2017COOKIE
SALEDATES
HI GIRL SCOUTS,
The most delicious time of year is just around the corner and there are so many reasons to be excited for the 2017
Girl Scout Cookie Program. From welcoming our newest Girl Scout S’mores cookie to celebrating 100
years of the world’s largest girl-led business to providing more opportunities for our girls to build
and hone their financial expertise – this year’s sale promises to be full of adventure and fun.
Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program girls not only have a blast decorating their cookie
booths and selling alongside friends, they also learn real world skills that help them
become innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders. Through the sale, girls learn to handle
money and become self-reliant while also discovering how to bring their own values to
the business world. They learn to use their time, talents, and resources wisely to grow
their business and reach their goals. They
learn the value of philanthropy and how to
make the world a better place. The Girl Scout
Cookie Program, gives girls the confidence to
achieve their dreams and the skills to make
them a reality.
And while we are all eagerly anticipating the arrival of our favorite cookies
on January 14, there is so much more than what’s in the box. Each box of
Girl Scout cookies sold represents an opportunity for girls and troops to
do amazing things. Whether it’s traveling across the world or across the
state exploring new cultures and customs, donating items and serving
dinner at a local soup kitchen, or spending a week at one of our summer
camps discovering the magic of the great outdoors – our girls are able to
have amazing experiences thanks to the support raised each year
through the Girl Scout Cookie Program.
Lisa with 2016 Top
Sellers, left to right,
Madeline, Jenna,
Ruth, and Shelby.
As you cheer on your Girl Scouts during this year’s sale, remember that
every weekend spent at a cookie booth and every goal reached is helping her become a girl of courage, confidence,
and character. Remind customers that their purchase is an investment in girls and girl leadership and provides life
changing experiences that show every girl and every voice can make an impact on the world.
Every day I am inspired by the work and leadership of our girls. The way they seek out new adventures and
experiences, the way they challenge themselves to be bold and courageous, and the way they give back to their
communities and to the world. They lead with spirit, passion, empathy, and confidence, building a brighter future for
us all.
I hope you’ll join me in encouraging our Girl Scouts to set goals, build important life skills, and discover what a cookie,
and a Girl Scout, can truly do. Here’s wishing all of our girls, families, and volunteers a fun and successful cookie sale!
Yours in Girl Scouting,
LISA JONES

COCO
Using COCO for Online Marketing and Orders
COCO is one of the MOST IMPORTANT tools in your cookie sale. It’s your online "Cookie Command"
center for your cookie business. COCO allows you to:
• Set your goal of how many packages of cookies you want to sell this year.
• Make plans for how you will reach your goals.
• Check how you're doing along the way.
• Send e-Cards to your friends and family to tell them it's cookie time and ask for
their support.
• Allow customers to purchase cookies, pay online, and have them shipped
directly to their door!
Be sure to visit your troop's page in COCO for important messages from
your troop leader. You can also see what your friends are doing and even
send them cheers to help them along!
Starting January 14 girls can visit www.abcsmsartcookies.com, hover over
Girl at the top of the page, then select the correct age for your girl, and then
click on COCO Cookie Command.
How to Register/Login:
• Click on the Register link in green towards the bottom of the page if you
need to create a new account. (If you set up a COCO account last year, it is still
active and can be logged into. There is no need to create a new account.)
• Returning girls can use their login and password fields provided on this same page
to get into their COCO account.
Girls that send 15 or more emails via COCO earn the Online patch! Remember to
download the Email Blueprint from www.nccoastalpines.org then click Cookies to see detailed
guidelines for using email and the internet in the Cookie Program.
Parents, check out www.abcsmartcookies.com for lots of great cookie sale tips, ingredient information,
hints, ideas and clip art to help advance your Girl Scout’s sales!
For detailed step by step directions on how to register in COCO and to send out the online order card,
please see below.
Each Girl Scout with at least one online order through COCOdirect earns this patch!
Get Online with COCOdirect!
1. In order to use COCOdirect either online or via the mobile app, girls must first create a user account
on COCO. All previous COCO accounts are still active so you can log back in if you already have an
account from a previous sale. To do so, visit www.abcsmartcookies.com and select COCO.
2. Girls can edit their first and last name, troop number, COCO password, and change their profile
picture within the Edit Profile section of COCO online.
3. Girls click on the “Online Marketing” tab of their COCO dashboard view to manage e-Cards. Each
season, several e-Cards are available for girls to send. Only one e-Card will send consumers to the
COCOdirect site for online orders and shipping. Be sure to select the e-Card labeled COCOdirect if
you want your customer to have the option to pay online and have cookies shipped to them.
Otherwise, standard e-Cards act like a promise order and Girl Scouts still have to deliver and collect
payment for any cookies ordered by customers.
Make it Easier with the App!
Download the COCOmobile app on your smartphone or tablet and use COCOmobile and COCOdirect
on the go! Send e-Cards and check orders directly from your phone or tablet! Visit your carrier’s app
store and search for COCOmobile to download this fantastic tool!
When accessing COCOmobile, Girls will see COCOdirect as a selection on their main menu.

The 2017 Cookie Program theme is Be Unique, Be You!, with the adorable llama as our mascot. Focusing on the
5 Skills, the program is designed to help girls grow into leaders of courage, confidence, and character while learning
five valuable life skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.
All Girl Scout troops earn proceeds for participating in the Cookie Program, which can be used to fund troop
adventures such as travel, community service projects, council-sponsored activities, and much more. Troops
earn proceeds on a scaled proceed plan based on their box-per-girl average. The more troops sell, the more they
earn. In 2016, the average troop earned more than $1,400 in proceeds!
In addition to the scaled proceed plan, each Girl Scout is eligible to earn awesome recognitions based on overall
sales. Girls earn cool patches for Walkabout Week, Operation Cookie Drop, and selling online through
COCOdirect. Girls are also eligible to earn additional rewards such as themed t-shirts, stuffed animals, and
electronics such as a GoPro Camera, Apple Watch, iPad, remote controlled drone, and so much more!
EARN WHILE YOULEARN
There’s more than just what’s in the box! Participating in the Fall Product Program and Girl Scout Cookie Program
gives girls useful skills and experiences that will last a lifetime. Plus, girls can earn some pretty cool Cookie Business

Reach your
goals with
these cool
tactics!
Now entering its 12th year, Operation Cookie Drop has made it possible to ship
nearly 800,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to our brave military men and
women serving overseas, returning from deployment, and serving throughout
our country.
Why Girls and Troops Participate:
• It’s easy and can really boost your sales! In 2016 troops earned over $50,000
in proceeds from collecting Operation Cookie Drop donations, and individual
girls added an average of 30 boxes to their sales – without having to deliver a
single box of cookies!
• Some customers don’t want to purchase Girl Scout cookies for themselves,
but want to support Girl Scouts and help you reach your sales goal. Their
donation will do just that – you earn sales credit and your troop earns
proceeds as well.
• Girls that turn in donations for 15 boxes or more ($60) receive a 2017
Operation Cookie Drop patch.
• Military troops serving overseas LOVE Girl Scout cookies – a welcome “taste
of home” when they’re thousands of miles away!
Here’s How it Works:
• Collect donations from January 14 to March 5 and give Operation Cookie
Drop money to your troop as often as possible. (Money must be turned in to
your troop in order for a girl to receive credit. Please communicate regularly
with your Troop Cookie Coordinator to make sure these sales are accurately
put in Snap for your Girl Scout.)
• Troops report their total donations at the end of the sale and the council
places a special Operation Cookie Drop order directly with the bakery.
• In May the bakery delivers cookies to the NCPacks4Patriots organization in
Ayden, the USO in Raleigh, The USO in Jacksonville, Cherry Point Marine Corps
Air Station in Havelock, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, and
Fort Bragg Army Base in Fayetteville. Cookies are then distributed to
deployed and returning personnel by the military branches.
Girls and troops must report all Operation Cookie Drop donations and cannot
use donations to pay for other cookie orders or undelivered cookies.
The Buy 5 Program
Entering its ninth year, the Buy 5 Program gives
customers the opportunity to win a year’s worth
(60 boxes) of their favorite Girl Scout cookies.
Here’s how it works:
• Customers that buy five boxes or more during
a single purchase from a girl or troop can
qualify. Donations to Operation Cookie Drop
count also!
• The girl or troop should give the customer a
Buy 5 Certificate. Each girl will be given a
supply of these certificates by her troop.
• The customer follows the instructions on the
certificate to enter their name in the online
Buy 5 Drawing.
• The council will draw the names of six winners
and ship Girl Scout cookies directly to the
winners in April.
It’s that easy! Each year many girls boost their
sales just by mentioning the Buy 5 Program to
their customers – especially customers that
originally ordered 3 or 4 boxes. Now, it’s even
easier to calculate the cost since cookies are
now sold at $4 per package – they can buy 5 for
$20! Most customers will want to purchase
another box or two just for the opportunity to
enter the drawing!

A typical Girl Scout in
COOKIES
our council sells an
average of 240 boxes
of cookies and
generates between
$120 and $160 in
proceeds for her troop! It starts with
the girl and her family committing
themselves to helping the troop achieve their
goals. Support can be offered in many ways –
like serving as the Troop Cookie Coordinator,
helping girls make cookie sale posters, staff
cookie booths, managing cookie inventory, or
helping distribute cookies, among other
things. Check with your Girl Scout troop to
see how you can help!

Who can sell Girl Scout cookies?
Can customers return cookies?
Registered Girl Scouts who have turned in a signed Permission Form
may sell Girl Scout cookies. Participation in the sale is optional.
If a customer believes that a box of cookies is in any way unsatisfactory,
the box can be returned to the troop for a replacement or a refund.
Where can girls sell cookies?
Can girls return cookies?
Girls can sell cookies within our 41-county jurisdiction. There are no
restrictions on where girls can sell door-to-door within our council (i.e.
no girl or troop has exclusive rights to any town, area, neighborhood,
or street). However, requests for cookie booths must be submitted
by the Troop Cookie Coordinator and approved by the Booth
Coordinator in the county/area in which the booth would be set up.
Once a parent/guardian signs for cookies they cannot return them
and the parent is responsible for paying for them. However,
troops and parents need to work together
to aid in getting any remaining
cookies sold to help the
troop achieve its overall
sales goal.
When should customers pay?
Customers should pay when cookies are received.
Can customers pay with a check and to
whom should it be written?
Yes, girls and troops can accept checks from customers they know
but should not accept checks from strangers or checks over $100 in
value. Parents are encouraged to work with your troop to be able to
accept credit/debit card payments from customers.
When should parents
pay for their cookies?
Parents should turn in
money weekly and by each
deadline set by their troop.
