Smelting
By Hannah Peasley
For this edition I interviewed Gig
Lymburner, a local smelting fisherman,
about smelting on the Bagaduce River. He
has been smelting for about 67 years. Gig
first started smelting when he was 12-yearsold. He started when he was given a smelt
tent from Charlie Staples. Who taught Gig
to smelt? It was Moyle Gray. Gig says he
enjoys smelting because he enjoys fishing
and it is lots of fun. Gig thought that the
largest amount of smelts he every caught
was about 400 smelts.
If you are wondering how smelting is
done. First you need a smelt tent, a chair

Ikidarod
By Nicole Devine
Fun! Fun! Fun! The Ikidarod is really
fun. On Wednesday Feb. 2, 2011 we had the
Ikidarod at Brooksville Elementary School.
Seventh and eighth graders helped Mrs.
Lepper organize the Ikidarod. I think the
Ikidarod started because the kids loved
studying the Iditarod so much with Mrs.
Lepper.
At the beginning of the day students are
assigned to their groups. Then these groups
each build a sled out of cardboard, plastic

Snow Sculpture

Maeve and I made
a snow sculpture. We
found a part of a
snowman and used it
as a body for him. We
also found long
skinny pieces of used
cardboard and used it
for hair and
sunglasses (we really
did!). The nose was a
small snowball. We didn’t get to put arms
on him. We ran out of time. We made our
snowman at recess. It was really COLD!!!
Deus (that’s the name we picked for him)
can be found on the BES playground by a
small playhouse. ! ! !
Ice Skating
By Jordan Gray
Retrieved from: www.google.com/images
Ice-skating is really fun. I like to use hockey
skates but other people prefer figure skates.
There are lots of ways to ice skate. You can do it
for fun or you can skate in a competition or
play a competitive sport. For competition you
can pair skate or you can do Ice Dancing.

and a roll of duck tape, along with other
supplies you would need to survive in the
outdoors. When they are done creating
their sled. Each team starts to figure out
who is going to ride in the sled (the
musher) and who the dogs are going to be.
Then the race starts. On the younger
kids playground checkpoints have been set
up like in the real Iditarod. Such as Nikolai,
Rhon, Finger Lake, Safety, White Mountain,
and Nome. Nome is the finish line. The
checkpoints have people standing at them.
They ask each team questions. These
questions each team looked up on the
computer after they had finished their sled.
If a team did not get the right answer to the
question they got a penalty of one minute.
The teams did not all start at the same time.
They go group by group. When all the
teams finish everyone got hot chocolate.
This year after the race in the afternoon we
all went sliding at Mr. Blodgett’s hill.
Thanks for reading!

Pair skating
Pair skating uses figure skates. A male
and a female skater skate together. They
perform spins and jumps together as they
are side by side. Lots of times the man will
throw the woman in the air and she will do
a stunt and land back on her skates. Pair
skating is often a competition but some
people like to do it to have a fun time.
Ice Dancing
You use figure skates in this sport, too.
All ice dancing really is ballroom dancing
on ice. You can do the tango, waltzes,
foxtrots and lots of other dances. Ice
dancing is done with two people dancing
together. And that is some different ways to
ice skate. "
Playing Outside
By Lucena Day
Outside at recess Jack, Jon, Cole, Lars,
and I play Mariobros. Mariobros is a game
where people try to get rid of Bowser and
Bowser’s dad. Bowser is a monster, which
tries to capture Princess Baby Peach and
Baby Mario.
Jack was Baby Mario. I was Princess
Baby Peach. Jon was
Mario. Cole was Baby
Lougi. Lars was Fire
Yoshi. Ashley also
played too. She was
Peach, who is Baby
Peach’s mom.
When you play Mariobros you run
around a lot. Princess Baby Peach and Baby
Mario went to Bowser’s castle. Bowser tried
to capture them but he couldn’t because
Mario saved Princess Baby Peach and Baby
Mario. We all ran and ran until recess was
over. Our faces were red and we were
sweating. Then the bell rang, game over
until next recess. "
Snow Boarding
By Nicole Devine
Snow boarding in Maine is real fun. Do
you know how to snowboard? Have you
seen someone snowboarding and you don’t
know how too. Well read this and you’ll
know.
Well first of all you will need snow
pants, mittens, hats, and boots. You will
need a board. You can find a board online
at DicksSportingGoods.com. You can
choose a lot of different boards. Snow
boarding is not just for boys. It is good for
girls too. You can go to the golf course in
Blue Hill and snowboard. There are also a
few places in Bangor you can go to too. "
Remember
“Brrrrrrr!”
It’s cold outside!
Remember to bring your
pets inside during this
frigid season!

and about 5-6 lines. These lines dangle
down through a hole in the floor of the tent
where the ice has been cut out. Yes, the tent
is on the frozen Bagaduce River. What you
use for bait is clamworms, sand worms or
night crawlers. You sit in the chair and
wiggle the baited lines up and down in the
water. When the smelts bite you pull up the
lines and put the smelts in a bucket.
Gig told me some people used to make
forts out of brush and use that for a smelt
tent. Years ago people went smelting as a
job. Most of these people, shipped their
smelts to Boston in special tanks for others
to eat and enjoy. Local people cook smelts
by rolling them in a mixture of flour, salt,
and pepper and then fry them in oil. Wow!
That makes me want to go to the Bagaduce
River and try my luck on the ice.

Book Review

Spoiler Alert: this article may contain some
information that may reveal what you are
about to read.
Reading is a wonderful thing to do
during this festive season, sit down by your
fire with your cat and a cup of cocoa. Go to
your local library to get started.
The first of this week’s books is Down
the Rabbit Hole by Peter Abrahams. The
novel is an in depth mystery about a girl
named Ingrid, great actress and soccer star,

Pee Wees
By Lars Hooper
Brooksville Pee Wees have never
lost a game. Our coach is Cory
Limeburner. In practice he has us run
around the gym two times. We wear
uniforms that are red on the outside and
white on the inside. For home games we
wear the white side. Away games we
wear the red side.
We have played four games so
far and won all of them. There are
kids from Penobscot and Brooksville
on our team. When I am in a game I
get really serious when the other
team has higher points. We count the
points but we are not supposed too. I
really like playing basketball with
my friends.
who gets entwined in a mystery, that
results in a death, but that is just the start of
this complicated story.
Our next book is The Last Treasure by
Janet S. Anderson. This novel is about a boy
named Ellsworth who lives with his dad.
The last time he saw his family was when
he was little before his mom died. Now he
is going to live with his family that he
doesn’t know. As this novel turns into a
mystery Ellsworth teams up with his cousin
Jess to find treasure.
Another book that we recommend is
Rules by Cynthia Lord. This book is a fiction
Newberry Honor book, about a girl named
Catherine who’s brother David is autistic.
David is a 12-year-old boy who just wants a
normal life. It seems like everything
revolves around his disability, but when
new kids move in next-door Catherine
realizes she doesn’t even know what
normal is.
Our last but not least book is Scat by
Carl Hiaasen. Reclaimed for his other
books, Hoot and Flush. Hiaasen yet again
brings the environment to a funny and yet
serious realism into another novel. This
book will leave you on the edge of your
seat and laughing out loud as it brings
characters to life like Nick, Marta, Smoke,
and Bunny Starch. #
