Table wine? Well if you weren’t aware, in the U.S. a standard drink is any drink that contains approximately 14 grams of pure alcohol (0.6 ounces or 1.2 tablespoons). Take a look below to appreciate the different standard drink equivalents and to increase your alcohol education. 12 ounce beer or cooler ~5% alcohol 8.5 ounces of malt liquor ~7% alcohol 5 ounces of table wine ~12% alcohol 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits or “hard liquor” ~40% alcohol Many people aren’t sure as to what counts as a standard drink; therefore, they do not realize how many standard drinks are in the containers in which the drinks are sold. Examples include: Beer 12 oz. =1 drink 16 oz. = 1.3 drinks 22 oz. = 2 drinks 40 oz. =3.3 drinks Malt liquor 12 oz. =1.5 drinks 16 oz. =2 drinks 22 oz. =2.5 drinks 40 oz. = 4.5 drinks Table wine A standard 750-mL (25-oz.) bottle= 5 drinks 80-proof spirits or “hard liquor” A mixed drink= 1 or more A fifth (25 oz.)= 17 drinks A pint (16 oz.) = 11 drinks 1.75 L (59 oz.)= 39 drink For Your Information… The black line shows 12 oz. of beer (one standard drink) in a 16 oz. “keg cup”. 3 full keg cups = ~4 standard drinks 6 full keg cups = ~8 standard drinks 9 full keg cups= ~12 standard drinks Keg cup filled with wine= ~4 standard drinks Keg cup filled with one mixed drink can be 1 or 2 standard drinks depending on the number of shots added.
