Registration begins July 19. SUMMER TRAVEL MUG – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Mon. 7:00-8:00 pm June 26 Tweens and teens will design and embellish insulated metal travel mugs. Each participant will complete one mug. CHEESECAKE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE PARFAIT – Registration begins June 14. ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Sun. 7:00-8:00 pm NACHO DIP CUPS – Aug. 6 ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Tweens and teens will make two delicious parfaits using fresh Thurs. 7:00-8:00 pm strawberries. June 29 Registration begins July 25. Tweens and teens will learn how to make fresh salsa and they will use it along with guacamole, cheese, and beans to create a multilayer dip. INKED CUFF – Tortilla chips will accompany this delicious dish. ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Registration begins June 19. Wed. 7:00-8:00 pm MATH CIRCLE – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Sun 4:00-5:15 pm July 9 Aug. 6 This math enrichment program will provide motivated students with extra-curricular math opportunities. Participants will prepare for the American Math Competition (AMC 8 and AMC 10) as well as other math contests. The group will be led by a mathematics professor and upper level high school volunteers. (The math problems covered in this class are considerably harder than typical school level problems. This program is for students who are not challenged in school math classes.) * Registration begins June 22 for the July session. BOOK TRAILERS – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Tues. 7:00-8:00 pm July 11 Tweens and teens will get to use movie maker to create a trailer for their favorite book. They will be importing pictures, music, and text. We ask that tweens and teens come with two to three books in mind that they have read and remember. Registration begins June 27. Aug. 9 Tweens and teens will learn how to ink a metal cuff bracelet and embellish it with wire and beads. Registration begins Aug. 2. LOCKER MIRROR – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Sun. 7:00-8:00 pm Aug. 13 Tweens and teens will design and embellish fun locker mirrors. Each participant will leave with one mirror. Registration begins Aug. 3. GOLF CUPCAKES – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Wed. 7:00-8:00 pm Aug. 23 Tweens and teens will decorate three cupcakes in a golf theme. Registration begins Aug. 16. HOOP LOCKER ORGANIZER – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Mon. 7:00-8:00 pm Aug. 28 Tweens and teens will create a unique denim locker organizer. Registration begins Aug. 18. This year's theme is “BUILD A BETTER OLD FASHIONED ICE CREAM SANDWICHES – WORLD”. ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Sun. 7:00-8:00 pm July 23 Tweens and teens will enjoy homemade ice cream sandwiches using freshly made waffles. A demonstration on how to make ice cream will also take place. Registration begins July 12. 11 COLLEGE INFORMATION CLASSES PSAT/SAT TEST PREPARATION COURSE – GRADES 10 THROUGH 12 Mon. 6:45-8:45 pm Sept. 25 Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 (Oct. 9 will be held in the auditorium) This test preparation course is taught by state certified teachers and subject specialists. Students are asked to purchase McGraw Hill's SAT, 2018 Edition (ISBN: 978-1260010381) prior to the first session. In addition a notebook, pen or pencil, and a calculator will be needed at each session. A non-refundable check for $85.00, made payable to Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, will be required at the time of registration. Registration for POB residents begins Thursday, September 7, 2017 at the Information Desk. Registration is open to others, space permitting, starting Thursday, September 14. The library reserves the right to cancel the course, if there are fewer than 13 registrants. TEEN COMMUNITY SERVICE In each edition of Library World we will list opportunities for teens to volunteer at the Library and earn Community Service Credit. In addition to earning “Library Dollars,” Summer Reading participants entering grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to earn one hour of community service credit for each book report/review submitted and approved during the Summer Reading Program. A maximum number of five hours of community service credit can be earned this way. BEA SHACKNOW MEMORIAL GARDEN – ENTERING GRADES 7 THROUGH 12 The garden will be tended by a dedicated group of teen volunteers. The vegetables and herbs that are harvested will be donated to local food pantries. Applications can be picked up in Family Center beginning Monday, May 1. This year our garden group will meet on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00-11:00 am beginning Saturday, July 1. Community service credit will be awarded. “ADOPT ME” PET BANDANAS – ENTERING GRADES 5 THROUGH 12 Mon. 7:00-8:00 pm Aug. 21 Tweens and teens will paint special messages onto bandanas using fabric paint, markers, and stencils. Shelter Pets will then wear the bandanas to adoption events. One hour community service credit will be awarded for this program. Registration begins Aug. 14. TECHIE BUDDIES This summer we will need teen volunteers from grades 9-12 to help with our technology programs. This will involve helping younger children during a variety of different technology programs throughout the months of June, July, August and September. Teen volunteers will need to register for each program they are interested in helping with. Two hours of community service credit will be awarded for each program. A birth certificate or passport will be required for proof of age. Registration for all programs is age specific. • Preference is given to Plainview-Old Bethpage School District residents. • POB Library Card numbers are required at the time of registration. If you register for someone other than your child, you must have that person’s card number as well. • All programs begin on time. After 10 minutes NO ONE WILL BE ADMITTED. • *See DATES AT A GLANCE for program registration dates. • An accompanying adult must remain in the Library while the child is attending the program. For safety reasons, we cannot leave the program to escort your child to the restroom. • THE 3 STRIKE RULE: Please call 938-0077 X 237 to cancel if your child is unable to attend a Family Center program. Any family that fails to cancel two times will receive a warning letter. When this happens a third time, the family will be placed on a waiting list for any program they register for during a 3-month period.
