2012 Central New York NATIVE PLANT Shopping Guide Compiled by Habitat Gardening in Central New York a chapter of Wild Ones: Native Plants, Natural Landscapes Thank you for using the 2012 CNY Native Plant Shopping Guide We know there are many choices for buying plants for your landscape, and we thank you for using this Guide to select plants that are native to our central New York state area. Using native plants, shrubs and trees in your yard and garden provides many benefits to both people and our environment. This Guide includes suggested resources to learn more about native plants and natural landscape gardening. THANK YOU! About this Guide This Guide was created by Habitat Gardening in CNY to help you learn about and find native plants for purchase. We invited nurseries in CNY to provide us with a list of native plants they plan to sell during the growing season. Their responses were reviewed and compiled into this Guide, which may be freely downloaded, printed and shared. It may not be sold. The nurseries in this Guide did not pay to be included, nor were they paid to participate. View online or download additional copies of this Guide from our website www.hgcny.org. The plants are listed two ways: Section 1: By botanical name for ferns, grasses/sedges/rushes, wildflowers, vines, shrubs, and trees Section 2: By common name for these plant types List entries in BOLD type are “Biodiversity All-Stars” according to experts Doug Tallamy and William Cullina because these plants strongly foster the important goal of increasing biodiversity. Please consider including some of them in your landscape. Of course, any of the plants in this Guide are beneficial and make fine choices, too. This Guide’s definition of “native” We sought to list only plants native to the northeast U.S. according to: • Native Plants of the Northeast by Don Leopold • William Cullina’s books: Wildflowers; Native Trees, Shrubs, & Vines; Native Ferns, Moss & Grasses • the USDA Plants Database showing plants’ native range A word about cultivars and hybrids—Please read plant labels carefully Although our plant lists indicate whether cultivars of plants are available, we encourage you to purchase the species rather than cultivars or hybrids, even if the label says “Native.” Species (plants that are NOT cultivars or hybrids) provide more genetic diversity (an element of biodiversity) and are more likely to retain desirable habitat qualities. A cultivar can be identified by reading its label. The cultivar name is written capitalized, unitalicized and in single quotes, i.e., Trillium grandiflorum ‘Rosalie’.” In this example, Trillium grandiflorum is the Genus and species, and ‘Rosalie’ is the cultivar. A hybrid is identified with an ‘x’; for example, Coreopsis x ‘Moonbeam’ is a cultivar of hybrid origin. In fact, the ideal choices for biodiversity are plants grown from local seeds and plants. For example, Amanda’s Garden, The Plantsmen Nursery, and White Oak Nursery sell some plants grown from local seeds and plant sources. Shopping tips • Use the full botanical name, including the first (Genus) and second (species) names to identify plants. Common names can be helpful, but don’t rely on them. They can differ from place to place and person to person, and more than one common name can refer to the same plant. Occasionally even botanical names change and since nurseries vary in which they use, we have included some alternatives. • Research and plan your purchases with a copy of a native plant reference book. Know the conditions on your site and choose plants that will thrive in those conditions. We recommend Native Plants of the Northeast by Don Leopold, which is available at the Onondaga County Public Library and at bookstores. Bring your books and lists with you on all your shopping expeditions! • As mentioned before, read plant labels carefully and compare them with your books and lists. Be aware that plants labeled as “Native” may not be native to our area. This is especially true of plants sold at national chain “big box” stores. Plants native to the Pacific Northwest, for example, may be native to the continent, but won’t have the most desirable habitat qualities for CNY. • Patronize nurseries that sell nursery-propagated native plants from seeds or cuttings. Never dig plants from the wild or buy plants that have been dug from the wild. Ask the nursery about the source of their plant materials. • Call ahead to confirm nursery hours and the availability of your desired plants before setting out. • Please mention to the nursery that you are using this Guide.
