The Water Cycle eW/FS/WE/001 Water cycle cycleRain All water in nature is part of the water cycle. A cycle is like a circle. The difference between a circle and a cycle is movement. (Indicated by arrows.) In a cycle there is movement. wind condensation rain evaporation Water evaporates up from the sea. The water vapour condensate into clouds and the wind blows the clouds over the land. The clouds rain down to the earth. We cannot see water vapour. Water vapour consists of water molecules. A water molecule consists of two parts water and one parts oxygen. Water molecule As the water vapour moves water upward, the air cools and the water molecules forms water droplets. We can then see it as a cloud. We can also see condensation as: mist or fog. www.ewisa.co.za Contact: [email protected] or [email protected] www.ewater.co.za www.waterinfo.co.za www.waterinformation.co.za oxygen water oxygen water eW/FS/WE/001 Condensation Select the correct answer: With what letter does the word condensation start? Hold the child’s hand high over the spout and slowly lower it, so that they can feel the dampness of the water vapour. Hold a cold glass upside down over the spout. Show them the condensation drops on the inside. Please make sure that they understand that this experiment can be done by a teacher only. Practice the new word and write them on the board. We can see water, but when the water evaporates, we cannot see the gas. We can see water as a liquid, but not as a gas. The water from plants evaporates through their leaves. Watch how the water evaporates into water vapour. Explain that the heater can be compared to the sun as a source of heat. The wet facecloth can be compared to a water source on earth. When they are too heavy, the raindrops fall from them. Rain falls towards the earth, in a downward direction. The rain rain drops join each other and form little streams. The streams run together and join into rivers. The rivers are sometimes dammed and the water ends up in the dams. The rivers run into lakes and the sea. River Lake Beach Sea Some rainwater penetrates the soil as ground water and joins in the aquifer, which drains into lakes or the sea. The sun provides heat, so that we can be warm. The sun is a source of energy. The sun shines every day, even when we cannot see it. Some days the clouds gather between us and the sun, so we cannot see the sun. During the day the sun heats the earth. The heat of the sun makes the air around the earth warmer and drier. The water on the earth is evaporated by the sun’s heat. www.ewisa.co.za Contact: [email protected] or [email protected] www.ewater.co.za www.waterinfo.co.za www.waterinformation.co.za AA1i eW/FS/WE/001 The sun Select the correct answer: What shape is the sun?
