1. 1863 (Although in previous years, Thanksgiving was declared by Presidents, it
was celebrated on various days and had to be declared each year.)
2. President Lincoln (declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in hopes of bringing a
war torn country together.)
3. Clams, fish, corn, berries, nuts, onions, beans, spinach, cabbage, deer. (There may
or may not have been turkey and probably no potatoes either!)

Notes to Teacher:
The purpose of this activity is to teach students how to find information from various
sources. You may want to set parameters for students on how many of each type of
resource they can use. For example, I only allowed students to use a website for two
questions on any one scavenger hunt. This way, students get out of the habit of just
‘Googling’ something. I also required that students use at least one book, one real
bound encyclopedia, one online encyclopedia (my school subscribed to Grolier), and one
website. The purpose of questions 9 and 10 is to encourage students to think of their
own research questions and/or notice interesting information in their research.
