January - February - Wood Dale Public Library

Wood Dale Public Library 520 N. Wood Dale Road Wood Dale, IL 60191 Phone: 630‐766‐6762 Fax: 630‐766‐5715 Web: www.wooddalelibrary.org The I-Spy Book Series, books that feature pictures with hidden items to find, are very popular with our
residents. In this spirit, we have highlighted several improvements for you to discover at the library and
upcoming changes for you to “keep your eyes open for.” Sometimes you do not see the changes when
they are happening before your very eyes!
1. We have made several changes to improve lighting and access to the book collections. Have you noticed……
• The new maple end panels on the library shelves that allow for great library displays.
• The cabinetry tops from the juvenile bookshelves are gone! Now the light pours down on the books, instead
of the top of a bookcase!
• The library lobby was recently painted white with a new display board for announcements over the drinking
fountain.
• Check out the lighting on the interior perimeter walls of the library. A recent light bulb upgrade project has
significantly improved lighting in those areas.
2. Have you noticed the colorful area rug in the Children’s play area, the new children’s curved seating unit, and new
toys for the children to enjoy when visiting the Library?
3. Did you know we have relabeled many items in the Young Adult book collection with LARGER PRINT, so it is easier
to locate these titles?
4. Is the seating more comfortable in the meeting room when you are attending a library program? Is it easier to set-up
tables when you are hosting a meeting at the Library? The new lightweight, mesh chairs make setting up and sitting
for llibrary programs more enjoyable. As a plus, the new chairs are eco-friendly, made completely from recycled
material. The flip-top tables on wheels make moving tables a more physically friendly endeavor!
Upcoming Changes for You to Discover
New Circulation Area and Technology Center
1. The library received a grant to replace our Circulation Desk with a new ADA accessible unit.
• The new Circulation Area-will be located where the public computing area currently is located. We have
recently finished design details of the desk, so expect the desk to arrive in EARLY spring.
• We are converting existing staff space into a Technology Center. The Technology Center will have two labs
and a support center. One lab will have eight computers, with the second lab able to host up to 20
computers. (The Library is applying for a Gates Foundation matching grant for new computers…stayed
tuned for future details!)
2. New Book Drop in Library Lobby
• Look for the new library book drop located to the right at the library lobby entrance. The book drop will have
two slots – one for regular library material and the second for audiovisual material. If you have late material
that needs immediate check-in, please bring it to the Circulation Desk for our attention. We hope having the
book drop in the lobby will improve traffic flow in the Circulation Check-Out area.

effectively protect their assets, avoid probate expenses and distribute their estate to their heirs.

Don’t Pay College Sticker Price - Tuesday, January 20 at 7 p.m.
This program introduces the three key areas of opportunity to reduce the
overall cost of a college education. For many families college tuition is the
largest expense they will ever face. To make matters worse, the escalating
pace of tuition inflation has become downright terrifying. Fortunately,
parents do not have to tackle this daunting challenge alone. The college financial aid system,
which includes scholarships, grants, student loans and tax-saving opportunities, was designed
to help relieve this expensive burden. This beneficial system provides relief for all parents—
not just low or moderate-income families.
Book Discussion Group
Interested in sharing your love of books with others? The adult book discussion group meets
Tuesday, January 20 and Tuesday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. The titles for this program are The
Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards for the January meeting, and Team of Rivals: The

examines paintings, photographs, sculptures and material culture relating to
Lincoln and their historical context.

a free Valentine gift. Refreshments will be served.
Living History of Abraham Lincoln - February 26 at 7 p.m.

Abraham Lincoln to life in a one-hour dramatic monolog. The well-loved
president will speak about his early life: growing up in Kentucky and Indiana,
attending a one-room school, and earning his first dollar. He will discuss
major elections and campaigns such as the one when evangelist Peter
Cartwright asked Lincoln if he was going to Heaven or Hell, and Lincoln
replied, “I’m going to Congress.” Of course, more of the famed Lincoln
humor will be featured: stories about critics, office-seekers, lawyers, generals,
and Congressmen. Learn more about the man, his life both political and personal, and his
legacy to the American people.

Forgiveness
Love and Forgiveness in the Presence of the Enemy
From January to May 2009, the library is going to have a new program for readers. Let’s Talk
About It: Love and Forgiveness, a reading and discussion series, made possible through a
grant from the American Library Association and the Fetzer Institute. Each month, a discussion
will be based on one of five books chosen for the theme of Love and Forgiveness in the Presence of the Enemy. Wars, betrayals, misjudgments, all call for forgiveness. Is it possible to love
and forgive those who hurt us?
The discussions will be led by a local scholar, Dr. Linda Burke. Dr. Burke is a professor of
English Literature at Elmhurst College with an extensive background in leading book discussions.
Join us for our discussions! The dates and titles for upcoming programs are as follows:
