CELEBRA
From the President
Dear Friends,
As we celebrate Gesu School’s transformational social and
educational accomplishments, we must also remember the
day-to-day challenges—of our children, our families and
our school.
The often quoted advice from Mahatma Gandhi, “We
must be the change we wish to see in the world,” deserves
contemplation.
As we work to transform Gesu School into a sustainable
business model to ensure its future, we thank you very, very
much for your loyal commitment and generosity.
Without your belief in our mission and without your
support, we would not be able to make Gesu Work!
This puts forth to each of us an urgent call to action. When
we see injustices, what do we do about them? When we
read about the high school dropout rates in our cities, what
do we do about that? When we see our society’s inequalities,
what do we do?
With many blessings and thanks,
Can we really make a difference? Can we really empower
our Gesu children to break the cycles of poverty, drugs and
violence? I answer with a resounding YES.
Christine S. Beck
President and CEO
We at Gesu believe that a quality, innovative elementary
school education provides the cornerstone for our children
to learn to love learning and to develop all of their Godgiven talents and gifts. The Jesuit and IHM influences help
strengthen our children’s faith and spirituality.
Although I wish we could serve thousands rather than
hundreds of children, each student we help sends out farreaching ripples. The success of many of our alums confirms
2
this, and they remember Gesu as they move along in their
own careers.

The Pursuit of Justice
in North Philadelphia
The countless challenges of life in the
inner city fuel a passion for justice—a
passion that underlies all that Gesu
School is and does. Through the vision
and determination of the Board of
Trustees, the Jesuits, the IHM sisters,
donors, faculty and volunteers, Gesu
brings about real systemic change for our
460 children every year.
Gesu School stands as a beacon of
hope in North Central Philadelphia.
Students are not “cherry picked” but
admitted simply because they live in the
neighborhood targeted by Gesu’s mission
of service. A Gesu education prepares
all students, from those who struggle to
those who are prep school and college
bound, for successful lives whether
as doctors, mechanics, firefighters or
lawyers.
As our 8 grade graduates matriculate
at appropriate high schools, often
against tremendous odds, they are living
testaments to the fact that Gesu works.
th
Again this year, all of our 8th grade
graduates are attending Archdiocesan,
charter, independent or selective public
schools.
Nationally a model for inner-city
education, Gesu provides neighborhood
families with a powerful alternative,
offering opportunities otherwise closed
to them. Gesu not only nurtures
children intellectually, but spiritually
and morally as well, equipping them for
strong futures.
Philadelphia D.A. Seth Williams speaks
with Gesu’s students as part of Gesu’s 7th
and 8th Grade Speaker Series, which exposes
students to successful African Americans in a
variety of fields.
Without great leaders and passionate
donors, Gesu’s pursuit of justice in
North Philadelphia would fail. The
2009-2010 Annual Report celebrates
all those who have made our quest
possible.
Here’s to Gesu’s rich and fruitful future
and an even playing field for all children
growing up in our nation’s inner cities!
Students concentrate on
their work in Ms. Carter’s
4th grade girls class. In the
coming academic year,
three alumni, including
Ms. Carter, will teach
at Gesu School.

Leadership with Vision
Win Churchill moderates Gesu’s 12th Annual
Symposium on Transforming Inner-City
Education. The event brings policy makers,
educators, funders, and stakeholders together
to tackle the tough challenges of transforming
education for America’s low income youth and
to share what’s working in inner-city education.
“Gesu School is about justice—justice
that fuels a justifiable anger at the
obvious wrongs we see around our
cities, and elsewhere in society.” Such
was the vision of Winston J. Churchill,
co-founder and first chairman of the
Board of Trustees of Gesu School
during the school’s 1993 reincarnation
as an independent, Catholic
elementary school.
Win’s vision and leadership, along with
that of Rev. George Bur, SJ, Sr. Ellen
Convey, IHM and their respective
religious orders, ignited the passion of
countless individuals, businesses, and
foundations to rescue and sustain a
Catholic school slated for closure.
This passion resulted in the
establishment of an accomplished,
ecumenical, diverse board, a board
powerful enough to raise sufficient
funds over four campaigns to sustain
Gesu and ensure its future. Thanks to
these tremendous efforts, hundreds of
students have graduated from Gesu
School, poised to succeed in life—and
hundreds more will graduate in future
years.
The statistics speak for themselves.
More than 90% of Gesu’s graduates
have completed high school in four
years, well above the city’s on-time

Bur SJ, and founding board chairman,

graduation rate of 50%. Over sixty
percent of Gesu’s high school graduates
continue on to college. These students
enter many professions, but some will
always return to help the children who
come after them. (See page 6.)
In May, J. Gordon Cooney, Jr., a
loyal Gesu supporter since the early
years and former co-vice chairman
of the Board, assumed the role of
board chairman. Following nearly 20
years of leadership, Win Churchill
has assumed the role of co-vice
chairman of the Board of Trustees,
alongside steadfast Gesu advocate Bob
McAlaine. Together, Win, Gordon, and
Bob’s leadership provides a seamless
backdrop for Gesu’s continued legacy
of transformation. From a struggling
parochial school in 1992, Gesu has
emerged strong and poised to take on
all challenges the future will
certainly pose.
Thank you, Win, for never giving
up your belief in justice and an even
playing field for the children of North
Philadelphia! Thank you Gordon, Bob,
and all of Gesu’s fearless leaders for
carrying the banner forward!

Successful Early Education
How do you teach little children to
count to 100? Ask them to bring in
100 of whatever they want—pennies,
M&M’s, you name it! What about
the concept that the letters Q and
U always appear together in words?
Hold a wedding celebration for Miss
Q and Mr. U, complete with cake and
dancing, of course!
Learning is anything but rote and
boring in Kathy Asta’s Kindergarten
class in Gesu School’s Lenfest Early
Childhood Center. Research has shown
that a quality early education is critical
to a child’s success later in life. Gesu’s
pre-K and Kindergarten programs
give North Philadelphia’s children the
boost they deserve to reach their full
potentials.
named this year’s Knetzger Teaching
Prize winner. The Knetzger Teaching
Prize, endowed by a gift from Jay and
Kathy Sherrerd in memory of Gesu
trustee Edwin Knetzger, is presented
annually to that faculty member
demonstrating the highest quality of
teaching ability and commitment.
A nomination from a fellow teacher
noted that Ms. Asta not only, “teaches
letter sounds and reading skills to
bring up standardized scores, but
also to build strong and inquisitive
life-long learners.” The skills that
Gesu’s early learners build in pre-K
and Kindergarten empower them to
break the cycle of poverty and violence
later in life as they continue their
educations.
In a testament to the quality of her
early childhood program, Ms. Asta was

generous three-year grant from the
Hagan Foundation, this year’s summer
component expanded to include four
teachers. The program will continue
to challenge students throughout the
academic year.
Youngest Scholars was born of Dr.
DiIulio’s research dispelling the myth
that very smart low-income children
can make it on their own. In fact, the
research revealed that low-income
children of high academic ability lost
ground throughout elementary school
and had poorer long-term outcomes
than their higher-income peers. The
Youngest Scholars Program, it is hoped,
will help turn that tide over time.

The Call to Service:
Outcomes of a Faith-Based Education
Blazing the Way with ACE*SJU
Gesu alumni account for three of the
fifteen recent college grads blazing
the way in a new program that serves
inner-city students in Philadelphia.
Saint Joseph’s University and the
University of Pennsylvania launched
the program, known as ACE*SJU, this
summer. Modeled after Notre Dame’s
successful ACE (Alliance for Catholic
Education) program, ACE*SJU is
designed to train and cultivate teachers
for Catholic schools that serve a lowincome population. Candidates will
earn their master’s degrees in education
over the next two years while teaching
at Catholic schools in Philadelphia,
including Gesu.
Gesu grads selected for ACE*SJU
include Leya Egea-Hinton (Saint
Joseph’s University, sociology), Desmond
Shannon (Saint Joseph’s University,
actuarial science) and Shakeeta Parker
(Ursinus College, dance and African
studies).
What would motivate a recent college
grad to enter such a service-oriented
field? “I want to be able to help people
the way I was helped when I was
younger,” explains Leya Egea-Hinton
’02, who is teaching 2nd grade at Gesu
School. Leya, who attended high
school at Shipley, believes Gesu played
a critical role in putting her on the
path that landed her in ACE*SJU. “If
it weren’t for Gesu, I wouldn’t be here,”
she explains.
Since starting her practicum in the
public summer schools, Leya has fallen
in love with teaching, especially the
challenge of thinking on her feet and
being creative. She was thrilled to get
into her classroom in September.
Desmond Shannon ’02 works with student

Alongside the three Gesu alumni
in ACE*SJU, alumna Catera Rivers
(Spelman College, psychology & Spanish)
will spend the next two years teaching
at Mastery Charter School through the
highly competitive Teach for America
program (TFA).

As Catera and other corps members
went through “boot camp” in North
Philadelphia, she told a fellow
member, “This is my home. This is

her colleague’s question about what
Catera can be assured that she has
made the Gesu community proud
of her return on their investment.

Pierre Toussaint Society
$50,000 & Above
Gesu recognizes contributions at
the $50,000 level and above with
membership in the Pierre Toussaint Society. Born into slavery
in Haiti in the early 19th century,
Venerable Pierre Toussaint was
brought to New York City, where
he became a successful hair
dresser. He used his earnings to
free many slaves and finally himself. Thereafter, he performed
many acts of charity including the
establishment of an orphanage
and a school for black children.
When most fled the City during a
yellow fever epidemic, he stayed
to nurse the sick. His dedication
to the well-being and education of
the poor makes Pierre Toussaint
a fitting patron for Gesu and our
donors.

The Mission:
Inspired by the Jesuit and IHM traditions
of social justice, faith, hope, and love,
Gesu School strives, without selective
admissions, to provide a quality,
innovative education for its neighbor
children to empower them to break the
cycle of poverty and violence.
The Results:
In a neighborhood where only 34% of
adults over 25 hold a high school diploma,
over 90% of Gesu alumni graduate from
high school in four years, going on lead to
productive lives.
The 2010 Gala Believe! raised over
$200,000 in scholarships for Gesu students.
Celebrating the evening are Gala co-chair
Kay O’Grady, Rosalee DiIulio and her
husband and Gesu Spirit Medal honoree
Dr. John DiIulio, co-chair Cathy Peacock,
and President & CEO Christine Beck.
