ThisisawalkaroundtheshorelineofChichester'stidalharbour,finishinginChichesteritselftherearenohillsatall.Onacleardayyoucanenjoymarvellousviewsformiles–inlandto
ChichesterCathedralandsouthacrosstheharbour.Birdwatchersshouldbringbinoculars.This
walkhasaverydifferentfeeldependinguponthetides.Atlowtides,therearemudflatsand
birds.Athightide,itslikewalkingaroundalake.
ThelunchtimestopisthepopularoldvillageofBosham(pronounced'Bozzum'),whichappears
deceptivelyclosequiteearlyon,exceptthatthereisalongdetouraroundthewatertogetto
it.
Intheafternoon,thewalkgoesviaFishbourne(thereisaRomanpalacenearby)and
approachesChichesterCathedralthroughthelovelyBishop'sPalaceGardens.Thesuggested
teaplaceisthecathedralcafe.Thenitsashortwalkthroughthepedestrianisedcentreofthe
oldtown,pastpubsandcafestothestation.

Options
History
A2kmwalknorthalongtheroadoutofBoshamafterlunchwilltakeyoutoBoshamStation,
whichisonthelinebackintoChichester,andthencetoLondon.Oryoucouldendthewalkin
Fishbourne,visittheRomanPalacethere,haveacupofteaandtakeabusintoChichesterto
seethecathedral.
TheParishChurchofStMary,Chidham,whichdatesfromthetwelfthcentury,wasbuilton
thesiteofawoodenSaxonchurch.TheSaxonfontoncehadalockedcover(obligatoryinthe
thirteenthcentury),topreventwitchesfromstealingtheholywater.In1847,thevicar
destroyedasixteenth-centurytombwithinthechurchbecausenodescendantwaswillingto
payforitsrepair.
BoshamistraditionallythesiteofavillabelongingtotheRomanEmperorVespasian,andwas
animportantportinthemedievalperiod.HolyTrinityChurch,Bosham,istheoldestsiteof
ChristianityinSussex.Accordingtotradition,KingCanute'sdaughterwasburiedinthechurch,
whichalsoappearsintheBayeuxtapestry,whereKingHaroldisshownenteringBosham
ChurchpriortosailingtoNormandyin1064.Therearecrossmarksontheinnerporchwhere
crusaders,returningfromtheholyland,ritualisticallybluntedtheirswords.
TheRomanPalaceinSalthillRoad,Fishbourne(tel01243785859)isthelargestRoman
buildingtohavebeenfoundinBritain–theremainsincludemosaicfloorsandunderfloor
heatingsystems.Insummeritisopendailytill5pm;inwinteronSundaysonlytill4pm;and
thereisacafeteria.Admission(2010)is£7.60.TherearebusesfromhereintoChichester.
ChichesterCathedral(tel01243782595),dedicatedin1108,containsmanyancientand
modernwonders:astained-glasswindowdesignedbyChagall;apaintingbyGraham
Sutherland;atombwiththeEarlofArundelhandinhandwithhiswife(thetombinspireda
poembyPhilipLarkin'Whatwillsurvivethemislove');ashrineofStRichard,Bishopof
Chichester;atwelfth-centurycarvingoftheraisingofLazarus;andaRomanmosaicfromthe
secondcentury(ChichesterwaspreviouslytheRomantownofNoviomagus).Thecathedral
hasfriendlyandwelcominghelpersandthereisnoentrancefee.Itisopendailyuntil7pmin
summer,till5pminwinter;evensongisat5.30pmMondaytoSaturday,3.30pmSunday.

In270metres,youcometoathree-armedpublicfootpathsignwhere[9]youturnleft,walkingalong
thenextsideofthefield,withahedgerowonyourright-handside,yourdirection80°initially.
After300metresgoingstraightalongthispathyoucometoatwo-armedpublicfootpathsignandina
further100metrestosomeplankstakingyouacrossasmallcreek,whichmakesitswayoutintothe
channelonyourright-handside.Onceovertheplanks,followthepathasitwendsthroughwoodland

andthenturnleftthroughawoodenfieldgategoinginitiallyalongtheright-handedgeofthefield,and
thenstraightacrossthefield.
In35metresthepathforksandyoutaketheleft-handforkcontinuingstraightaheadtowardsthe
farleft-handcornerandafour-armedmetalfootpathsign.Thentaketheleft-handpathgoing
throughawoodenkissinggate,andintothetreeswhichformatunnel,yourdirection355°initially.In
75metresaconcretebridgewithmetalrailingstakesyouoverasmallbrook.100metresfurtheron,
youcomeoutthroughanotherkissinggateontoamainroad.Crosstheroadcarefully.Onthefarside,
turnrightalongthepavement.
However,ifyouwanttodetourtovisittheRomanpalace,gostraightahead,followingthepublic
footpathsign,insteadofturningright.Thissoonbecomesatarmaccyclepath.In250metres,
ignoreastileonyourright-handsideandfollowthepathasitbendssharpleft.Inafurther250
metres,gothroughaswinggateonyourleftwithawoodenfieldgatetoitsleft-handside,and
followthetreelinepastthecafétothemuseumentrance.Afterwards,retraceyourstepstothe
mainroad.
53. In100metres,keeptothepavement.ItleadsintoafootpathtoFishbourneRoadEastthroughthe
tunnelundertheA27Chichesterbypass,nexttoacyclepath.Ontheothersideofthetunnel,
continuewalkingstraightaheaddownFishbourneRoadEast.

detail:500metresafterthetunnel,wheretheroadcurvesaroundtotherightcrosstherailwayline

bythesideofthewallandthenrightthroughthegateintothegardens.Ifthegardenshave
closedfortheday,retraceyourstepstotheroundaboutandturnrighttogettothecathedralalong
theroadside.
58. Oncethroughthegateintothegarden,walkstraightahead,yourdirection150°,alongthepathtaking
youthroughthegardens,withthecathedralawayonyourleft-handside.Keeptothepathaheadfor
150metres,asitcurvesaroundtotheleftbetweenlowhedgesandgothroughthedoorwayinthe
stonewallahead.Followthepatharoundtotheleftandthenin10metresfollowitaround
totheright.Inanother20metresthereisaviewoftheBishop'sPalacethroughthewrought-iron
gateonyourleftand20metresfurtheronyougoleftthroughthewoodengateintothegrounds
