CE PRO 100: Speaks Volumes Literally CE Pro • © 2016 EH Publishing CE COVER STORY CE PRO 100 speaks VOLUMES ...literally CE Pro’s annual list of the highest revenue custom installation companies reports a huge jump in the volume of installations with entry-level home automation and new construction leading the way. BY JASON KNOTT F YOU SQUINT while looking at this year’s CE Pro 100, you might think: 1) You are looking at a list of security companies or 2) you have been transported back to before the housing bubble burst. The reason for this misperception is the incredible volume of installations performed in 2015 by the largest integration companies in the custom electronics industry. Overall, these integrators leaped to perform way more installations compared with 2014. The 917,610 jobs from these 100 companies (actually only 99 as one I CE Pro company did not report installation figures) is a mind-blowing 121-percent jump from the 415,514 done the prior year. While volume grew immensely, revenues also gained. The list achieved a combined $2.1 billion in revenues in 2015, representing a solid 15 percent increase from the top-line revenues of $1.84 billion in 2014. The revenues include income from installation, equipment that is sold and installed, and recurring revenue earned from residential accounts. The volume is being driven by a multitude of reasons, including the resurgent new home construction market; increased home equity that frees up cash to spend on home upgrades; a growing enthusiasm for higher-quality music feeding the need for better equipment; the transition to 4K Ultra HD TVs with High Dynamic Range; fears of terrorism compelling homeowners to want to feel safer in their homes; advanced camera technology; and more. VIVINT, BEST BUY, ADT LEAD THE WAY You don’t have to look any further than the top of the list to define the momentum of the high-volume business that home automation has become. Vivint Smart Home reported a remarkable $653.7 million in multi-subsystem revenues in 2015, up from $564 million the previous year. It was enough for the company to take over the top spot. Vivint has made a science of adding value to the foot-in-the-door 2GIG security panel, providing lighting control, thermostat control, leak detection, electronic deadbolts and other functions. Provo, Utah-based Vivint continues to set the bar in terms of spin-off services, with a thriving solar division and even tornado detection. The second of the big three is Best Buy/ Magnolia AV/Geek Squad, which had hot and cold data. Even though Best Buy is publicly held and therefore presents its annual data in a report for stockholders, it www.cepro.com KEY BENCHMARK NUMBERS $2,128,489,854 $21.3 million Total custom residentialonly revenues logged by the CE Pro 100 in 2015 Average custom revenues earned by the CE Pro 100 in 2015 917,610 Estimated total number of smart home installations done by the CE Pro 100 in 2015 15% Percentage increase in average custom revenues in 2015 vs. 2014 does not neatly break out its revenues to fit the CE Pro criteria. The company lumps custom installation into its “Services” line item, which also includes selling extended warranties. For fiscal 2015, Best Buy’s Services line item saw sales drop by 1 percent. Even worse, same-store sales of Services were down by 11.1 percent. Best Buy said the main culprit was a drop in extended warranties. On the positive side, sales of flat-panel TVs were up 3.7 percent. Many of those TVs are installed and therefore that overthe-counter revenue would count for the CE Pro 100. Best Buy also continued its “Renew Blue” austerity program in 2015, closing down two more stand-alone Magnolia AV stores while at the same time adding 34 “store-within-a-store” Magnolia Design Centers for a total of 39 locations (out of its total 1,050 domestic retail stores). Overall last year, Best Buy earned $40.339 billion in revenue with gross profit of $9 billion. Of that, $36.055 billion was in the U.S. with $8.08B in gross profit. That represents a total revenue increase of 0.6 percent vs. 2014. For the purposes of the CE Pro 100 ranking, we have conservatively dropped Best Buy’s custom revenues by 1 percent to $641.5 million. President and CEO Hubert Joly notes in the Annual Report: “Changes in the demand for our service offerings could have a materiCE Pro 120% Percentage increase in smart home installations done by the CE Pro 100 in 2015 vs. 2014. 156 Median number of multi-subsystem residential installations per company (up 9 vs. 2014) 23 $196,698 Median revenue per employee (up 28 percent vs. 2014) Median number of employees per CE Pro 100 company (up one person vs. 2014) 13 Number of CE Pro 100 companies based in California, the highest concentration of any state $28,949 Median revenue per installation (up 6 percent vs. 2014) $653.7 million Custom residential installation revenues for the No. 1 company (Vivint) 45 Number of CE Pro 100 companies with more than one business location/storefront 88 Number of CE Pro 100 companies doing commercial installations last year www.cepro.com CE COVER STORY CE PRO 100 al adverse impact on our operating results. As customers increasingly migrate to websites and mobile applications to initiate transactions, there is a risk that we are unsuccessful in effectively promoting the benefits of these complementary service offerings through those channels.” Right behind the top two companies is ADT, which reported 75 percent of its new clients in 2015 bought ADT Pulse, the public company’s home automation control system. Of course, many of its Pulse customers are not new clients, but conversions. Even still that equates to 482,000 smart home systems installations last year. Pulse has been a huge success for the company, raising its average monthly revenue per client to $44.79 while helping to cut down its attrition rate to 12.2 percent. Overall, ADT, which was recently purchased for a whopping $6.9 billion by Apollo Global Management, had total RMR (recurring monthly revenue) of $3.3 billion in 2015, a 5.4 percent increase. The company has 450 authorized dealers in addition to its own 3,600 sales consultants and 4,600 techni- cians working out of 180 offices nationwide. In total, ADT has more than 6 million customers, mostly pure security. MEDIANS TELL THE STORY For the rest of the CE Pro 100, medians tell the best story of how the marketing is doing. And for nearly every barometer, the indicators were great in 2015. As noted, the number of installations rose — to a median of 156. Median is often the best number to use for the CE Pro 100 rather than averages. Median is the figure at which half the respondents are above and half are below. This data point is less able to be skewed by very large or very small respondents. That 156 installation figure represents nine more installations than in 2014 per company. Meanwhile, the median revenue per installation grew to $28,949. That is up from $27,406 last year, or 5.6 percent. Median is the best statistic to use when looking at the price points because ADT, Vivint and Best Buy’s Geek Squad at the top of the list greatly skew the average installation. For example, ADT’s average revenue per installation (most of which is collected in RMR) is just $295. Another sign of growth is the $5 million benchmark figure. When the CE Pro 100 was introduced in 1999, the largest company did $5 million in residential custom installation revenue. This year, 47 companies on the list exceeded that $5 million number, up from last year’s 45. With the $2.128 billion total revenues, that means the average company on the list had $21.3 million in residential revenue in 2014, up about 15 percent from 2014’s $18.4 million average. Again, median is a more accurate reflection of the typical CE Pro 100 company with half the companies above and below the figure of $4.9 million in revenues. As described in previous years, many of the large players’ offerings do not make for an apples-to-apples comparison with traditional custom integrators’ solutions. Some continue to argue that they do not represent “custom installation.” However, many entrepreneurial integrators on the list are offering identical products and services at their most basic level as the large players are providing. For example, many local integrators do basic flat-panel installations and limited lighting and HVAC control tied in with a security panel. Another interesting trend is the emergence of primarily commercial A/V companies on the list. For example, Audio Visual Design Group (No. 48) in San PRODUCTIVITY KINGS OLD SCHOOL ACES RETAIL GIANTS 1. Peak Audio & Video $895,833 2. World Vision $820,000 3. HiDEF Lifestyle $666,667 4. That’s why you might notice in the listing that the company did only five installations last year — each valued at $1 million. Going back to the high-volume trend, HomePro (No. 4) is a noteworthy story. The Texas-based company does about $40 million in total revenues with $35 million coming from tons of installations with builders in the South, where new home construction is on a roll. 2016 OUTLOOK IS STRONG Optimism abounds for 2016, despite the volatile election, terrorism worries and the rollercoaster stock market. Overall, just two CE Pro 100 integrators anticipate lower revenues this year. One company is looking for a flat year, while another three declined to speculate. That means 94 of the CE Pro 100 believe revenues will be even higher in 2016. Among those who ventured to estimate what their revenue growth would be, the average growth rate expected in 19.5 percent. That is well above what is expected from the rank-and-file integrators who reported in the CE Pro State of the Industry Study last fall that they expect to grow 9.1 percent this year. CE Pro HOW COMPANIES VERIFY THEIR DATA FOR THE CE PRO 100 COMPANIES ARE ASKED to submit their financial data or have it verified by their accountant. The verification is optional. Companies were required to sign a statement (for faxed or mailed entries) that says, “the information provided is accurate and truthful.” Similar to previous years, CE Pro has selected gross revenue in multisystem residential installations as the determining factor for the ranking. Keep your eyes peeled for the June issue of CE Pro that will include a brand analysis of vendors used by the CE Pro 100. All entrants in the CE Pro 100 are eligible to attend the CE Summit as a hosted guest. It will be held this year in Atlanta from November 2-4, 2016. The CE Pro list is aggregated in several ways: ▷ A qualification form appeared in the February 2016 issue of CE Pro. ▷ An online form was posted on www.cepro.com for three months, inviting entries. The website will maintain a list of the 2015 CE Pro 100 for the next 12 months. ▷ A blast email was sent to the installing companies that subscribe to CE Pro. ▷ Special emails and phone calls were made to a handful of firms that appeared in previous CE Pro 100 listing. The list is ranked by the volume of billed, not booked, business from residential systems that incorporate at least three of the following subsystems: audio (sources, speakers, processors or multiroom components); HVAC control/energy management; lighting controls; security (alarms, integrated fire, access control or CCTV); structured wiring; telecommunications; video (sources, monitors, projectors, screens, multiroom components, gaming); whole-house automation; networking (routers, modems, WAPs, etc.); window covering controls; other (central vacuum, surge protection, irrigation control, satellite, spa controls, acoustical panels, seating, furniture, etc.). The data does include recurring revenue from multi-subsystem installations. As always there are several large companies that chose not to participate in this year’s listing. Many higher-end custom companies do not want to be compared with highvolume companies on any list. Is your company missing from the list? If so, email CE Pro at [email protected], or please email any other comments about the CE Pro 100. VOLUME EXPERTS BY REVENUE TOP SECURITY/STRUCTURED WIRING BASED INTEGRATORS (CUSTOM-ONLY REVENUES) 1.
