia— to give you an even more in-depth educational experience. We’ve added more of our limited enrollment, advanced-level Master Classes, including workshops in San Miguel de Allende. And last, but certainly not least, to complement our existing programs in San Miguel and Cuba, we are opening new travel destinations to Japan, Cartagena, and the Yucatán. We have listened and have been inspired and energized by your comments and suggestions. We hope you are as excited by our changes and new offerings as we are and invite you to join us for a week (or two!) that will change your life. All my best wishes, Reid Callanan, Director, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops GENERALINFORMATION © Taylor Welch Tuition Tuition for “in season” workshops (June 26-Aug. 5) includes a meal plan of a Sunday evening Welcome Cocktail Reception with appetizers, breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, and dinner at the Friday evening Image Presentations. The world’s leading photography tools use Adobe Photoshop technology to help you craft incredible images every day, everywhere — whether you’re a beginner or a pro. It’s everything you need. All in one place. Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan Learn more at: adobe.com/creativecloud/photography.html PK: When I became a photographer, I pushed myself to learn and improve by taking at least one workshop, seminar, or class every year. I noticed during just about every workshop, the instructor or another participant would mention Santa Fe Workshops. The Workshops are clearly held in very high regard and my curiosity led me to take a studio lighting workshop in 2008. SFPW: What was your experience like at The Workshops? PK: It truly was a photographic awakening for me. I took one workshop and left wanting to experience more of the amazing photographic community there. In 2009, I returned to Santa Fe Workshops to spend nine weeks as a seasonal staff member. It was the first time I had spent such an extended time with so many other photographers. I flourished personally and creatively and made invaluable connections. I was thrilled to be invited back to teach six years later. SFPW: How did your photographic career evolve? PK: Learning photography is one thing, but becoming a photographer is another. My path to making photography an actual lucra- © 2015 Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights reserved. Although I enjoyed aspects of it and my clients were always happy, I didn’t love it and I wasn’t producing my strongest photographic work. When I realized this, I put my photographic career on pause to focus on producing the work I was most interested in. Over the years, aside from developing as a photographer, I was also building a significant social media presence. My involvement was perfectly timed with the social media boom and the birth of influencer marketing. It was partially being in the right place at the right time, but it was also years of laying the groundwork, developing my skills, and building a following. Today, I make my living as a photographer and work with clients ranging from tourism boards and airlines to magazines and big brands. SFPW: What advice do you have for others interested in a photographic career? PK: Don’t underestimate the power of social media. As always, learn the craft of photography, find your voice, and tell your stories. But if you want more eyes on your work, you have to share it with the world in a way that most people consume these days. After five years, and having taken over 1,000 photographers to Cuba, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops is a seasoned leader in overcoming the language barriers and navigating the complexities of traveling in this communist country. Kip Brundage, Director of Cuba Programs for Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and our team of Havana-based Cuban photographers provide their expert knowledge of the country and guide you behind the tourist veil. A world-renowned photographer who provides insight and shares their photographic knowledge leads each program. Our small group sizes of not more than 15 travelers encourage authentic, compelling educational and photographic visits to dance and artist studios, ballet rehearsals, local homes, boxing gyms, privately-owned farms, and specially arranged musical performances, to name a few of the well-planned events and locations that we have unique access to. In alliance with Cuba’s premier photographic organization, Fototeca de Cuba, and its director, Nelson Ramírez, our unique programs allow U.S. participants to learn about Cuba’s long and colorful history and engage directly with Cubans from all walks of life. Now truly is the time to experience the ever-changing enigma known as Cuba. You’ll discover that Cuba represents not just another travel opportunity, but the chance to become richer in thought, spirit, and vision, both as a person and as a photographer. True to the requirements of a people-to-people General License with the U.S. Treasury Department, our programs in Cuba focus on educational exchanges with the Cuban people and recording their amazing lives with our cameras. left: © Jennifer Spelman below: © Linda Franklin, © Jennifer Spelman, © Jennifer Spelman The interactions with Cuban people and the local environment were extremely “ “ My experience in Cuba with Santa Fe Workshops far exceeded my expectations. rewarding and so unique.
