In this Edition:
Youth Court has begun at Guilford High School this spring. A diversionary program to
serve as an alternative from the traditional juvenile justice process, Youth Court uses
a restorative approach to addressing minor legal offenses committed by students. This winter 22 Guilford High School students were trained to serve as Youth
Court Peer Council Members. These Peer Council Members meet with families assigned to Youth Court to hear their story and create a contract to repair harm done to
the community and determine fair and appropriate interventions. Youth Court provides individuals who successfully complete the program a way to tell their story and
make up for what happened.

English 10:
In English 10, HPS students have been focusing on the topics of inequality, justice,
and prejudice. As a part of this literary unit, students are reading the foundational
texts, Twelve Angry Men and To Kill a Mockingbird, as well as supporting nonfiction
and multimodal texts: these include historical documents, (example: Jim Crow laws)
and photos, poems, and video (example: a clip from The Butler, which depicts the
nonviolent resistance of protesters during in a sit-in). Students are making connections between the themes of inequality, justice, and prejudice; examining and revising their own belief systems; and having meaningful discussions on these important
topics. Susan Callaway

On April 11th, Rock Valley College will be hosting the first annual RockMUN Conference. This is a simulation by the students of the United Nations Human Rights Council procedures. Model UN is for students in all Guilford academies that have an interest in political, social, economic and cultural activities. This is an experience that is
second to none and looks great on college applications. Debate will take place concerning the “Protection of Inherent Rights of Indigenous Peoples” and “Regulating
Human Rights in Transnational Corporations”. Participants will gain an outstanding
world view as well as elite skills in research, writing, collaboration, relevant problem
solving and public speaking.

FAFSA INFORMATION FOR SENIOR PARENTS
Please remember to apply for financial aid for your student. Even though the state grant
(MAP) may have run out there is still federal money available (PELL, Work Study, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans). Apply at FAFSA.gov.
A student’s financial need is determined by the following equation:
Cost of Attendance — Expected Family Contribution (EFC) = Financial Need
Mission
Statement:
In preparation
for post
secondary the
HPS Academy
mission is to
work
collaboratively
while inspiring
students to
explore 21st
century careers
in community
and human
services.
The Cost of Attendance (COA) is the total amount it will cost a family for a student to go
to college for an academic year. It takes into consideration tuition and fee, room and
board, books, supplies, transportation, childcare, costs associated with a disability and
miscellaneous expenses. Each college sets this figure. The Expected Family Contribution
(EFC) is an amount determined by formulas established by Congress and the individual
college, that indicate how much of a family’s resources should be available to help pay
for school.
After all corrections have been made to all financial information each family provides,
the financial aid administrator at each college which receives information from you will
create a financial aid package (or award) for each student. Using available resources, the
aid administrator gives each student the best possible combination of gift aid
(scholarship and grant monies which do not have to be repaid) and self-help (loans and
work study programs) monies to meet the student’s aid. These monies may be from federal and state and, in the case of public and private schools, campus resources.
Students are given a strict timeframe in which to respond to any or all of each school’s
offers, usually 15 to 21 days. Colleges and universities try to mail their packages to families as soon as possible, usually in March or April.
The best contact each family has while applying for financial aid is the financial aid administrator at each college in which the student is interested.

Piano Lab Becomes a Computer/Midi Lab
Our piano lab at Guilford recently got new computers which will have Sibelius music notation software and be connected to the keyboards. This will allow students in music classes to learn about writing, creating, and printing
music. Each student will have their own workstation, complete with headphones, in which to learn. Students in
piano and guitar classes have a performance on Thursday, March 26 th at 7 PM in our auditorium. This will be the
first ever guitar performance, along with about 20 piano students that will present a recital of varied musical
styles. Some will include vocals, duets or trios, and original music, popular hits, and classic piano works. Admission to the performance is free.

Spring Courtyard Cleanup
For the second year in a row Guilford High School students, led by the HPS Academy, will be spending their free
time outdoors beautifying the grounds around the school. Last year students combined for over 1000 hours of
community service by cleaning, pruning, trimming, and planting the front and quads of the building with the help
of our community outreach partners. This year we are once again hoping for an amazing student volunteer turnout, and we need your help. Starting in May the HPS Academy will be looking for donations of seeds, annual
and perennial plants, bulbs, shrubs, birdseed, yard bags, and yard tools to help us in our endeavor. If you have
something that you would like to contribute please contact [email protected] or [email protected]
for more information!

Guilford Theatre Department’s Spring Musical, THE WIZ
Following in the spirit of HPS’s goal of creating a viable recycling program, the Guilford Theatre
Department’s Spring Musical, THE WIZ, will be staged using as many recyclable products as possible. Parts of the scenery will be created with plastic bottles (soda, water milk, etc.), aluminum
cans, and other discarded junk (i.e. old clothes, bicycle tires, old CDs, DVDs, tapes), as well as reusing items from past productions. We have been receiving valuable help from Rockford businesses such as Goodwill and Pepsi as well as our own students and staff. We invite you all to
come out to see our Production to see how this endeavor turns out.
Performances are Thursday—Saturday, 4/23—4/25 @ 7 PM and Sun. 4/26 @ 2 PM.
This Week in Environmental Science….
Students in environmental science are continuing to maintain their aquatic ecosystems and are
due for a filter change next week. The biggest challenge to the project according to junior Tashayla Powell is “keeping the tank clean.” She is not alone in wishing there were easier ways to
maintain the balance of the water. On a weekly basis the students must use aquarium vacuums
to remove waste material that collects among the decorative rocks at the bottom. “I do not like
sticking my hand in the water!” agrees senior Darnell Birdsong. Luckily there are four students
per group, so senior Shamara Glover has Darnell’s back. “Thanks for all your hard work guys!”
says Chuy, the tetra. Yes, yes he did.

Thoughts on Guilford:
I’ve really enjoyed my time at Guilford because it offers so many opportunities whether it be for
extracurricular, learning, or leadership.
Thoughts on the ACT:
The ACT was definitely challenging but the Saturday ACT prep classes made me feel more comfortable
and offered many tips and tricks.

Thoughts on Guilford:
I really like the atmosphere of the school. The teachers and administrators genuinely care about
the students. If I was able to choose what high school to go to I would choose Guilford. I’m proud
to be a Guilford Viking.
Thoughts on the ACT:
I was really stressed about the test before test day, but it dissipated the day of the test. I think a part of
that was due to the help of the ACT classes on Saturdays.

Suspension
Re-entry
Students who are suspended out-of-school are
required to remain at
home during school hours
per a city ordinance. They
are NOT eligible to attend
or participate in ANY High
School sponsored event
until the suspension period has been completed.
Students who come onto
the High School property
while on suspension are
subject to arrest for trespassing. District policy is
that it is mandatory that
every student MUST have
a parent re-entry meeting
BEFORE returning from
suspension. That meeting
can happen anytime prior
to the end of the suspension or on the morning of
the date the student is
scheduled to return.
There are NO exceptions
to this policy.
After School
Tutoring Program
Teachers are now available
in the library after school
Monday-Thursday from 3:45

homework or projects, raising their grade, the use of a
computer, or just to study.
Transportation home on an
activity bus is available with
a student ID.
