PENTACLE THEATRE
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
T
his show has a special place in my heart. I was fortunate to be
a member of the cast when Pentacle Theatre last performed
it in 2001. I had auditioned for the role of Belinda, and was
thrilled—and terrified!—to be cast as Brooke instead. Of all of my
theatrical experiences, both at Pentacle and elsewhere, this show is
the one that stands out as the one that was the most fun to be a part
of. Every single night was a joy to be onstage, and I am so privileged
to be able to direct it this time around.
Noises Off was created when playwright Michael Frayn watched a
Susan Schoaps
performance of his play, The Two of Us, from backstage. He said, “It
was funnier from behind than in front, and I thought that one day I must write a farce from
behind.” Since its premiere in 1982, it has become a staple in theaters around the world. Often
called the funniest play ever written, this show has it all. Doors, bags, boxes and sardines
clash with temperamental directors, actors and stage crew.
The challenges of this show are several. It is difficult to rehearse a show with eight doors
and two levels in a rehearsal space with one level and no doors. Act II is mostly pantomime,
which requires precise choreography of blocking and timing on the part of the actors. Each
of the three acts (which we are performing as two acts) has very similar, but not quite the
same, dialog. You can imagine the difficulty
in remembering which of three slightly difPentacle Theatre’s

Jeff Seeley
Kari Trickey
Frederick Fellowes/
Philip Brent
The Pentacle Theatre
experience started for
Jeff a mere 38 years
ago, when he stepped
onstage in his first Pentacle show, The Rivals. At Pentacle, Jeff has
also been a lighting designer, co-director
(Bedroom Farce) and director (Rumors).
Outside of Pentacle, Jeff has appeared in
productions of Les Liaisons Dangereuses,
Fortinbras, and Fuddy Meers at Albany
Civic Theater, and some very strange and
wild theater at Western Oregon State College, where he received his degree in Fine
Arts. Pentacle has and always will be Jeff ’s
theatrical home where, over the years, he
has appeared in 25 productions including Death of a Salesman, The Good Doctor,
Voice of the Prairie, God’s Country, Taming
of the Shrew, and The Three Sisters. Jeff was
last seen as Mr. Kraler in Pentacle Theatre’s
The Diary of Anne Frank. Born and raised
in Dallas, Oregon, Jeff is an avid fisherman,
who practices catch and release (“catch fish,
cook fish, release fish on plate”), lives in
Salem, and works for the Oregon Department of Justice. Jeff dedicates this show to
“the Abigail to my John Adams. Darla, in
this incarnation and the next and beyond,
I thank you for being my Dearest Friend.
Love. Meow.”
Dotty Otley/
Mrs. Clackett
This is Kari’s Pentacle
Theatre debut. She
appeared as Dr. Eve
in Sordid Lives and as
Penny Sycamore in You
Can’t Take it With You, both at Gallery
Theater in McMinnville. She was Honey
Raye in Christmas Belles at Mask & Mirror Community Theatre of Tigard and
Tualatin and Berte in Hedda Gabler at
Chehalem Players Repertory in Newberg.
She directed Octette Bridge Club for Gallery Theater’s Kaleidoscope reader’s theatre, and has assisted in stage crew and as
light board operator in other productions
at Gallery. Born in Oklahoma City and
raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Kari
lives in McMinnville and works in sales
and customer service for Gearbox Studios.
She raised dairy goats in Oklahoma before
moving to Oregon in 2005. She teaches
yoga, and has a passion for teaching yoga
to children.

PENTACLE THEATRE
PRESIDENT’S CORNER
I
am honored to be serving Pentacle Theatre as board president in 2017. I have been so fortunate to volunteer here for
almost 13 years. Pentacle has enriched my life in so many
ways during this time. Serving as this organization’s president
is a daunting position, but I know that I will be supported by a
fantastic board and our exceptional staff. I hope to continue the
hard work of our former board President, Nancy Moen.
In advance I want to acknowledge the people that have given
us so much!
Heather Dunkin Toller
1. Our patrons: Your passion for theater and your support for
this community inspires me daily. And to our new patrons, welcome! I hope you
enjoy our theater in the woods and see the magic often found here.
2. Our donors and sponsors: I am continually amazed by the outpouring of love from
our donors and sponsors. Your generosity continues to touch our hearts.
3. Our volunteers: You are the heartbeat of this organization. Without you Pentacle
Theatre simply wouldn’t exist. Thank you for all you do!
And many of you reading this fall into two or three of the above categories. Thank
you, thank you, thank you!
I have witnessed many transitions since I started volunteering here and 2017 promises
to bring an exciting season and some significant organizational changes. But together,
I know that we can all accomplish many great things for the theater in the year to come.

T
he first play ever commissioned by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival,
Emma’s Child is a beautiful drama about a woman’s attachment to the
child she had hoped to adopt. Jean and Henry Farrell, after years of unsuccessfully attempting to have a baby of their own, decide to adopt. Emma, the
birth mother, approves of the couple. Now a new waiting game begins: awaiting
the birth of their child.
Joe Silva is directing Pentacle Theatre’s production of Emma’s Child with the
help of assistant director Jennifer Gimzewski. The cast includes Ryan Clifford,
Michael Collins, Laura Davis, Holly Giesbrecht, Rebecca Herman, Ron Herman,
Fran Lattin, Hailey Nelson, Alycia Olivar, Toby Rhine, and Isabella Steele.
Emma’s Child opens on Friday, March 3, and plays through Saturday, March 25.
Tickets are available at the Pentacle Theatre ticket office located at 145 Liberty
St. NE in downtown Salem or online at pentacletheatre.org.
