Liturgy Notes
THANK YOU
Thank you to all who did so much to make our Christmas celebrations so prayerful, spiritually uplifting, and
joyful. We appreciate the leadership of our musicians in helping us to raise our voices in praise and worship
of the Word made flesh: the contemporary ensemble, the choir, cantors and the instrumentalists. We are
grateful to our ushers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers and sacristans, who
minister so well together to make liturgy every weekend an opportunity to encounter our Lord in Word and
Sacrament. Finally, thanks to our Martha’s Guild who take such care in providing an environment that
invites us to raise our hearts and voices in prayer as we celebrate the sacred mysteries of our salvation
throughout the year. We offer each and every one of you our gratitude for your generosity of service to all of
us who worship at St. Joseph and St. Rose Churches.

specific time block. Sign-up sheets are available in the

The Word in Our Lives:
Readings for January 8, 2017
The Epiphany of the Lord
First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6
Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness
covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his
glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about;
they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.
Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall
be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you,
dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and
proclaiming the praises of the LORD.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13
Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6
Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for your benefit,
namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. It was not made known to people in other
generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are
coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in
Jerusalem, saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do
him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling
all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They
said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem,
land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to
shepherd my people Israel." Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the
star's appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you
have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage." After their audience with the king
they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over
the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the
child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their
treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to
return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
estrella y hemos venido a adorarlo".
Stewardship
Happy New Year! It has been another wonderful year

much happiness, health, wealth, and good fortune to
all.

A NOTE FROM THE CEMETERY COMMITTEE
It’s that time of year again when we remember our
beloved family and friends who have gone before us
by placing wreaths, plants and greens on their graves.
We would ask you to please follow our rules and
regulations as to what can and can’t be placed on the
graves. As a reminder: No glass containers, lights,
wire pins or digging holes in the sod to hold
containers, potted plants or vases. They constitute a
potential safety hazard to cemetery visitors and
workers. Also, no crosses are to be hammered into the
ground. Not only do they weaken the headstone
foundations but they are very difficult to remove once
the ground freezes. Please do not leave anything that
has sentimental value on a headstone as the cemetery
staff is not responsible for items that are discarded.
Thank you for your cooperation. Any questions about
St. Francis Xavier/Old Bohemia, please contact Marla
Dill-Palmer at 302-378-5410. Any questions about St.
Rose of Lima, please contact Bette Luzetsky at 410885-5403.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS
(New Years) Traditionally people make resolutions to
improve themselves at the beginning of the year. In
marriage, since you are united in love, what improves
one spouse also improves the other. What marriage
building practice do you want to start or continue
during 2017?
PARENTING POINTERS
According to tradition, 3 kings came to honor the baby
Jesus and we call this feast the Epiphany (the
recognition of Jesus as God by the larger world).
Consider giving something gold, sweet smelling, or
soothing (myrrh) to your child as a sign of God's
presence within him or her.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
"Octave" comes from the Latin word for "eight," and
since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of
days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of
perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early
Christians called Sunday the "eighth day," since it
was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected
life, the Lord's Day. By the seventh century, people
regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one
great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people
were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh
century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas
didn't claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did
get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian
feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a
feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for
centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the
Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the
earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of
God.

A Winter’s Reminder—
· · Before venturing out, it is always prudent to call
the parish office to check our open or closed status.
You may also consult our parish website.
· · Personal Safety (yours and others on the road) is
our main concern.
One does not put one’s self in a state of serious sin
by missing Mass on a day when travel to/from
church would be hazardous and put one’s self or
others in danger.
POWER OF PRAYER
Prayer is powerful…...do you have someone or
something for which you would like prayers? You may
phone the Parish Office or email your prayer requests
to Kathy Dolde at [email protected] and they will
pass them on to members of our Prayer Chain.
Parishioners are also welcome to join our prayer group.
All it involves is getting an email and praying for the
person or petition. If you are interested, please contact
Kathy.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
The AFF Committee needs your help and your input to
accomplish our Mission. Join the people of God here
at St. Joseph Church and St. Rose Church in bringing
the gift that is Jesus Christ to the Adult Faith
Community here in themes that are practical and
relevant to all of us. As adults, most of us have no
formal faith formation after high school and adult faith
formation is at least as important as learning about our
profession/job or our role as a parent, or a spouse. If
you are interested in joining us or learning more about
what we do and who we are please contact: Fr. Kelley
or Mary Kirk at 302-378-5800 or John Ruane at 302378-2217.
WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Please join us for Bible Study on Wednesday mornings
at 9:30 AM in the parish center when we break open
the Scriptures for the coming Sunday. We encourage
people to share how the readings touch their lives or to
sit quietly and listen as others reflect on them. The
conversation is easy and informative. Come when and
as often as you’d like. If you have questions please call
302-378-5800.
ROSARY AT BROADMEADOW
The Rosary is prayed each Wednesday at 11:00 AM at
Broadmeadow Nursing Home. Any parishioner is
welcome to attend and participate. We are also in need
of people to lead the rosary. If you are able to help
please call Helen Gaden at 302-376-0711.
CHARISMATIC PRAYER MEETINGS
Come and see what a Charismatic prayer meeting is all
about. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, at
7:00PM, in the parish complex. There is usually a brief
teaching on one of the charismatic gifts or aspect of
faith, followed by singing and praising the Lord. If
you have any questions, call Linda Wills @ 302-4491498 or Cookie Ruane @ 302-378-2217.
WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER
“And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in
her heart.” Sometimes we need to reflect on how to let
God live with us in our marriages. Explore how by
attending a WorldWide Marriage Encounter weekend
on March 24-26, 2017 in Rehoboth Beach, DE. For
more information, visit our website at www.wwmedelmar.org or to register for the weekend, please call

Parents: we don’t know much about the hidden life of
Jesus as He grew up under the loving care of Joseph
and Mary. What we do know is that both Joseph and
Mary trusted firmly in God’s promises. Do you have a
daughter or son that God might be calling to priesthood
or religious life? If so, how are you modeling trust in
God for them? Watching a child discern and respond
to any kind of vocation is always an act of faith. If you
think your daughter or son might have a religious
vocation and would like to speak about it, please call or
write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of
Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113,
[email protected]). Be sure to visit our website:
www.cdow.org/vocations!
Happy New Year! This Sunday
we bring in the New Year and
celebrate the Blessed Mother
Mary. As you contemplate your
New Years resolutions I would challenge you to make
the declaration this year to, like Mary, say yes to God.
When reflecting on Mary I am always drawn back to
the fact that despite the issues it may have caused her,
she still said yes to God. Contemplate how you have
said yes to God and in what way is God calling you to
continue to say yes to Him. We all have different gifts
and talents to offer so consider utilizing these in
support of the Church and its mission.
