Assignment
As a part of our connection to the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, we will be creating exhibits to show
genocides of the past, so that those lives will not be forgotten. After the Holocaust occurred, people said
“never again” but Genocide keeps happening. Continuing to shine light on the problem is extremely
important in trying to prevent future occurrences. Working with your partner, you will create poster board
that will be displayed in our Classroom Tolerance Museum and in the commons during lunch.
Requirements for the poster:
1. First, create a title for your project. Place it at the top of the poster board, in large writing or font
(make it stand out!). Your title should draw attention to your project and should not just be the name
of the country you were assigned.
2. In the space below your title, define genocide (cite the source you used on the works cited page).
3. Neatly display the answers to the following questions with at least 1 corresponding photograph for
each category. You MUST use complete sentences and your answers need to be legible.
Category 1: Background Information
1.
2.
3.
4.
Where did this genocide occur- name the specific place and its relative location.
When did it occur? Has the genocide ended? If so, provide the date that it ended.
What were the underlying causes of the genocide?
Was there an event that “sparked” the killings? (like the President’s plane crash in Rwanda) If so, what
was it?
5. What were the two (or more) groups involved in the conflict? Describe each.
Include 2 Pictures: Include a map of your country and/or the area in which the genocide occurred or is currently
taking place. In addition, display an image of the different groups involved or a photograph of a major event.
Category 2: The Genocide
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Who was targeted? How? Why?
Who did the killing?
What methods were used?
How long did it last?
How many people were killed?
Include at least one picture that will help the reader/viewer better understand what was happening during
the genocide process. This could include major leaders during the time, those who were targets/ persecuted, etc.
Category 3: World Response
1. What was the response from the rest of the world to what was happening or did happen in your selected
country?
2. What did the press do in order to call attention to the problems in that country? What was the reaction of
the general public?
3. Were there any wars or did other countries try to step in to help? Is so, who? If not, why?
4. What were/are the lasting effects of the genocide? Some questions to consider are:
a. What was the country/region like directly after the genocide? What is the country/region like today?
b. Are there still tensions between the groups involved?
Include an image associated with relief efforts. This might include images of posters created to raise awareness
of the genocide.
Category 4: Genocide Prevention
1. Visit the website United to End Genocide: http://endgenocide.org/learn/preventing-future-genocides/. On
the page titled “Preventing Future Genocides,” the website lists three methods of preventing genocide.
2. In your own words, list and explain these methods of prevention. You may list these in bullet point format.
3. Next, tell how London High School can get involved in genocide/hate crime prevention.
- This might take the form of a personal or partner goal or pledge. If you choose to make a personal
goal/pledge, then both partners will need to have one.
Back of Poster:
On the back of your poster board, you are REQUIRED to have a works cited page (you will glue/tape it
there). Your page must be done correctly according to MLA Format. You must cite all sources you used
for your research, and you must have a minimum of 3 sources.
***NOTE: Plagiarism is defined as the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them
off as your own. You will need to use a significant amount of outside research and multiple sources in
order to complete this project. Therefore, failure to complete a Works Cited page will result in a zero on
the project.
Project and Presentation Guidelines
•
•
•
Before starting your project, it is a good idea to discuss with your partner what responsibilities
each person should take on and assign specific roles.
o BOTH PARTNERS MUST CONTRIBUTE TO A SIGNIFICANT PIECE OF THE
PROJECT IN ORDER TO EARN A GRADE.
You will fill out evaluations on your partner at the conclusion of the project. Therefore, it is
possible for to receive different scores. You will earn the score you receive depending on the
amount of work you put in to the overall project.
When presenting to the class, both partners are required to speak. You are allowed to use index
cards during your presentation if you wish. DO NOT simply read from your poster board when
you present but rather, have a good idea of what you’d like to talk about ahead of time and use an
index card to help you remember your main points.
Projects and presentations are due on ____________________________________________
Extra Credit Opportunity
Are you interested in making a larger impact that expands outside of our classroom while earning some
bonus points for your grade? If so, here is what you need to do:
• Volunteer for one or more shifts during 5th period (5a or 5b) to stand with
and explain our Classroom Tolerance Museum posters at lunch.
o You must buy and wear one of our specially designed t-shirts to
wear during your shift.
• Help collect donations and sell pre-orders for our tolerance project t-shirts
to staff and students. All profits will benefit the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum. This will help to spread the word about the dangers of
genocide, hate crimes, and bullying!
• Encourage students to wear their shirts to school on

day will help us to promote respect, kindness, acceptance, and compassion for all staff and
students at LHS by wearing our t-shirts and being united as one group with the same goal!
