german cloud, a safe bet
data center facts and figures
With digitization, companies increasingly use public and hybrid cloud
services. Due to security reasons, location of the cloud provider’s
data center has become the most important decision criteria according
to the latest Cloud Monitor 2016 by Bitkom, Germany’s leading digital
association. In fact, 76 % of the surveyed companies want the data center
to be located in Germany. In response, more and more international
cloud providers are expanding their offering to offer services out of
Deutsche Telekom’s high-tech data center in Biere near Magdeburg.
Opened in 2014 and to be trebled in size by 2018, the data center offers
not only the required maximum security but also provides a broad
range of options to keep compliance promises for data storage made
in Germany.
Data center space 3,600 square meters (9,000 after expansion)
20,000 physical servers in the maximum security area (50,000
after expansion)
Compliance with German data security regulations
Maximum protection against hacker and cyber attacks
– Protection by means of firewall and intrusion detection and
prevention systems, that check data streams for suspicious
elements such as malicious code
– Constant updating of security systems in cooperation with
Deutsche Telekom’s Cyber Defense Center

uncompromising sustainability
TwinCore is an important principle for ensuring maximum reliability of the
data center. Although the sites in Biere and Magdeburg are 18 kilometers
apart, they can be mirrored in parallel via a 2-terabit data link for disaster
recovery. Data is transported via dedicated, secure IP-VPN tunnels
that are separated from public networks. Overall, this results in maximum
availability of 99.999 percent. This availability level corresponds to
the Uptime Institute’s Tier 3+.
The energy mix which includes a large share of renewable energy is a
role model for today’s standards of sustainability. This ensures a safe
environment and effective resource conservation. Deutsche Telekom’s
new data center consumes one third of the energy required by other
facilities. This results in a very low PUE (power usage effectiveness)
value of just 1.3. The building meets the LEED Gold standard
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
failsafe power supply
mission impossible
for the unauthorized
The data center ensures double power supply via a dedicated substation
for all systems – even those that are not directly linked to operations,
such as safety, video and alarm systems. Provision has also been made
for the Worst Case: Even in the event of a wide-area power failure,
powerful emergency generators can maintain uninterrupted operation
for a period of at least 48 hours.

A four-meter protective wall and fences completely secure the isolated
premises. Access controls become increasingly strict when moving closer
to the high-security zones. In addition to security guard patrols, cameras
and sensors ensure permanent seamless electronic monitoring of the
entire premises. Access to data rooms is strictly controlled by means
of bridges, security airlocks, and biometric authentication.
