Editing EndNote styles - UOW Library Catalogue

Editing ENDNOTE Styles
Editing an EndNote Style
Change how references appear in your document by editing an EndNote style, or selecting a new style.
Any style changes need to be done through Endnote. The EndNote style affects all references in a
document. It is recommended you work from an example/s of how you want the references to look.
The style templates control how the reference will be displayed in the document. The fields of the
template are filled with the information entered into the references of the EndNote Library.
Output style bibliography template
The style of the reference in
the bibliography will match
the style in the template.
Document
In this example the Journal is
underlined in the template
and is therefore underlined in
the document
You can edit:
• Formatting: e.g. bold, italic, underlined, etc.
• Citation sections: which fields appear for each reference type and how they relate to each other
• Punctuation: e.g. brackets, commas, colons etc.

2. From the Edit menu, select Output Styles > Edit Author-Date (name of style)

What do the EndNote formatting characters do?
EndNote formatting characters help to EndNote to control the format and punctuation of a citation.
The name, purpose and creation of the characters are explained on Table 1. The example below
uses all the common formatting characters. The use of Forced Separation bars and Link Adjacent
Text diamonds are most important as these will remove a space and any linked punctuation/words
from a citation when there is no information entered in the EndNote reference.
