Division of Humanities Tentative Course Syllabus Course Code: Course Title: Course Offered in: Course Instructor: HUMA2420 Late Imperial China Summer 2016 Chunyuan LI ([email protected]) Course Description: This course surveys Chinese history from the disintegration of the Tang empire at the turn of the tenth century to the eve of the Opium War. It will introduce students to significant political, economic, social and cultural development in China, and the changing patterns of contact between China and the outside world during that period. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): Course ILOs 1 Students who complete this course will obtain a basic understanding of the whole arc of Chinese history from the collapse of the Tang to the 1840s. 2 Students will develop a sense of the continuities and discontinuities of the history of late imperial China. 3 Students will obtain some insights on some important events and persons in Chinese history through selected readings and group discussions. 4 Students will develop skills of writing and oral communication through group discussions and presentations.
