Math Students were engaged in learning geometric concepts through the use of technology and a software program called Geometer’s Sketchpad. The program, which can be used in learning multiple areas and levels of mathematics, allowed students to construct and transform geometric shapes through Sketchpad activities in tandem with learning the concepts in math classes in a more traditional instructional format. The activities completed with Sketchpad involved the exploration of angles, parallel lines, polygons, transformations, and symmetry. Sketchpad was then used to create animations as an extension and challenge activity. Class Trip The seventh grade class trip started with a visit to the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Students viewed a film about Mother Seton’s life and then toured the Basilica and beautiful grounds. Students were able to see the historic homes where St. Elizabeth Ann Seton lived, taught, and worshipped. The students travelled by bus a few minutes down the road to enjoy a buffet lunch at the historic Carriage House Inn. After lunch, the busses followed the same route on the Emmitsburg Road that the Sisters followed when they travelled to Gettysburg to help as nurses at the Battle of Gettysburg. The students learned the stories of many soldiers and civilians during their visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. Following the viewing of the film New Birth of Freedom, and a tour of the Cyclorama, students spent time visiting the museum and researching for a project related to the school trip. The students were assigned the role of soldier, civilian, doctor, or Abraham Lincoln. Following their research at the museum, the students wrote a letter from the perspective of their character upon returning to school. The trip finished with a tour of the battlefield, during which our tour guides brought to life the battles at the cornfield, Devil’s Den, and Cemetery Ridge. The students enjoyed the chance to see cannons up close and climb monuments. Spanish The students in 7th grade Spanish learned more about the history, culture, and traditions of Spain throughout their studies this trimester. They learned about the famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and the artistic movement of cubism through his painting. The students created their own cubism drawings to represent their understandings. 7th graders also completed projects as they researched a Spanish artist of their choice and learned how their artist impacted the world and the society in which we live!
