3 MILLION die each year from
breathing harmful cooking smoke
inside their homes.
IMPROVED clean cookstoves
eliminate life-threatening soot
and other toxic pollutants.
SURYA CREATES A NEW MARKET MECHANISM IN 4,000 HOMES
• Our approach integrates natural and social sciences with cuttingedge wireless sensors to address a century old scientific/societal
problem of access to clean cooking technology for three billion
people still depending on 18th century technologies.
• The sensor-enabled ‘smart stoves’ enable a climate financing
mechanism to reward each rural woman directly with payments for
mitigating reductions in CO2 and black carbon emissions, thus
removing a major barrier for access to clean technologies.
• The aggregation of the sensor data opens new doors for
understanding behavioral patterns on massive scales without using
tedious and unreliable surveys.
• Surya has rapidly iterated and improved this model since 2009.
THE TIME IS NOW:
IMPROVED COOKSTOVES MAKE UP $25-50 BILLION MARKET*

BUT THE MARKET FACES A KNOWLEDGE GAP…
…Are these interventions
achieving the intended results?
WE CAN CLOSE THE GAP WITH WIRELESS SENSORS
StoveTrace is Nexleaf Analytics’ award-winning platform for wireless,
real-time monitoring of cookstove usage. StoveTrace combines robust
wireless sensors with powerful cloud-based analytics to facilitate data-driven
decision making and responsive interventions.
WITH OVER 1 YEAR OF MONITORING IN HUNDREDS OF HOMES

• Each column is

• StoveTrace has
collected over 2
million hours of
data logged from
29 villages
STOVETRACE CAN ENABLE LEARNING FOR IMPACT
Finding
• High Stove Users (> 2 hours/day)
sustained high usage over time.
• However, only 13% of households fell
into this category in the original
sample (Cohort 1).
More high users in Cohort 2
than in Cohort 1
Action
Impact
• StoveTrace allowed distributors to
target high user communities in a
subsequent effort (Cohort 2).
• As a result, the number of high users
in Cohort 2 was double the number
in Cohort 1.
STOVETRACE CAN IMPROVE POST-SALES SUPPORT
“Most rural villagers do not have the concept of requesting support, so they will
either try fixing the stove themselves, which is not sustainable because it will keep
breaking, or they will give up and return to their life-threatening stove.”

STOVETRACE CAN OFFSET THE COST OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES
WITH RESULTS-BASED FINANCING
The Climate Credit Pilot Project (C2P2) aims to increase affordability and
adoption of the cleanest cookstoves through rewarding the end users directly
with climate credit payments.
AS OF JANUARY 2016:
•
3,865 households enrolled
with loans from rural banks
owned by Gov’t of India
•
Action: StoveTrace allowed
households in 29 villages in
Odisha, India to receive
direct payments
•
Women are earning
$6/ton CO2eq, which can
add up to $32/year
*
*Climate Fund = Carbon Credits for CO2 + Black Carbon
ENABLING NEW CLIMATE MARKET MECHANISMS
Project Surya partners with Gold Standard Foundation to develop a new
methodology for Black Carbon
•
Climate credits that include
both CO2 and Black Carbon
can offset the cost of the
new technologies in less
than two years
•
Using EPA’s social cost of
carbon of $40/ton, each
woman can earn up to USD
$212/year

WE LEVERAGE MOBILE BANKING TO PAY WOMEN DIRECTLY
Mpesa has proved successful in Kenya for providing financial inclusion to the
population at large. By connecting StoveTrace with mobile money, women can
receive their results-based financing more immediately.

OUR SENSORS CAN IDENTIFY AND SCALE THE BEST
STOVES TO THE POOREST 3 BILLION…
BIOMASS AND CHARCOAL COOKSTOVES
MARTIN, HOLLINGSWORTH AND RAMANATHAN, 2014
Action: With C2P2, women are now
beginning to demand better performing
stoves that will work.
OUR PATH TO SCALE
PHASE 1: Technology and Program Innovation
• 2014 to Q1, 2016; almost complete
• 5000 households with 500 households instrumented with StoveTrace sensors;
piloting mobile payments in a small number of homes.
PHASE 2: Program Scale
• Q2, 2016-2018
• 10k households with low-cost StoveTrace sensors; mobile payments to all homes.
PHASE 3: Program Replication
• Q4, 2016-onwards
• 1 million households connected to a carbon market; automated mobile payments
based on sensor data.
SURYA VISION:
CREATING A BLACK CARBON HOLE AND
EMPOWERING WOMEN WITH CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES.
WITH YOUR SUPPORT, SURYA IS READY TO
SCALE UP TO ONE MILLION COOKSTOVES.
