Features ThisisawalkaroundtheshorelineofChichester'stidalharbour,finishinginChichesteritselftherearenohillsatall.Onacleardayyoucanenjoymarvellousviewsformiles–inlandto ChichesterCathedralandsouthacrosstheharbour.Birdwatchersshouldbringbinoculars.This walkhasaverydifferentfeeldependinguponthetides.Atlowtides,therearemudflatsand birds.Athightide,itslikewalkingaroundalake. ThelunchtimestopisthepopularoldvillageofBosham(pronounced'Bozzum'),whichappears deceptivelyclosequiteearlyon,exceptthatthereisalongdetouraroundthewatertogetto it. Intheafternoon,thewalkgoesviaFishbourne(thereisaRomanpalacenearby)and approachesChichesterCathedralthroughthelovelyBishop'sPalaceGardens.Thesuggested teaplaceisthecathedralcafe.Thenitsashortwalkthroughthepedestrianisedcentreofthe oldtown,pastpubsandcafestothestation. Walk Options History A2kmwalknorthalongtheroadoutofBoshamafterlunchwilltakeyoutoBoshamStation, whichisonthelinebackintoChichester,andthencetoLondon.Oryoucouldendthewalkin Fishbourne,visittheRomanPalacethere,haveacupofteaandtakeabusintoChichesterto seethecathedral. TheParishChurchofStMary,Chidham,whichdatesfromthetwelfthcentury,wasbuilton thesiteofawoodenSaxonchurch.TheSaxonfontoncehadalockedcover(obligatoryinthe thirteenthcentury),topreventwitchesfromstealingtheholywater.In1847,thevicar destroyedasixteenth-centurytombwithinthechurchbecausenodescendantwaswillingto payforitsrepair. BoshamistraditionallythesiteofavillabelongingtotheRomanEmperorVespasian,andwas animportantportinthemedievalperiod.HolyTrinityChurch,Bosham,istheoldestsiteof ChristianityinSussex.Accordingtotradition,KingCanute'sdaughterwasburiedinthechurch, whichalsoappearsintheBayeuxtapestry,whereKingHaroldisshownenteringBosham ChurchpriortosailingtoNormandyin1064.Therearecrossmarksontheinnerporchwhere crusaders,returningfromtheholyland,ritualisticallybluntedtheirswords.
