ATAR in the media
Unless you were on a remote desert island over the December–
January holidays, you probably noticed that the ATAR received a
lot of media attention.
Year 10 booklet
UAC’s Year 10 booklet covering university entry requirements for
2019 will once again be available in early May. The booklet lists
courses UAC’s participating institutions will offer in 2019, with
details of prerequisites, assumed knowledge, recommended
studies and additional selection criteria.
This booklet also contains information and worksheets to help
students think about their interests, aspirations and skills that will
help them decide which HSC courses to take in years 11 and 12.
Each Year 12 school in NSW and the ACT will receive four
complimentary copies of the booklet. Extra print copies can be
ordered on UAC’s website and copies can be downloaded at
www.uac.edu.au/publications/undergraduate.shtml. An
accompanying presentation will also be available on Schoolink
in May.
Scaling report
The Report on the Scaling of the 2015 NSW Higher School
Certificate will be available on UAC’s website in April. The
preliminary report is currently available at www.uac.edu.au/
publications/undergraduate/atar.shtml. Print copies of the full
and final report can be ordered (for a small fee) by filling in and
sending us the undergraduate publications order form at
www.uac.edu.au/publications.
Following are some interesting facts about the 2015 ATAR:
Many of you will know that universities have been considering
criteria other than the ATAR for Year 12 entry (especially for certain
courses) for a long time. It’s nothing new, and it doesn’t mean that
the ATAR is meaningless or about to be abandoned altogether.
 55,736 students received an ATAR
In addition to the ATAR, universities may look at a range of
other criteria, such as interviews, portfolios, performance in
specific tests, performance in Year 12 subjects, educational
disadvantage and so on. University admissions criteria can be
quite diverse, even for Year 12 students.
 16.5% of students received an ATAR of 90.00 or above
School offer lists available
However, the ATAR is, and will continue to be for the foreseeable
future, a useful measure of how a Year 12 student has performed
overall when compared to other students, and a solid base upon
which universities can make decisions about offers to them.
Student preferences and school offer lists for Semester 1
are available in Schoolink on UAC’s website. This secure site
contains details of all offers made to students at your school for
admission to tertiary study in Semester 1 in 2016.
Your advice to students should be what it has always been – to
do the best they possibly can in their chosen studies and make
the most of their last years of secondary school.
Note, students can change their preferences for later offer
rounds and these lists do not indicate whether a student
accepts an offer, or indeed which offer (if any) they accepted.
Also note that your offer list doesn’t include offers to students
who have requested that this information not be released to
their school.
UAC publications for 2016
All of UAC’s popular publications have been revised for 2016 to
give student advisers, parents and students themselves the latest
information on preparing and applying for tertiary study in 2017.
 the median ATAR was 68.70, slightly lower than in 2014
 the median ATAR for females was 70.75
 the median ATAR for males was 66.35
 62.4% of students received an ATAR of at least 60.00.
If no offer list appears for 2016, it means that no offers were
made to your students in this admissions period.

2015–16 admissions round-up
Social media
The key period between the release of ATARs in December and the Main Round
of offers in January once again triggered the annual spike in activity across UAC’s
social media channels.
UAC’s two primary channels, Facebook and Twitter, experienced healthy growth
during this peak period. Compared to the same period last year, our Facebook
audience increased by 40 per cent and queries were up 14 per cent. Twitter
activity also grew, with followers up 25 per cent and 11 per cent more queries
answered compared to last year. Videos on UAC’s YouTube channel also received
over 23,000 views.
The types of questions asked in this period remain largely the same each year,
typically relating to course vacancies, deadlines, bonus points and lost PINs. The
launch of UAC’s new app, My UAC, in December proved to be a hot topic online
as well.
We encourage you to ask your students to subscribe to our Facebook, Twitter and
YouTube services. It is also a useful resource for parents and school staff to receive
reminders about application closing dates and other important information.

Customer service
UAC’s ATAR Enquiry Centre opened on Thursday 17 December 2015 and ran until
Thursday 24 December to help students with queries relating to their ATAR. This
year we also operated a PIN hotline to fast-track students who rang to retrieve
their UAC PIN. On the first two days more than 1,710 calls were received with
around 20 per cent being pin-related.
Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS)
survey
A total of 8,791 SRS applications from 837 schools were received for
2015–16 admissions – the second year of SRS operating. This was an increase
of 61.4 per cent on the previous year. As at 20 January 2016, a total of 6,253
early offers had been made to applicants.
In February 2016, UAC surveyed the 837 schools from which SRS applications
were received in 2015. Thank you to those schools that participated
and gave us feedback to improve the scheme. For 2017 admissions we
will be continuing our program of improvements for the registration and
rating processes.
HSC subjects update
BOSTES has advised the following new course for 2016:
 Punjabi Continuers (16035).
In 2017 there will be a new examinable course – Korean Beginners. It is available
for Year 11 students in 2016.
From August 2015 to February 2016 UAC’s Customer Service team answered
around 71,500 calls and 12,500 emails. In September – in the lead up to ontime closing – we received our highest amount of enquiries with 15,443 calls
and 2,865 emails. On Thursday 17 December, the day ATARs were released,
UAC received 2,537 phone enquiries.
