PARENTAL GUIDANCE
Overprotective Parents
Opel Singh, Montessori
Anand Nagar
Is my child safe?
One mother will not send her eight-year
old son on the school bus because she
has heard that the bus drivers drive rashly.
Another does not allow her twelve-year
old daughter to sleep over at her friends’
houses because she feels that she is not
sure if other parents will provide adequate
supervision. Some mothers say they get
the jitters every time their children climb
onto the jungle gym in the park because
they are convinced their children will fall
and hurt themselves.
When a child is born, it seems so fragile,
feeble and tiny that it is only natural for
parents to feel fiercely protective. Parents
feel responsible for these tiny creatures
that they have brought into the ‘big, bad
world’ and intend to be their guardian
angels for the rest of their lives. Parents
want to shield their children from all
conceivable harm, but for how long and
to what extent? Parents need to remember
that children do grow up. They cannot
expect their children to hold ‘mummy or
daddy’s’ hand forever as they make their
way through life. Children do not tiptoe
through life, they romp, they run, they
jump, and they explore. Parents should
accept that scratches, cuts, bruises, and
broken limbs are all a part of childhood.
Parents who constantly run interference
between their children and the real world
are actually doing more harm than good.
Inappropriate fears
This does not mean that children are the
best judges of the risk involved in any
activity or that parents should not be
cautious. But how does a parent know if
he or she is being unnecessarily fearful
for his or her child’s safety? Parents who
view every physical activity as being
potentially dangerous; those who only feel
reassured when their children are under
their watchful eyes; those who are more
anxious than their children that something
will go wrong; those who hover over their
children constantly giving instructions;
those who rule out all activities that have
an even remote possibility of resulting in
an accident; those who feel that their
children cannot cross a road without being
run over or go out alone without being
abducted are parents who could be said
to have inappropriate fears.
Downsides of being Overly Protective
Parent’s fears for their children’s safety,
if extreme, can have an adverse effect on
their children’s confidence and selfesteem. By molly-coddling a child, a

We all are aware that our school bulletin,
the CMS Bulletin is published every month.
It is true that everyone reads it but very few
know it uses.
The most important use of it is that it
enlivens our school values. It also makes the
children realize that they are a united body.
It teaches them to be proud of the school to
which they belong and tells them to uphold
the ideals to which the school stands.
The school bulletin also encourages the
students to practice writing. It provides
opportunities to budding authors when they
see their articles in print. Thus the school
bulletin can be used in many ways.

I have a frock. It is very, very pretty. It is
made of fine silk. It is pink in colour with

matching socks and shoes to go with it. I
wear pink ribbons with it. Everyone says
it is a very pretty dress.

My favourite dress
On, I wish I could remain a child.

There would be nobody to put restrictions

parent is only making the child more
dependent and inhibiting her attempts to
learn to do things by herself.
Overprotective parents unintentionally
send out a message to their children that
they are incapable of handling things by
themselves. In addition, the parents’ fears
transmit themselves to the children who,
in turn, begin to perceive dangers lurking
in every new activity and experience. It
has been observed that children have
fewer falls, tumbles and injuries when left
to play by themselves than with parents
constantly cautioning them, and ready to
leap forward at the slightest sign of
danger. Parents who fear that an activity
may be risky should warn their children
beforehand rather than while they are
engaged in the activity. Else, the warnings
merely serve to transmit the fear to the
children and distract them, leading to a
greater probability of an accident.
When a child does something on her own
for the first time, it is a great
accomplishment, even if it is something
as insignificant as learning to ride a
bicycle. Parents who wrap their children
in cotton wool, in a manner of speaking,
are denying their children this pleasure.
Raju was not a happy child. He
was generally sad because he did not
have any friend. He joined the school
at the age of eight from Class II. When
he started going to school, he was very
happy because he made many friends.
After that, he became very naughty and
did not listen to his parents. One day,
his parents told him that if you will not
listen to us you will be in great
difficulty but even then, he did not
listen to his parents. Then one day, his
teacher scolded him because he had
got very low marks in his subjects. At
that time, he felt very ashamed. After

On Tuesday morning, Ma’am entered the
class and told us that we will play a few
games in maths. She gave us a number

colours. We played the game with our

by forward and backward counting. We
also did many sums of number system
with the help of number cards. This was
a nice experience to learn maths with

some days, he again started doing
mischievous things. Then one day, his
friends said to him that if you will not
get good marks in every subject, then
we will not talk to you and we will also
not play with you. After saying this, they
went away. Then he thought what his
parents had told him and from that day
onwards, he started listening to his
parents and also started studying. Thus
he became a good boy and was very
happy.

Autobiography of a torn shoe
All love the new and hate the old.
Something like this has happened with me.
I was brand new, a couple of years back.
My master, an engineering student, loved
me beyond measure. He had several shoes
but he preferred to wear me everyday.
He brushed me with good quality polish
before going to college. When he returned
from his college he brushed me again and
kept me in his almirah. I was quite content
with my lot. I was proud of my shape. I
was made up of good quality expensive
leather.
But fortune, they say, is fickle. Bad
days were in store in for me. My master
completed his engineering. He got a decent
job and a fat salary. He had several decent
offers of marriage. He was married to the
only daughter of a millionaire. As a part
of his dowry, he got decent shoes.
Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.
He then preferred to wear those new
ones and started neglecting me. I was
thrown in the dusty corner of the house,
on bare ground and later in their dark,
dusty store room. Now rats began to cut
me. Neither my ungrateful master nor her
bride came to my rescue. I was allowed
to rot. I was at last given to a beggar. My
fate was worse than before. After few
months I was thrown by the beggar in a
garden. I am now soiled all over with dirt.
Now I have changed beyond
recognition. I’m now torn at several
places. I often muse on my past. Verily
our saddest days are those which remind
us of our happy past. What cannot be
cured must be endured. Every moment, I
am waiting for my end. Ingratitude, thy
name is man!

A day without
electricity
Electricity a
boon or a bane, I
found out the day
there was no
electricity. The modern day
gadgets, like the washing
machine, computer, dishwasher etc have
simplified our lives. But without electricity,
they are useless.
One morning I woke up all sweaty, there
was no electricity, hence the AC was off.
Mom was angry and helpless, as she had to
to perform household chores. As I could not
play on the computer, I went out to the park
in our colony. I made new friends. I had a
great time playing cricket and football with
them.
When I came home, mom was happy to
hear that I was hungry. Dad had more time
to spend with us, as he could neither watch
television nor work on the computer. There
was no television for mom, hence we all sat
on the dining table and had dinner. After
dinner, we exchanged jokes and had fun
playing Antakshari. To cut a long story short,
without electricity, we had more time for each
other and it was a great time.
This is not to say that electricity is a
curse. But, it should be used wisely. Too
much of a good thing is bad, but use the
time saved with your family and friends. How
I wish there was no electricity at least once a
week!!

When the electricity
went off!
I shudder to think
of that dark night,
when the lights
went off. We were
in a village 10 kms from
Lucknow and our school picnic party was at
its peak. It was a nightmare of fear and terror!
We were fifteen of us —all class V
students. The picnic was over and all of us
were dead tired. The place was near the
Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary. As we were
returning back in the bus, suddenly it
stopped. All of us got down and sat in a
small tea-stall nearby. The driver was trying
to repair it. All of a sudden, the lights went
out. We felt afraid and some of us even
started crying. How we wished to get back
home! As I moved, I fell over something. It
moved and scared me. I screamed. Oh; it
was a cat! The street dogs started barking.

We clung close to each other. Siddhant
started telling a ghost story which his mother
had told him. Although it chilled our spines,
we couldn’t stop listening to it.
I was constantly praying and
remembered all the naughty things I had
done at home. I promised to myself to be
good and respectful to my elders and never
bully the youngsters. Then suddenly it
seemed as if God said, ‘Let there be light’
and the lights were on. I wondered how
people could live without electricity! We are
so used to lights-bulbs and fans, that life
without these sounds horrible. I thank God
for creating geniuses like Edison who have
made our lives so comfortable by giving us
inventions like the electric bulb etc. As I was
lost in these thoughts, the bus horn blew
and soon we were back.

My visit to a doctor
One of the greatest fears
of a child is his visit to a doctor.
Whenever a child does
something wrong, his elders
tell him that they will take him
to a doctor. This way the child
gets scared and stops doing
mischief.
I was also scared of the doctor.
Whenever I got hurt I avoided going to a
doctor. I somehow managed to keep the
doctor away from me. There is a hospital in
front of my house. Whenever I saw people
going to the hospital, I thought that they
must be very brave. Whenever I heard
people screaming in the hospital, I got
scared and the fear of the hospital and doctor
increased in my mind.
One day, it was raining heavily and
there was water all over the road. I was
returning from my school and my friend was
also with me. We were playing with water.
Suddenly my friend threw water on me and
ran away. I ran after her and fell on the road.
I could not see the stone which was in the
water. My leg got hurt and it started bleeding.
I started crying because my leg was paining.
I called my friend but she could not hear.
I shouted aloud so that she could hear.
Fortunately, she heard me and came to my
help. She took me to my house.
When I reached home, my mother was
shocked to see my wound. She said that we
should hurry to the hospital. When I heard
that I had to go to a doctor I got scared. I
told my mother that I was alright and my leg
was not paining anymore. My mother
understood that I was afraid and she told
me that I needed first aid soon. She took me

to the nearest hospital. The doctor came and
examined my wound and said that I needed
an injection and after that I would be fine. I
started crying at the name of the injection.
The doctor told me that I would not feel the
pain. As the injection was coming near me I
closed my eyes and started screaming
loudly. While I was shouting the doctor told
me that the process was over.
I was very happy when the doctor said
these words. The doctor told me that I was
the patient with the loudest voice. She gave
me a chocolate and told me that I should
walk carefully on the road and should not
be afraid of the hospital. I was very happy
because now I was not afraid of the hospital.

A day without electricity
These days
electricity is a
necessity. Big
factories, railway
services, banks,
offices, all depend
on electricity. At
home the refrigerator, fans,
lights, television, mixer grinders,
all these are electrical appliances. Every work
of ours is so much dependent on electricity,
that we cannot think of even a minute without
it. But I spent a whole day without electricity.
It was a hot summer day and I was
watching a programme on spirits and ghosts
on my favorite television channel, Discovery.
My mother told me not to watch such
programmes but she got busy with her
cooking as that day, she had invited my aunt
for dinner. I did not listen and continued
watching as I was finding it very interesting.
At that time, suddenly, the electricity went
off. I felt disappointed. We all started feeling
hot and mother was facing problems in
kitchen as she could not use the mixer.
Soon evening arrived and it became
dark. We all were feeling quite bored as we
could not play video games. I was sitting in
my room sweating and thinking about the
programme I was watching in the morning.
Suddenly I saw a scary figure coming close
to me. I started feeling frightened and it said,
‘Booh!’ I got as frightened as a mouse and
as I called my mother, it started laughing; it
was my sister. My mother came and scolded
her for this.
Soon my aunt also came, it was too hot
and all of us were sweating. We had candlelight dinner which everybody enjoyed
except my mother as it was most difficult for
her to cook and serve. Aunt went away. The

lights did not come and we tried to sleep but
mosquitoes were not letting us to. So we

In the morning, when I woke up, I saw
electricity was there. I felt very happy but
then I understood the importance of
electricity and now I always try to save it.

A day without electricity
If I were called upon to
name a single invention of
science and technology that
has benefited mankind the
most, I would name electricity.
It is a fact of life that we
cannot have our way all the
time. There comes a time when we just sit
helplessly. I vividly remember that heavy
downpour the other day.
The entire family had gathered in the
portico enjoying the heavy rain which, along
with the cool breeze, brought the temperature
down and helped our spirits soar higher and
higher. Grandma very happily agreed to make
‘pakodas’ for us. Everybody seemed to be
very happy talking aimlessly. But this was
to be a very short phase as the electricity
department mercilessly switched off the
power supply. Darkness all around brought
an abrupt end to our happiness. Candles
and torch lights were switched on to provide
some comfort. But candles and torch lights
cannot switch on the television set. The
‘pakodas’ did not taste good any more.
Incomplete home work would mean trouble
with the class teacher. The makeshift dinner
did not taste good either.
Since that fateful day I have stopped
liking rains. I do not sing the rhyme “Rain,
Rain come again” any more. I do hope I have
your sympathies.

A day without electricity
It was a hot summer day and we had
just returned from my friend’s house. When
we came back, we saw that there was no
electricity and everybody in the locality was
standing outside and discussing about the
situation, which had worsened because the
transformer had burnt down.
It was very hot and humid because not
a whiff of air was blowing. Everybody was
sweating profusely. As my mother served
the food, everybody started eating. As we
put the first morsel inside our mouth
everybody started complaining because by
mistake my mother had put sugar instead of
salt in the vegetable.
After dinner we tried to sleep. But it
was very hot. Then we decided to carry our
bedding on the roof braving the attack of
mosquitoes.
It was a bit pleasant there and we all
dozed off. Suddenly, I woke up and heard a
noise coming from down stairs. I woke up
my family members thinking that a thief had
taken advantage of the darkness. We all
rushed down and saw a shadow moving.
Together we pounced on the shadow and
started hitting it, the shadow started yelling.
Suddenly, the lights came and we saw
that the thief was none other than my brother
who had come down to drink water. The
coming of electricity saved him just in time.
This is how an eventful day passed by.

Nutritional and Food standards to be upgraded in CMS canteens
Dear Parents
The world over it is being realized that children’s greatest asset is their health. Europe and USA have already
introduced foods which are health building for their children at the school level. The banning of carbonated beverages
has been the first step.
Re-designing the entire meal pattern served at the canteen CMS is contemplating to introduce healthy
food items in its canteens and ban those ingredients that are harmful to children.
Dr. Amitabh Pandit ND(ln), DY, BCAMP (USA) is bringing in his specialization in Orthomolecular science,
Micronutrients and Nutritional Medicine to be used in improving students' performance in sports and study and
enhance their immunity levels.
The special nutritional food patterns are designed by Dr. Amitabh Pandit. These patterns are to be introduced in
CMS to set up WORLD CLASS FOOD STANDARDS FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES.
With rapid changes in science taking place and new research showing how food chemistry alters and affects the
bio-chemistry in the human body, the impact of the change in canteen food would be far reaching.
Each meal, snack taken at the canteen would provide the child nutrition for activity, ability and good
health.
Food is no more a substance to fill the stomach sack - but is a life and energy giving substance
miraculous in nature.
Everything that is put in the stomach has an impact on the child.
CMS has decided to initiate and pioneer steps to make its students radically aware and attuned to their
health status. It has decided to revamp its entire food menu being served at the canteens.
Dr. Amitabh Pandit has researched each and every food to be served at the canteen. His focus is to ensure that the
cutting edge - updated science in Food Combination reaches the student level. It will incorporate in their life style
the newer ways of eating foods that are excellent in taste, texture and flavor. These food combinations
supply the child's body every micro nutrient required to build his blood, bone and muscles.
Attention has been paid specially to strengthen the nervous system to ensure coordination ability, agility, effectiveness
of brains and enhance mental capability.
The student’s life is built on his performance in academics - this is vital and is recognized by the parents as
well. All foods being devoid of chemicals and synthetic ingredients help to release the burden on the immunity of
the child. The increase in immunity would allow the child to achieve his academic goals. The beverages,
drinks and foods being combined and introduced at the school would have an impact on the student’s temperament
behavior, spirit and moods,
Natural ingredients and foods would be supplying amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, simple and
complex sugars. These potent mixes would help to reduce ailments like acidity, gastric discomfort, burning
sensation, frequent colds and viral infection. It would further tune up and fill in the child’s nutritive reserves making
him/her stronger, resistant to disease and raise the child’s energy levels in all activities and spheres of life.
Food items generally served in school canteens
1. Patties
2. Vegetable Burger
3. Samosas
4. Bread Pakoras
5. Chola Bhatura
6. Chowmein
7. Fried Rice
8. Toffees
9. Cakes
ALONG WITH T OMATO SAUCE, CHILLY SAUCE AND CHUTNEY
Beverages:
1. Cold Drinks.
Your attention is drawn to the making of canteen foods
and the ingredients that go into making each one of
them:
White Flour (Maida)
Patties, Burgers, Samosas, Bread, Bhatura, Noodles,
Cakes.
MAIDA is a devitalized, denatured form of whole-wheat
flour. It has been depleted of the wholesomeness as
present in its natural form. The B complex, Vit. E is
missing from maida along with all the trace elements
essential for the body. Maida has the effect of clogging
of intestines, producing lethargy and dullness,
increasing constipation and henceforth fattening.
Fried Foods:
Samosas, Pakoras, Bhatura, Rice, Chowmein
This process uses a vegetable oil and all items are deep
fried. Frying the foods breaks the globules of fats and these
penetrate into the flour getting mixed with it. This fat when
absorbed by the flour makes the digestion of the food
extremely taxing and utilizes bodily energy. The digestion
of these foods causes - Acidity, Gastric Reflux, Burning
Sensation, Change of temperament of the person - irritable,
lazy, moody, etc.
White Sugar:
Toffees and cakes: An isolated chemical compound
depleting and robbing the body of calcium, making the teeth
and bones weaker. It leaches Vit. B effecting the nervous
system, lowering the immunity levels.
Patties: The shelf life tends to putrefy the stuffing.
Veqetable burqer, Samosas, Bread Pakoras, Bhatura:
These contain only Saturated Oil, Maida and Potato.
Toffees and Cakes: Wow! What delicious sweets for the
eyes and the tongue. Further down the tongue it is nothing
else but sugar and white flour.
Nutritional Foods to be introduced at CMS canteens
Food Items:
1. Matara Chat
2. Juicy Corn
3. Steamed Mung sprout chat
4. Mix vegetable rolls (Roti Parantha)
5. Seasonal Fruits
To be served with lemon juice and chat masala.
Beverages:
1. Fresh Juice of Fruits
2. Fresh Juice of Vegetables
3. Tender Coconut Water
The foods suggested are only steamed with the
additives of lime juice and chat masala for the palette
to relish.
The main ingredients are matar, corn and mung
sprouts. These are health giving foods containing
ample protein to give the growing body essential
nutrients for growth and repair of the worn out
tissues. They help in building new tissues.
There are complex carbohydrates for maintaining a
steady flow of FUEL FOR THE MUSCLES - to give
energy in a balanced way throughout the working
day.
The foods are made without hydrogenated vegetable oil,
thus light on the stomach and digestion. The vegetable
content of the foods is much higher.
The roti can be buttered for more taste. The flour being
used is whole wheat and does not require fermentation
unlike bhatura or patties.
The fruit salad/seasonal fruit counter provides an excellent
source of natural sugars with ease of assimilation. It totally
eliminates the need for chemical sweets. The juicy fruits
are life giving with their profuse vitamin and mineral
content. They are a BONUS TO HEALTH.
They provide unimaginable surge of energy to the
child during his play and study hours.
The fresh juices of vegetables or fruits are like an infusion
of energy and power into the blood stream of the child!
Tender coconut water revitalizes the blood cells and boosts
the skin, hair and eyes. It is a comprehensive vitaminizer.
The above foods are totally devoid of any kind of
color, preservatives - bottled or canned, synthetic
taste enhancers, sweeteners and additives. All the foods
are Natural in taste, Natural in Color and Natural in
sweetness. The goal of the menu provided is to
rebuild, regenerate and rejuvenate the child’s body
and mind.
"To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art."
Think
before you eat!
1. What nutrition is being provided to the growing
body of the child?
2. What vitamins and minerals are these foods
giving the children?
3. Are they health packed foods?
4. Are these cold drinks building, reparing or
maintaining the body of the child?
5. Is any one of these foods giving even an iota of
nutrients to your child?
