Reading Packet 32-Three Syllable Words Lesson:Reading Words with Three Syllables In this packet students will learn how to read words with three syllables. When dividing these words the rule applies to words with more than three syllables too. Rule:Dividing Three Syllable Words-Start at the Front When dividing a word with three or more syllables in order to read it, start by placing a dot on the vowels or vowel teams in the words. Then start at the beginning of the word and divide the letters in between the first two vowels. Next, divide the letters between the 2nd and 3rd vowel remembering what to do if there is 1, 2, or 3 letters between the vowels. Follow the rules for syllable division in the previous lessons. (po ta to) Rule:Three Syllables and Compound Words Three syllable words can also be compound words so always check the word to see if there are two smaller words before dividing. If the word is a compound word, divide between the two small words. Note:You may want to practice syllable division with the words in WORD READING. If a student is unable to sound out the word have everyone divide the word together. Watch out for E or I next to C.
