MANIFEST DESTINY NOTES United States 1783 Gained after the United States winning the Revolutionary War with Great Britain. By Treaty of Paris 1783 Louisiana Purchase President Thomas Jefferson authorized diplomats to purchase the port of New Orleans from France for western farmers Napoleon Bonaparte of France offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory to the U.S. for $15 million in 1803 The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States Florida Andrew Jackson invaded Florida in 1818 to stop Indian attacks on the Georgia border. John Quincy Adams, President Monroe’s Secretary of State, worked out a treaty with Spain called the Adams-Onis Treaty. Spain gave Florida to the United States in exchange for a payment of $5 million. Oregon Territory This area includes the present-day states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, and parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Canada. In 1818, the United States and Britain agreed to occupy Oregon jointly. The first Americans to settle in the area were trappers known as “mountain men.” The first white American families to settle there were missionaries. The first and most well-known were the Whitmans. In 1843, Americans began to travel in covered wagons on the “Oregon Trail.” The Oregon Territory became part of the United States in 1846 after an agreement was reached with Britain known as “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight”. Texas Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836 and became the Republic of Texas. Texas tried to join the United States in the 1830s but President Andrew Jackson refused to annex Texas out of concern that it would cause a war with Mexico and the northerners disagreement with the south’s use of slavery. President Polk, who was interested in expanding the United States, agreed to annex the Republic of Texas in 1845. Famous battles-Alamo, Goliad, San Jacinto Mexican Cession After the United States annexed Texas, war broke out with Mexico. President Polk declared that Mexico has “shed American blood upon the American soil.” In 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. Mexico ceded (gave) all of California and New Mexico to the United States. The United States gave Mexico $15 million for the Mexican Cession. Thousands of Americans went to California in the “gold rush” of 1849. Mormons, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the 18400s; their route became known as the “Mormon Trail.” Gadsden Purchase The United States wanted a strip of land across southern New Mexico and Arizona for a transcontinental railroad. In 1853, Mexico sold the land, called the Gadsden Purchase, to the United States for $10 million.
