Games to Help with Reading
Words
• Buried Treasure
• Practises reading real and non-words
• Use a selection of words using 1 spelling
(grapheme)
• Children read the words and decide if it is
real or not.
• Keep the real words as treasure
• Develop game by using a mixture of
spellings that you child is practising.

Use table or word lists to help you.
Games to Help with Reading
Words
• Word Sort
• Encourages your child to spot sound/spelling in a
word.
• Choose 2 or 3 graphemes. 2 they know well and 1
they are learning. Ow ou ar
• Write out words with those spellings onto cards.
• Use a timer. How quickly can you sort the words?
• Focus on looking for that spelling/grapheme.
• Extend: How many words can we read in 2
minutes?

• Like ‘Word Sort’ but add in a word that does not
contain the focus spelling/grapheme.

• Choose lists of words.
• Mix up the words to practise a range of

• How many words can you read in 1 minute?
• Can we beat our score?

• Look for words in books that have similar
spelling patterns.
• Create posters or lists of words with the
same patterns.
• Same, game, fame, lame, tame
• Sail, tail, fail, mail.
• Rhyme can support with spelling.
