Colonel Coventon Corbin
The Corbin’s were originally French, or
Norman, and trace back to when William the
Conqueror of Normandy, France defeated the
Britons at the battle of Hastings in 1066 and
was crowned king of England. The Battle
Abbey Roll lists four Corbin’s as serving with
William of Normandy including Philip Corbin,
Nicholas Corbin, Robert Corbin and Margaret
Corbin.
The Normans were a group of Danish Vikings
or Norsemen (Scandinavians), who first settled
in France, then spread into England, southern
Italy, and Sicily. In the 800's Norman warriors
began their conquests by raiding French coasts
and river valleys. By the early 900's, they had
colonized the French territory near the mouth
of the Seine River that is now known as
Normandy, France.
From Normandy, France, Corbin ancestors settled in
areas near Birmingham, England. Just west of
Birmingham and Dudley is Kingswinford or Swinford
in Staffordshire, England where William Corbin and
Lady Felicia de Sutton lived. Northeast of
Birmingham is Hall End (near Polesworth and
Dordon) Warwickshire, England, where Nicholas
Corbin lived. Five generations later around 1654 Dr.
George Corbin sailed to Savage Neck, Virginia on the
Eastern Shore near present day Eastville, Virginia.
In 1655, Dr. George Corbin married Grace Savage,
daughter of John Savage. John Savage’s father was
Thomas Savage, the first permanent settler of
Virginia’s Eastern Shore in 1619. In the summer of
1608, Captain John Smith and approximately 30 men
in four boats came from the colony at Jamestown to
explore and map the Eastern Shore of Virginia. They
made contact with the Indians of the Eastern Shore
and established friendly relations with the Indian
King Debedeavon and his brother Kiptopeke.
From Savage’s Neck, the Corbin’s purchased land in
Accomac County.
