IS ANGIE’S LIST VALID?
279 garage door companies receive its 2016 Super Service Award
In February, Angie’s List provided Door + Access Systems with
the list of all retail garage door companies that earned the 2016
Angie’s List Super Service Award (SSA). The list contains 279 door
companies in 40 states. We list them all here and encourage dealers to
send us your thoughts about the list’s validity.
Consumer review sites like Angie’s List are struggling to develop
a system that genuinely reflects consumer feedback. Angie’s List
hopes to emerge as a leader in a race with other review sites such as
Yelp, BBB, Houzz, Google, Facebook, HomeAdvisor, and others.
“This year’s winners are the first group of service pros to
earn the SSA since our consumer reviews became
accessible at a free membership level,” said
Angie’s List founder Angie Hicks.
Since the site’s beginning in 1995, consumers
needed to pay a membership fee to see reviews.
However, in July 2016, the site announced that
access to all reviews of home services companies
is now free of charge.
How to earn the SSA
Fewer than 5 percent of companies on Angie’s List meet
the award’s requirements, which include earning an A grade
average for the review period, passing a criminal background
check, and abiding by Angie’s List’s operational guidelines.
Companies are graded on an A through F scale in criteria ranging
from price to professionalism to punctuality, and ratings are updated

2016 award badges are displayed on winning company profiles (at
AngiesList.com) at no cost to companies that have earned and accepted
the award.
Angie’s List claims 4.5 million consumers, service providers in 720
categories, and 10 million verified reviews.
Beating bad reviews
Garage door businesses can hire services that monitor review sites,
“bury negative reviews,” and incentivize positive reviews. Do a
Google search for “online reputation management” to
see all the companies doing this.
Some door companies genuinely earn their
positive online reputations by continually
providing excellent service at fair prices and
responding to unhappy customers. Other
companies, however, have learned how to
manipulate the system, bury bad reviews, and
falsely generate positive reviews.
We post this list of Angie’s Super Service Award
winners in hopes that door dealers will respond with their
feedback about the legitimacy of Angie’s system. Is it fair?
