10th July 2015 Dear Barrow Hill, A very big thank you to all the families who came to our Summer Open Evening. This event was held for the first time last year and I think this year’s was even better! I am very proud of the children’s work this year – and how well presented it is becoming. It was interesting seeing the pieces of work the children had chosen themselves – and reading their reasons why! A big thank you to FOBH for delicious BBQ, it was certainly very popular! I’d like to say a special well done to the Orchestra and the Choir, both performances were of an extremely high standard and a great way to finish a lovely evening together. Ps did you see your free copy of ‘The Bridgeman’? Additional copies are available for £3.00 (this is how much each copy costs us) and any monies raised goes towards Ross’s Newspaper Group for next year. Available from the newest News Agent in St John’s Wood (AKA Audrey). Pizza Action! On Friday, all year 5 made their own individual pizzas from scratch! Each group made their own dough which was left to rise in a warming cupboard, before being kneaded and rolled into shape. Then the children added toppings: passata, mozzarella, and a variety of vegetables and/or meats. In the afternoon, year 5 learnt about the history of pizza before enjoying the fruits of their labours in a pizza picnic! We would like to offer our thanks to Tesco St John’s Wood for providing all the main ingredients for the day. Tuesday 14th July 11am The Barrow Hill Games: This year’s Sports Day takes place at Paddington Rec with a running track and toilet facilities in situ: supporters welcome! We will be taking packed lunches so we can get the most out of our day at track. Please come along and cheer on the school Sports Houses! Who will be our Sports Personalities of 2015? Wednesday 15th July Year 6 Leaver’s Party: The Class of 2015 will be celebrated with Memory Wall, class photographs, food and music. They have been a great year group! Friday 17th July 11am: Leaver’s Assembly (parents welcome) (last day of term) A final opportunity to celebrate and thank our Year 6 Barrow Hill Graduates who make up the Class of 2015 School Closes at 2pm on Friday 17th July Secondary Scientists! After a science visit from teachers and students from St Marylebone CE School, we paid them a return visit to experience what secondary science was really like. When we arrived there, we were greeted by Dr Jane Fletcher and Svenique Eriksen. There, we chose our seats, and were given a sheet to interpret which chemistry equipment matched each label. Then, we started our first investigation - who illegally set off fireworks? We had to choose between Sheldon, Guy Fawkes or Harry Styles. Next, we were given a brief presentation to introduce our suspects. For this investigation, we used our Bunsen burner to set safety (yellow) and blue flames. In case you didn’t already know, a Bunsen burner is basically a device, used to easily create a flame. If we turned a small dial it would turn the formerly orange flame, blue, and much hotter. In our mission to find the culprit, we used small tubes of liquidized metals in which a wire loop was dipped. The metals included: Lithium, Copper, Calcium, Chromium, Nickel, Lead and Iron (III). The soaked loop was embraced by the blue flame, causing a change of colour in the fire. This brings us to the next step- The Flame Tests… In this, we soaked our wire loop in each metal solution, one at a time. We then changed our flame to blue and put the loop in midst of the fire. Once that was done, we recorded our results in a table given to us. We had two tests, to make sure we had the correct colour written down. We then all sat down and discussed our results to Dr. Fletcher and the class. After that, we had three special tubes; these had labels on them from A, B and C. We used the same technique to find out which colour those three tubes were. Once everybody was finished, the class came to a vote decided by the majority; in this case it was suspect two, Sheldon. Onto Test 2; this is where we mixed each of the previous metals with a solution called Sodium Hydroxide. This resulted in making a new colour and powdery substance. Again, we noted down these results in another table of ours. Our classmates and us decided that suspect number two was our culprit. We were shown several more demonstrations and ended our secondary school experience with a deafening hydrogen-balloon explosion. All in all, we had a fun day and are all looking forward to secondary school science lessons!
