FUSION 2014-2015 pre-K Fusion is a comprehensive education program using movement, experiential learning, and art to teach STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), promote an understanding of scientific inquiry and integrate kinesthetic learning into early childhood education. Lessons provided by Colburn Museum staff. Funding generously provided by Buncombe County, Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative and the North Carolina General Assembly, Hedrick Industries, and Colburn Earth Science Museum Board of Directors Astronomy: “Blast Off” Take an interactive trip around space, act out a story of space travel, and make a constellation craft. Fresh Water: “Wonders of Water” Learn about liquid, solid, and gas forms of water as well as how gravity and density affect the movement of water. Build a waterfall, dance to a water song, and create watercolor art. Geology: “Rock Exploration” Identify different types of rocks, classify them according to characteristics, hear a story about rocks, paint your own pet rock. Oceanography: “Jellyfish” Explore salt water properties and learn about jellyfish—one of many amazing ocean creatures. Discover the role of jellyfish in the food chain and in the mixing of nutrients and carbon in the ocean. Make a jellyfish mobile. Photosynthesis: “Watermelon Seeds” How do plants make food from sunlight? Act it out to music by pretending to be a watermelon seed. Make a suncatcher craft. Insects: “Ant Colonies” Discover the amazing world underground in an ant colony. Learn about ants’ important role in the ecosystem and their amazing social structure. Make your own bigger-than-life ant. Dinosaurs: “Eat or be Eaten?” What kinds of dinosaurs roamed the earth? Learn about carnivores and herbivores and other characteristics of these iconic creatures. Dig for fossil bones and act out a dinosaur story to music. Volcanoes: “Hot Lava” Why do volcanoes erupt? How does that shape our earth? Hear a story about a volcano, dance along to a song about Mt.
