Letter from WRC - President
LUNCHEON/MEETING - JANUARY 13, 2017
Dear WRC Members,
“BACK AT TIBURON GOLF CLUB.”
Happy New Year! And it will be an even happier new
year at noon on January 20th when we say “good riddance”
to Barack Obama and his administration, and welcome Donald J. Trump as he is sworn in as America’s 45th President!
In celebration, champagne corks will be popping all over the
country!
Now that Republicans control the US House, Senate and
the White House, and control the Florida House and Senate,
we must hold our leaders and representatives accountable.
No longer can we blame anyone but ourselves if nothing is
accomplished and the status quo remains in place for the
next 4 years. This is our chance to prove that Republican
principles and values are good for America and will
strengthen our foundations. If you have questions or concerns, contact your representatives. Remember: the squeaky
wheel gets the oil!
With every new year, there are changes and changes to
WRC are no exception. I’m sad to announce that in November, Michelle Morgenstern submitted her resignation as
WRC’s 1st VP. She will continue to manage the website for
us for which I’m eternally grateful!! However, I’m delighted
to announce that Mary Waller has stepped up and accepted
this position. In addition, Mary has agreed to chair the
Membership Committee to ensure that WRC continues to
grow and have an impact on Republican activities.
In addition to our regular monthly board meeting, the
WRC Board will meet this month for a “retreat.” We will
strategize and plan for the upcoming year so you will be inspired and motivated. We are going to establish several
more committees and events to get you—the heart of WRC—
more involved!
I want to thank all of you who have worked with me to
make WRC so successful. Without you, nothing would be
accomplished. However, there is more to be accomplished
so I’m challenging you to get involved. The 2018 Elections
are just around the corner so we need to start preparing now
if we want to keep the Governorship and win a second US
Senate seat!! We will be calling on you and your talents.
Together—ALL things are possible!

MARTIN
LUTHER
KING, JR.
PARADE AND CELEBRATION!
Naples, Florida
3. King received his doctorate in systematic
Theology.
4. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech was not his
first at the Lincoln Memorial. Six years before his iconic
oration at the March on Washington, King was among the civil
rights leaders who spoke in the shadow of the Great Emancipator during the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom on May 17,
1957. Before a crowd estimated at between 15,000 and
30,000, King delivered his first national address on the topic of
voting rights. His speech, in which he urged America to “give
us the ballot,” drew strong reviews and positioned him at the
forefront of the civil rights leadership.

Happy New Year! 2017 is filled with HOPE - don't you
agree? President-elect Trump has been busy assembling his
cabinet AND bringing JOBS back to America. He is working
hard for the American people already.
7. King’s last public speech foretold his death.
King had come to Memphis in April 1968 to support the strike
of the city’s black garbage workers, and in a speech on the
night before his assassination, he told an audience at Mason
Temple Church: “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life.
Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now
… I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you.
But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to
the Promised Land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried
about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen
the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
I hope you are well rested after the holidays because with the
new year comes important municipal elections. Many of these
elections are non-partisan. It is important to support the Republican candidates in those races especially the Republican

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
1. King’s birth name was Michael, not Martin.
The civil rights leader was born Michael King Jr. on January
15, 1929. In 1934, however, his father, a pastor at Atlanta’s
Ebenezer Baptist Church, traveled to Germany and became
inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther.
As a result, King Sr. changed his own name as well as that of
his 5-year-old son.

the organ at a Sunday service inside Ebenezer Baptist Church,
Marcus Wayne Chenault Jr. rose from the front pew, drew two
pistols and began to fire shots. One of the bullets struck and
killed King, who died steps from where her son had preached
nonviolence. The deranged gunman said that Christians were
his enemy and that although he had received divine instructions to kill King’s father, who was in the congregation, he
killed King’s mother instead because she was closer. The
shooting also left a church deacon dead.

have had his birthday observed as a national holiday.
INTERESTING THINGS YOU SHOULD
KNOW ABOUT INAUGURATION DAY
THE BIBLE:
Inauguration Day is the day that the Presidentelect becomes officially sworn in as the President of the United
States. This is often symbolized by the tradition of the President
taking his oath of office with his hand on a Bible. This tradition
was first begun by George Washington during his first inauguration. While some Presidents have opened the Bible to a random
page (like George Washington in 1789 and Abraham Lincoln in
1861), most others have opened the Bible to a specific page
because of a meaningful verse . Of course, there is always the
option to keep the Bible closed like Harry Truman did in 1945
and John F. Kennedy in 1961.
tution, it has become a tradition to have the Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court be the oath giver to the President on Inauguration Day. This, surprisingly, is one of the few traditions of inauguration day not begun by George Washington, who had
the Chancellor of New York Robert Livingston give him his oath
(Washington was sworn in at Federal Hall in New York). John
Adams, the second President of the United States, was the first
to have a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court swear him in.
Chief Justice John Marshall, having given the oath nine
times, holds the record for having given the most presidential
oaths on inauguration day. The only President to become an
oath giver himself was William H. Taft, who had become a
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after he had served as
President. The only woman to have ever sworn in a President
was U.S. District Judge Sarah T. Hughes, who swore
in Lyndon B. Johnson on board Air Force One.
TRAVELLING TOGETHER: In 1837, outgoing President Andrew Jackson and President-elect Martin Van Buren rode together to the Capitol on inauguration day in the same carriage.
Most of the following Presidents and President-elects have continued this tradition of traveling together to the ceremony.
SHORTEST INAUGURAL ADDRESS: George Washing- THE LAME DUCK AMENDMENT: Back in a time when news
ton gave the shortest inauguration address in history during his
second inauguration on March 4, 1793. Washington's second
inaugural address was only 135 words long! The second shortest inaugural address was given by Franklin D. Roosevelt at his
fourth inauguration and was only 558 words long.
INAUGURATION BLAMED FOR PRESIDENT’S
DEATH: Even though there was a snowstorm on William
Henry Harrison's inauguration day (March 4, 1841), Harrison
refused to move his ceremony indoors. Wanting to prove that
he was still a hardy general who could brave the elements, Harrison took the oath of office as well as delivered the longest
inaugural address in history (8,445 words, which took him
nearly two hours to read) outside. Harrison also wore no overcoat, scarf, or hat. Shortly after his inauguration, William Henry
Harrison came down with a cold, which quickly transformed into
pneumonia. On April 4, 1841, having only served 31 days in
office, President William Henry Harrison died. He was the first
President to die in office and still holds the record for serving
the shortest term.
FEW CONSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENTS : It is a bit surprising how little the Constitution prescribes for inauguration day. In
addition to the date and time, the Constitution only specifies the
exact wording of the oath taken by the President-elect before
he begins his duties. The oath states: "I do solemnly swear (or
affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the
United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." (Article
II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution)
SO HELP ME GOD: Although not officially part of the official
oath, George Washington is credited with adding the line "So
help me God" after he finished the oath during his first inauguration. Most Presidents have also uttered this phrase at the
end of their oaths. Theodore Roosevelt, however, decided to
end his oath with the phrase, "And thus I swear."
THE OATH GIVERS: Although it is not stipulated in the Consti-
was carried by messengers on horses, there needed to be a
great length of time between Election Day and Inauguration
Day so that all the votes could be tallied and reported. To allow
this time, inauguration day used to be March 4. By the early
twentieth century, this huge amount of time was no longer
needed. The inventions of the telegraph, the telephone, automobiles, and airplanes had greatly cut the reporting time
needed. Rather than make the lame-duck President wait for
four whole months to leave office, the date of inauguration day
was changed in 1933 to January 20 by the addition of the 20th
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Amendment also
specified that the exchange of power from the lame duck President to the new President would take place at noon. Franklin
D. Roosevelt was both the last President to be inaugurated on
March 4 1933 and the first President to be inaugurated on
January 20 1937.
AN EMBARRASING VICE PRESIDENT (WHO LATER BECAME PRESIDENT): In the Past, the vice president took his
oath of office in the Senate Chamber, but the ceremony now
occurs on the same platform as the President’s swearing-in
ceremony on the west front terrace of the Capitol. The vice
president takes his oath and gives a short speech, followed by
the President. This usually goes very smoothly — except in
1865. Vice President Andre Johnson hadn’t been feeling very
well for several weeks before Inauguration Day. To get him
through the important day, Johnson drank a few glasses of
whiskey. When he got up to the podium to take his oath, it was
obvious to everyone that he has drunk. His speech was incoherent and rambling and he didn’t step down from the podium
until someone finally pulled on his coattails. Interestingly, it was
Andrew Johnson who became President of the United States
after Lincoln’s assassination.

Trumpism explained
Wehrmacht in 1939. These are totally different exchange rates. If
you were to go back, for the last two weeks, and look at how many
stories there were about Mitt Romney, and say to yourself, do you
think Trump minded that the media was fascinated by whether or
not Mitt Romney would be Secretary of State? He bought two
weeks of non coverage because he gave them junk they could talk
about, and the media has to talk about something. The simpler and
more stupid it is, the easier it is for them to do it. He doesn't try to
give them lectures that are complicated, because they can't cover it.
He just releases a rabbit, often by tweet, and the media goes trotting after it happily.
I want to start by suggesting to you that you should think about November the 8th as a potential watershed. We don't know for sure
yet that it's watershed, but the odds are pretty high. It's a watershed in the choice of Trump, he's the only person ever, in American
history to win the Presidency without ever holding a public office, or
being a General in the military. No one else has ever done this. He
did it against 16 Republican candidates of whom at least seven or

you think about doing, maybe a 10 a.m. press thing. Having now
saturated all morning, you start thinking about, maybe a huge rally,
What does Trumpism mean? First thing it means is, get the best. I'm and then after the rally you'll do an hour with Sean Hannity. In the
hoping that the National Security Establishment will think about course of that one day, you get $30 million dollars worth of free
these principles. Trump is very prepared to find what's the best media. Your opponents are all holding fundraisers to raise money to
product, this is why he's raising Cain about the F-35, and Air Force buy TV ads. They are being drowned and don't even know it. The

political press reports you aren't raising enough money to be competitive.
You'll see him negotiate very toughly. He built really big things and
he built them so they're really pretty. Go look at Trump Tower. He's It got to a point that it verged on the absurd. How many of you saw

financier. He's a builder.
This was a very, very interesting, very important technological thing.
Think about this notion, that part of what Trumpism is about is applying Taleb's model of, intellectual yet idiot. A good case study is
Trump's skepticism about consultants. Jeb Bush raised $110 million
dollars, and had one delegate. Trump kept wondering why he was
paying these, intellectual yet idiots, to run his campaign. It never
occurred to Trump to hire people who were truly stupid to run a
campaign, so Trump ran his own campaign. People said, well he
doesn't know anything. This is the guy who, The Apprentice was the
number one TV show in the country, he'd been on the air 13 years,
but they thought he didn't know anything.
He went around the country, and he figured out, this is how you
appeal to people. Start with the idea that using common sense, if I
can get this through to the Pentagon, this will be one of the greatest
revolutions in military affairs you've ever seen. My argument with
all of you is, it's not about money. It's about thinking. Trumpism
also means they use modern technology. Trump has 25 million people on Twitter and Facebook. His great realization, which occurred
around October of 2015, you can actually reach all these people for
free. He decides on Tuesday, let's do a rally in Tampa. They email,
and Tweet, and Facebook, everybody in Florida that's in their list,
and says, hi, I'm going to be in Tampa on Friday at 5 o'clock, and
20,000 people show up.
The other candidates are all buying TV ads. He's showing up at a
mass rally, which is covered live on television. He then has 20,000
people with smartphones who take his picture. They all send it out
on Facebook and Instagram. If you figure 40 people per person, a
20,000 person rally, is an 800,000 person system, about twice the
size of MSNBC. For free. There's no exchange rate you can create
that makes sense. It's like trying to compare Polish cavalry and the
Callista and I were fascinated. We know Trump. We first talked
about his running for President with him in January of 2015. Now
here he is having won the Florida primary and he is taunting the
media. He's won Florida, and won by a big margin. He knows he's
going to be the nominee. He's trying to see how long can he draw
them out. He was also answering Romney's charge that he wasn't
really a business man, and he said, well I've got Trump Steaks, I've
got Trump Wine, I've got Trump Water, of course I'm a business
man. I've got Trump Magazine, plus I've got 15 golf courses, et cetera. He's also testing the new media. They can't leave him.
f you look at the rules of engagement, and this, and what we're allowed to think, and what we're allowed to say, and all this stuff, one
of the things the Trump Administration should try to do, and I'm
very encouraged that their Cabinet has no lawyers, except for the
Attorney General who kind of has to be a lawyer. It'll be interesting
to watch. You're going to have Cabinet meetings with people who
actually are practical, common sense, want to get something done,
and don't realize all the things they're not allowed to do. They're
also very sophisticated people, who hire really good lawyers. They
hire the kind of lawyers who'd figure out how to do it, not how to
not do it. It'll be interesting to see if they have the guts to take on
the entire legal framework that has risen with law-fare.
My final thoughts for you, one, new thinking is more important that more money.

On December 9, 2016 at Heritage Bay Golf & Country Club, Members of WRC celebrated a “Season of Joy & Giving”
with keynote speaker, former Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich. Here are some of the comments received:
“. . . Absolutely elegant and delightful holiday luncheon/meeting.”
“WOW—it was apparent that beauty and brains were behind the fabulous Holiday luncheon. What a spectacular job you all did! The decorations, gifts, vendors, speaker, food and spirit were perfect! Thank you all so much for your hard work and planning.”
“The committee did a really stunning job! You should be very, very proud!”
“I would like to congratulate you and your committee for a wonderful Christmas luncheon. Now, where do I begin … the venue-lovely, the
program-the Governor was genuine and informing, menu-delicious, the charity, a good choice. Sandra Rommel ushered in the season with
the Christmas Carols and patriotic songs. To have two members of the clergy give the Invocation and Benediction was fitting for the season. I applaud you for your effort to make this country great, again.”
Many thanks to The Holiday Luncheon Committee for making this event so successful!!!
