William Thorne

was an American artist, known primarily as a portrait painter (but also
as an illustrator). He was born in Delavan, Walworth County, Wisconsin on January 20th,
1863. Mr. Thorne also died there, on January 10th, 1956, following a full life of: travel,
encounters with the elite of his times, and many unique experiences. His notoriety as a
painter, indeed his success (dare we say, “fame”) was realized during his own lifetime.

William’s first paternal ancestor came to this country from England in about 1650,
settling in Massachusetts, and later in Flushing, Queens County, New York. His name
was also was William Thorne.

Will’s father, Nicholas Thorne2 was born 1822, in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., New
York, the son of Nicholas and Eliza. Nicholas had likewise led a life of adventure, having
crossed the equator four times (on a whaling vessel) before he was aged to twenty.
Nicholas was present in Wisconsin by early 1847 (a new Territory since 1837),
doubtless, to buy or lay-claim to land. He was still a very young man, having arrived just
prior to Wisconsin statehood (1848). He came to Delavan before the arrival of the Mabie
Brothers’ “United States Olympic Circus”. His local destiny, through ties to the eventual
“Delavan Circus Colony”, began in June of 1847, having sold 380 acres of land3 to the
Mabie brothers, Edmund4 and Jeremiah5 (who soon established their off-season base,
on the north-shore of Delavan Lake). Nicholas began a career with the Mabie circus, and
worked as their boss hostler6 for 5 years - his specialty: procuring non-ring horses.
Sometime later, he set up a horse stable at Marshalltown, IA., dealing (almost
exclusively) with circuses, but returned to Delavan, 1875, serving as Village Constable
(for 6 years) and Town Marshal (for 2 terms). Nicholas died on March 22nd, 1899, in
Delavan.
Thus, “Will” (as William was called), was born into the up-and-coming circus colony at
Delavan, which eventually produced many such organizations, including the Ringling
Brothers, P.T. Barnum and Bailey Circus – billed as the “Greatest Show on Earth”7.
Will’s mother was Maria (AKA Marie) Louise Gaston8 (c.f. the death record9 of her son),
Harry P. Thorne (Will’s older brother). She married Nicholas Thorne on the 19th of May,
1857 in Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin. She had been born in 11-Nov-1835, at Cayuga
County, New York, to Nathan Brockway Gaston (b.17-Mar-1810 Auburn, Cayuga Co.,
NY., d.16-Jul-1900 Beloit, Rock Co., WI., a son of James Gaston and Lydia Irish), and
his first wife, Amelia Clussman-Tillinghast (b.04-Sep-1815 Bellona, Yates Co., NY., d.09Oct-1842 Bellona, Yates Co., NY., a daughter of John Lamb Tillinghast, a former U.S.
Congressman from Rhode Island, and wife, Rebecca Power-Tillinghast). Her father,
Nathan remarried in 1844, to Ann Eliza Battain-Gaston, b.1819, d.1912 - a daughter of
Augustine J. Battain and wife, Amelia. Ann was a cousin of his deceased wife).
Marie died in before 1880, probably in Wisconsin (in-as-much-as her husband is listed
as a widower, on the 1880 US Census).
All of the four (4) Thorne children were born in Delavan.

Perhaps the most picturesque figure on the circus grounds was this man who had charge of all the
baggage (work) horses on the show. Working closely with the superintendent and the department heads, he
and his horses with their drivers 'spotted' all the heavy wagons onto their locations on the show grounds. In
early railroad show days, these same horses had to move all wagons to and from the railroad crossing, or
'runs'. In still earlier days, on the 'Mud Shows', the boss hostler, his teamsters and stock had to pull the
entire show over often muddy roads between towns. The boss hostler was active and on duty until the last
piece of equipment was on or off the lot. Many days, he was in the saddle, for sixteen or more hours of the
day. Until 'gasoline' took over completely in 1938 and 1940, this man was really the 'king of the circus lot'.

William Thorne married in the “Hollister” home (on 4th Street, Delavan), December 6th,
1917 (some sources say, 1918) to Margaret Grace Lowe14 (b.03-Nov-1893, d.24-Jul1966, bur. 27-Jul-1966), daughter of Margaret Hollister-Lowe15. Will and Margaret had
two children:
Their first-born was, daughter, Margaret Frances Thorne (b.~1920, d.????). She married
first, Robert Hollister, then Dana W. Smith. Her daughter, (William’s grand-daughter)
survives: Margaret Ann (ca 2014, private data). A second child (also a daughter), was
born and died in 1934. William was aged to 71 at the time. The dead infant was named,
Lydia Ann Thorne16 .
Prior to his marriage, William had taken art lessons from a local teacher, Albert McCoy.
While working as a student (and then, as an illustrator), William spent much of his early
life away from his home State. In the mid 1880s, he enrolled in evening classes at the
school of the “Art Institute of Chicago”17 (where he studied for two years). Then, in 1887
and 1888, he attended the antique class of the “National Academy of Design”18 in New
York City. While in New York, William executed portraits, to earn a living.
Thorne entered the antique class of the National Academy of Design during the 1887-88
term, and won a medal for the first work he exhibited at the National Academy in 1888.
After deciding to continue his artistic education abroad, Thorne traveled to Paris
sometime around 1890. He studied for three years at the "Académie Julian"19 (Paris,
France) with Jules Lefevbre and Jean-Paul Laurens, also working with Jean Joseph
Benjamin-Constant. During his three years in Paris, Thorne's portrait clients were most
often Americans living in France. Before returning to the United States, Thorne painted
in "Etretat" in 1892.

“L'Aiguille Creuse” (Eye of the Needle), Etretat, Normandy, France.
Étretat is a sea-side village in the Seine-Maritime department in the Haute-Normandie
region in northwestern France - the site is best known for its cliffs, including three natural
arches and the pointed "needle". These cliffs and the associated resort beach attracted
artists including Eugène Boudin, Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet, and were featured
prominently in the 1909 Arsène Lupin novel, "The Eye of the Needle" [L'Aiguille Creuse],
by Maurice Leblanc, and he also spent time in London.
Thorne settled in New York around 1902, establishing his career as a society portraitist
at his Carnegie Hall studio.
Among his sitters were: the children of Andrew Carnegie and Jay Gould. John Singer
Sargent20 (painted a portrait of William in 1905, which is inscribed "to my friend Thorn"),
and William Merritt Chase numbered among his more prominent artist friends. William
married Margaret Grace Lowe in 1918 (some sources say, 1917). During the second
decade of the 1900s, Thorne returned permanently to Delavan, the city of his birth,
building a replica of his “Carnegie Hall” studio (inside his home). In this later period of
his career, Thorne was referred to as the “dean of Wisconsin portrait painters”.
Perhaps the one great advantages (at the time) which the "Academie Julian" possessed
over its rival, the "Beaux Arts", was its eclecticism - although that eclecticism was
possibly not complete for impressionism - as exemplified in the work of, Monet, who
would hardly have found favor with the Julian professors. That is to say, that while the
traditions of the Académie were nobly upheld by Le Febvre and Laurens, the modern
spirit in art of the day, was fairly well represented by Doucet. It is but natural however,
that an earnest and conscientious student, venerating as he must, the skill and
knowledge of men such as Le Febvre and Laurens - should be disposed to yield to their

overmastering influence - much as he may be attracted by the light and joyousness of
the modern movement. It was as well that it should be so, for there were few greater
masters of the human form than they - certainly no better workmen - and some have
little faith in the originality or individuality of an artist under thirty. The history of art
teaches that style and individuality are the “ripe fruit” of years, of following a stronger and
more knowledgeable master, or masters.
In Mr. Thorne's “Purity”, one sees an honest following of the traditions of the Académie,
together with a reaching-out toward the more modern. The picture has much of the
quality of Le Febvre, much of his excellent drawing and workman, like putting-on of
paint, it shows also that impulse toward tenderness, sentiment, and light, which is
affecting all the younger painters.
Mr. Thorne then returned from Paris, where he had studied since 1889, in the Julian
school, under Le Febvre, Constant, Doucet, and Laurens. He won an honorable
mention at the Salon of 1899, and was an exhibitor in the Champs Elysées Salon, in
1890. His first instruction in art was at the National Academy of Design, in New York,
where he received a first medal - for drawing.

OBITUARY
As was published by the Delavan Enterprise newspaper, of Delavan, Walworth Co., WI.,
on Wednesday, January 11th, 1956, reproduced (in its entirety) here:
“DELAVAN ENTERPRISE, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1956
William Thorne, Noted World Portrait Painter Dies. Death Claims Most Famous Citizen
of Delavan on Tuesday. William Thorne, world famous portrait painter and Delavan’s
most famous citizen, died at his home on North Fourth Street here early Tuesday. He
would have been 93 Years old in ten days.
A contemporary of such famous men as John Singer Sargent, Abbott Thayer, Charles
Dana Gibson and William N. Chase, Mr. Thorne shortly after the turn of the century and
well along in the 1920's until he retired to his lovely home in this city, was the toast of
Paris, London, and New York.
He did portraits of the world's most famous people and maintained a studio in New
York's Carnegie Hall, where such famous personages as the late Andrew Mellon's
daughter, Jay Gou1d's sons, members of the Vanderbilt family and others sat while he
did their portraits.
The son of Nicholas and Marie Gaston Thorne, he was born in Delavan. He attended
grade school in Delavan but early developed a desire to sketch and paint. He went to
Chicago when he was eighteen and attended night school at the Art Institute. He got a
position as a commercial artist to support himself while he studied. After two years in
Chicago he went to New York, where he studied at the National Academy of Design
where many of his sketches and portraits now hang. While in New York he painted
portraits on the side, and saved enough to go to Paris.
He was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York.
Mr. Thorne lived in the Latin colony [sic] {“Latin Quarter” -ed.} in Paris for three years
and painted what is his most noted work, ”Song Without Words" depicting a woman in a
white dress with a zither on her lap. With it, he won the award from the “Sociéte des
Artistes Français” in 1891 and saw it exhibited in the Paris salon, where it won
handsome prize money which went with such an honorable award. He sold it for
thousands of dollars, to say nothing of the royalties that came in after reproductions of
the painting were made.
Carnegie Hall Studio
On the second floor of his home on North Fourth Street, Mr. Thorne had built a studio
which is a replica of his studio in Carnegie Hall. Lining the walls of the studio are a
number of works he did in Paris and London and reproductions of many of his other

12
paintings. On the fireplace mantel are exquisite pastorals and seascapes painted at
Etretat, France, on the English Channel. They were executed by Mr. Thorne in 1892 and
the reproductions have been varnished into gleaming, jewel-like brilliance.
In an attractive downstairs room, is the painting of Thorndale, a beautiful estate on the
Hudson River in Duchess county, New York, where Mr. Thorne spent several vacations.
The family owning the estate were distant cousins of the Thornes.
One of the most beautiful portraits in Mr. Thorne's home is one that he made of his wife.
And also another of his niece, and nephew, Zayde, and William Holland, formerly of
Delavan, which appeared on the cover of the St. Nicholas magazine for children which
was popular early in this century.
He Loved Paris.
Mr. Thorne loved to recall his days in Paris and the reminiscences of his years in the
French capital. Paris exceeded his fondest dreams. It was a glorious and wonderful city
he recalled to an Enterprise reporter, several years ago. He perfected his workmanship
there at the Academie Julian. During that period he completed several portraits of
wealthy Americans.
Mr. Thorne had been abroad a half dozen times having gone to England and France for
vacations and to attend the great art exhibitions in those countries.
One of Mr. Thorne's most famous pictures was "The Terrace", which is included in the
permanent collection of the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. It won an award
at the Buffalo International exposition in 1901.
Mr. Thorne considered John Singer Sargent as the greatest painter of the age in which he
lived. In his gallery, in his Delavan home there is a portrait of Mr. Thorne done by
Sargent. "Sargent - the greatest of them all and a fine friend”, was the way Mr. Thorne
put it.
Bought His Portrait
Mr. Thorne, in his last years in Delavan, delighted in telling a story about one of his
pictures – “June", which J. J. Phoenix of Delavan came across. Mr. Thorne had sold it
to a dealer years ago, but Mr. Phoenix bought it and now has it at his Walworth Avenue
home.
Mr. and Mrs. Thorne were married in the Hollister home, at the end of North Third
Street, on December 6, 1917. Mrs. Thorne is the former Margaret Grace Lowe, daughter
of Mrs. Margaret Hollister-Lowe.

with the Rev. B. A. Kassilke officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery.
There will be a visitation at the funeral home, Thursday evening from 7 to 9.
Mr. Thorne was regarded as the “dean of Wisconsin portrait painters” and had won

Painted in Paris, this elegant interior displays a young couple engaged
in intimate conversation during tea. Thorne creates a sense of
informality, evident in the casual placement of the tennis racquet on
the floor and the relaxed poses of the figures. This affluent milieu,
seen especially in the lovely still life arrangement on the table and
overhanging shelf, is bathed in a light, softly filtered through the
“diaphanous” (especially of fabric, light, delicate, and translucent)
curtains. In this sensuous and dusky atmosphere, the figures are
rendered with the solid modeling of form typical to the American
translation of French Impressionism.

Grace Townsend Hawkshurst-Gray
1910
Oil on canvas
34-3/8" x 47-½" and overall in the frame it is 39-5/8" x 52-½".
Signed upper right.
Grace Townsend Hawkshurst-Gray (2nd wife of Judge, John Clinton Gray, a
prominent New York jurist and for many years a judge of the court of appeals),
painted circa 1910 - in all her magnificent glory seated in a chair and dressed
to perfection holding her fan in her hand. The painting is spectacular, in muted
colors and done in the art nouveau era. It is in a magnificent frame which has
elegant art nouveau details on the interior molding and at the center of each
exterior edge. The frame is carved and gold gilded and there is a little bit of red
gesso showing through the frame here and there. The oil painting itself has a
little bit of paint flaking on the lower left from her hand down to the bottom of
the painting and over to the right - it appears that it is just where the canvas
was probably not so well prepared as the rest of it was. At the lower right of
her dress (you can only see it from the back) there is a little patch - and it
absolutely does not show on the front. On the back of the frame there is a little
label of "Phillip Suval Fine Arts" from New York, with a summer shop in South
Hampton, Long Island.
Face-on portrait of Grace Townsend Hawkshurst-Gray, seated, wearing
pearls, holding a fan in her left-hand, as her right hand reposes upon the armrest of an upholstered, straight-back chair.

Thorndale

“Thorndale” was an estate owned by cousins (an estate established in

in Duchess County, NY., where he spent several vacations.

“THORNDALE” - Located south of the Village of Millbrook, sits "Thorndale", an estate
established in 1787, by a relative of the same name, William Thorne. Throughout their residency
in Millbrook, the Thorne family’s generosity touched virtually every facet of the community. Isaac
and Hannah Thorne were the first family members to settle in Dutchess County, New York. They
were originally from Devonshire, England, but relocated to America and eventually to Long Island,
then to Dutchess County in 1725. Soon after, other family members followed the couple to
Millbrook. Devout Quakers, in 1780, the Thorne family helped to erect the Nine Partners Meeting
House. Aside from providing Quakers in the area with a place to worship, the site became a
critical component of the Underground Railroad. In 1787, Isaac’s brother, William acquired 400
acres south of Millbrook, thereby establishing Thorndale. In 1795, the two siblings opened a
country store in Mechanic (a hamlet in the Town of Washington), and quickly gained the esteem
and business of their neighbors. William’s son, Samuel eventually took over the business and
continued its growth. Samuel became an aggressive importer, offering wool products from
England and cotton garments from India in the establishment. But it was Samuel’s son, Jonathan
who is credited with generating the family fortune. Trained in savvy business practices by his
father, Jonathan moved to New York City in 1820, and became engaged in dry goods. Following
his 1823 marriage to Lydia Corse, Jonathan became associated with his father-in-law’s leather
business, and succeeded him in it, in 1830. Jonathan Thorne grew up in the family store and
attended the Nine Partners School, right across the street and next to the Quaker meeting house.
After moving to New York City he amassed a fortune dealing in leather goods. Samuel Thorne
died in 1849, and one year later, Jonathan Thorne remodeled the house at Thorndale and began
to use it as a summer residence. His extensive modifications included an architectural shift from
its original Hudson River Bracketed design, to Late Greek Revival. Thorne also began to
purchase thoroughbred Shorthorn cattle for the family farm, and was one of the first Americans to
import cattle and sheep from England, for breeding purposes. Continuing to pursue the practice,
Thorne soon had a monopoly of Dutchess and Oxford Shorthorn cattle in the country. At the time
of his death in 1884, Jonathan Thorne was: Director of the Central Trust Co.; Leather
Manufacturers’ National Bank; and the Sixth Avenue Railroad Co. To pay tribute to their parents,
Jonathan and Lydia Thorne’s five children funded the construction of Thorne Memorial School in
1894, a structure that still stands on Franklin Avenue in the village. Eleventh generation family
member, Oakleigh B. Thorne, 81, now resides at Thorndale (circa 2014).

GENEALOGY of the William Thorne Family – “Narrative”: (Thorne ancestors)
nd
Note to the reader: Samuel Thorne (the subject of the following Biographical Sketch), was a 2
st
cousin to William Thorne (their respective fathers were thus, 1 cousins). Samuel was the owner
of “Thorndale” (often frequented as a vacation retreat, by William).
-ooOoo-
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: “SAMUEL THORNE”
By, Samuel Thorne, Jr.
Samuel Thorne, who was elected a Life Member of the New York Genealogical and Biographical
Society, on January 13th, 1914, was born on the sixth of September, 1835, at the family
homestead, "Thorndale", which is located in what is now, the village of Millbrook, among the hills
of Dutchess County, NY., and about fourteen miles east of Poughkeepsie. It was here, he early
developed that love of nature which deeply influenced his character.
The Thornes were originally members of the "Society of Friends". The records show that William
Thorne, of the sixth generation previous, who probably came from, Essex. England, was made a
freeman, at Lynn, Massachusetts, May 2nd, 1638. On October 19th, seven years, later he was
named, by Governor Kieft, as one of the eighteen original patentees of the Town of Flushing, L.I.
{Long Island, New York -ed.} and twelve years after that, he appears as one of the proprietors of
Jamaica, L.I., and as residing there with his wife Sarah. His son, Joseph married, Mary Bowne,
and their son Isaac, who was born in 1698, was the first of the Thornes to move from Long Island,
to Dutchess County. He and eight other members of the Society of Friends, who organized a
group known as the "Nine Partners", acquired a parcel of land, upon which they erected a
building, within a mile or two of the house, in which his great-great-grandson was to first see the
light of day. Isaac married Hanna Haight, who bore him ten children. His seventh child, William,
through whom the direct line is traced, was born in 1742, William married Jemima Titus, and
became the father of six children, the third of whom, was named Samuel. The latter, afterward,
established one of the first trading posts and stores of general merchandise in the vicinity. He
married Phebe Dean, by whom he had two daughters, and in 1801, a son Jonathan. It was about
this time, that a farm of some six-hundred acres, a mile or two westward from the Nine Partners
property, was acquired. A house and outbuildings were built on a level stretch among the hills,
and the place was, in later years, called "Thorndale".
In spite of the attractions of "Thorndale", as Jonathan Thorne grew to manhood, he felt the call to
a business career, and went to New York City to seek his fortune. Here, he became interested in
the leather trade, and before many years, established himself as a successful leather merchant,
on Ferry Street, in that section of the city known as, "The Swamp". He was a man of rare
judgment and strict integrity. His wife formerly, Lydia Ann Corse, was famed for her gentle loving
disposition, and her many deeds of charity. It was in a home surrounded with such influences,
that Samuel Thorne grew up. Eleven children were born to this union, but only two sisters and
five brothers lived to maturity. Of these seven, Samuel Thorne was the fourth in age. Combining
in his nature, his mother's disposition, and his father's integrity and judgment, he made friends
easily, and once made they remained loyal to him through life.
The family first lived on Cliff Street, and young Samuel was sent to boarding school, in the
neighborhood of what is now, 36th Street, returning once a week to his family. At the age of
twelve, he had an experience which is rarely granted to a boy of that age, and which taught him a
valuable lesson in independence and resourcefulness. His father wished to visit the South in
winter time, and took Samuel with him to Charleston, South Carolina. While there, they happened
to attend a horse auction, and Samuel's eye was caught by a particular pony. He begged his
father to buy it. His father replied, "If I buy it, will thee ride it home?", to which, Samuel
enthusiastically rejoined in the affirmative. The pony was thereupon purchased, and another

friend being in the city, with a son fifteen years old, it was agreed that a pony should also be
purchased for him, and that he and Samuel should ride home together. The journey proved not
without mishaps as one of the ponies was taken ill not long after starting, but the hospitality which
they received by the way, and the persevering spirit of the boys, overcame the difficulties and
brought them safely to their destination.
While the family was growing up, all the time that could be spared from the city, was spent at
"Thorndale", and as the leather business prospered, Samuel was encouraged and assisted by his
father, to follow his natural bent, and develop the property as one of the foremost stock farms in
the country. Jonathan Thorne finally determined upon a plan considered quite unusual at the
time, of importing blooded, Short Horn cattle from England. He found in his son, Samuel, an
enthusiastic supporter. In the early fifties, accordingly, he was sent by his father to England for
this purpose. He then had the opportunity of visiting the principal herds in that country, and with
the advantage of expert advice, of selecting certain animals, whose fame later spread throughout
the United States, and back to England again. The importation of this stock at the time, was
looked-upon as an international event. The newspapers were full of it. "Grand Duke", a wonderful
animal, was purchased for $5,000, but his life was short, and he was succeeded as head of the
herd, by, "Grand Duke 2nd", in 1855. "Grand Turk", and "Duchesses" also of noble pedigree,
were purchased and sent to Thorndale. Within three years, Mr. Thorne had collected a herd of
Short Horn cattle, which while not the largest, was unexcelled for quality, in the whole world.
Visitors came from far and near, to see the Thorndale stock, but the day of greatest triumph for
the owner arrived, when an order for a shipment came from England, to replenish the herds
there.
In 1860, Samuel Thorne married Phebe S. Van Schoonhoven, daughter of William H. Van
Schoonhoven, of Troy, NY., and a descendant of one of the oldest Dutch families of the Hudson
Valley. On her maternal side, Miss Van Schoonhoven was also descended from a Quaker family,
whose home was at Lithgow, about eight miles northeast of Millbrook, where Mr. Thorne first met
her. On his wedding journey, he again visited England. At that time, his purchases included wellbred stock other than "Short Horns", such as, "Southdown sheep" and "Essex swine", and he
took special pride in the fact that, of all the animals at "Thorndale", there were none not of fullblood, even down to the pigeons and lop-eared rabbits. For eight years longer, he successfully
continued the stock farm, but at the end of this time, opportunity arose for selling-out the herd,
and as there were urgent reasons for his moving to the city, he did so. Then began his successful
business career in New York, where he associated with his brothers in the leather business.
Thorne was a director of the Pennsylvania Coal Company, one the pioneer companies in the
Pennsylvania anthracite field, controlled valuable deposits near Scranton, and Pittston, Pa. It was
not long before his son Samuel, was also elected to that board. In 1895, Samuel Thorne was
elected President of the company, and held this office, until the stock of the company was
purchased in 1900, by the Erie Railroad. Mr. Thorne's position in the world, brought him into
touch with railroad bank and trust companies. By reason of the character and ability which he in
his business relationships, he was sought as a director, or upon many boards, and he became a
member of the following: Bank of America; Central Trust Company; Great Northern Railway Co.;
Chicago Burlington & Quincy R.R. Co.; Securities Company; New York Life Insurance and Trust
Company; and the Sixth Avenue Railroad Company.
Beside his business activities, Mr. Thorne's appreciation of outdoor life and the humanities made
him a sympathetic and generous supporter of efforts to educate the general public in this line.
The American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, of which he was a
patron, the Botanical Gardens, and the New York Zoological Society, were among this number.
He was Vice-President of the last named society, which more than any other, appealed to him,
and for which, he gave liberally of his time and means.
In the early eighties, Mr. Thorne purchased the place in Millbrook, formerly owned by Mr. George
H. Brown, the New York banker. This property, which Mr. Thorne named, "The Crest", adjoined
"Thorndale" on the Northwest. There, he and his family regularly spent their summers, and there,

as the years went on, he was best-known and most beloved, both for his public spirit, and for his
kindly acts. Few of his neighbors, at some time or other, did not see that well-loved form on their
doorstep, with a basket of choice fruit, or some other delicacy in his hand, as an expression of his
thought and feeling for those within. Lasting monuments, to his breadth of interest in the
community, stand to day, in the well-equipped high school building, erected and given to the
Village of Millbrook, by him, and his surviving brothers and sister, in memory of their parents, and
in the attractive YMCA building, which his liberal contributions helped to make possible. Originally
a member of the Society of Friends, Samuel Thorne, after his marriage, became one of the
founders of the Dutch Reformed Church, at Millbrook. Here, he attended with scrupulous
regularity, and its pastor alone knew of the multitude of quiet deeds with which Mr. Thorne
blessed and helped those about him. Later, when the family moved to New York, Mr. Thorne
attended the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Thorne was an ardent sportsman. In his younger days, he enjoyed few pleasures more than
to roam over the country with a good dog, and gun. But the sport in which he took the keenest
interest, was that of salmon fishing. When death overtook him, he was on a salmon fishing trip,
on the St. John's River, in Canada, with his old friend, James J. Hill, of St. Paul. With a life of
seventy-nine years behind him, so strong was the spirit of his youth, that on Saturday July 3rd,
the day before he died, he killed six salmon, the largest of which, weighed twenty-eight pounds.
The funeral held on July 9th, from his home in Millbrook, was a striking testimony to the wide
esteem in which he was held.
So lived and died this Christian gentleman after nearly eighty years full of blessing honor and
usefulness He saw at various times members of seven generations of his family remembering his
great grandfather and having a son's grandchildren play at his knees In addition to his brother
Jonathan Thorne he was survived by his widow four sons a daughter fourteen grandchildren and
two great grandchildren.

GENEALOGY ANECDOTES:
a) This work was created as a public service - for persons genetically related to, or simply
interested by, the: Thorne, Gaston, Hollister and Lowe family histories, and genealogy.
Your Editor (Robert C. Kuhmann) is not directly related to any of the persons mentioned
herein.
b) The Hollister families of Walworth County, Wisconsin became “connected” to the
Thorne family - through William’s marriage to: Margaret Grace Lowe, a daughter of
Margaret Hollister-Lowe, his mother-in-law.
c) That same Hollister family has successively intermarried with various other local families
th
(many of which had established close ties to the “Delavan Circus Colony” of the 19
century), e.g. the Holland “equestrian” family. Indeed, Will Thorne’s father, Nicholas
Thorne, worked for the: “Mabie Brothers Circus” – the venerable, “grand-fathers” of the
Delavan Circus Colony.
d) The various Hollister families of: Walworth, Racine, Waukesha, and Rock counties,
Wisconsin are all closely related to each other, but are also collaterally related to our
Resseguie relatives (some of whom, were their contemporaries, in life). A few
intermarried even further …”connecting” yet more lineages to Mr. Thorne, et cie.
e) Ergo, the Andrews brothers (of Mukwonago, Waukesha Co., WI.), who provide “our” tiein. Sewell Andrews (the literal founder of that community), married Sarah J. Resseguie,
a sister of “our” Jane Resseguie. His brother, Frederick S. Andrews, married Emaline
Melissa Hollister, a daughter of Asa Hollister. Asa was a cousin to the Delavan Hollister
line.
f)
Oliver Van Valin, a farmer (married, Jane Resseguie). Nota bene: their wedding was the
first to be held in Walworth County, WI. (at Spring Prairie). Jane was a daughter of,
Abraham Resseguie and Lovina Robinson-Resseguie (the 5x-grand-parents of my son –
ed.) who arrived at “Pike River, Ouisconsin Territory” (Kenosha), in June of 1836. Oliver
and Jane Resseguie-Van Valin became life-long residents of “Caldwell’s Prairie” (Racine
Co., WI.) . and were the 4x-Great-Grand-parents to the son (b.1998), of your Editor. They
represent his maternal grand-mother’s side of our family, and provide a rather roundabout connection to the Thorne, Gaston, Hollister, and Lowe families of Delavan. Hence,
my interest as a historian and genealogist.
