Edmund. hello?
Pause
Edmund. hello?
White Witch arrives on sleigh with Ginarrbrik. Ginarrbrik slowly puts a knife up to
Edmund’s throat. Edmund yelps.
Edmund. please don’t hurt me
White Witch. what is it now Ginarrbrik?
Gin. I’m not sure, your majesty. If it’s a dwarf, it’s an ugly one!
White Witch presents herself.
Edmund. wow. You are so tall and… and…
Gin. is that any way to address the queen?
Edmund. oh, oh. I’m sorry! I didn’t know… your majesty.
Gin. you don’t know the queen of Narnia? Nonsense.
White Witch. Ginnarbrik. That’s not how we treat our guests.
White Witch spends a long time staring at Edmund.
White Witch. what is your name, son of Adam?
Edmund. er… er… Edmund.
White Witch. Edmund dear, you look so cold. And those are hardly clothes for this
kind of weather. Why don’t you come and join me?
Edmund. no, it’s ok…
White Witch. that wasn’t a question
Edmund. oh. Ok.
1
White Witch. perhaps you’d like something hot to drink, Edmund?
Edmund. yes please, your majesty
Gin. your drink. Sir.
White Witch. it’s dull to drink without eating. What would you like to eat, son of
Adam?
Edmund. can you make anything?
White Witch. yes. I can make anything that you can imagine. And some things you
probably can’t.
Edmund. well I do like Turkish delight
White Witch. excellent choice.
Turkish delight – flying/hypnosis
White Witch. Edmund, how did you come to enter my dominions?
Edmund. I don’t know, I was just following my sister and…
White Witch. /there are more of you?
Edmund. four. Me. Peter. Susan and Lucy.
White Witch. four?
Edmund. Lucy came first. She said that she had dinner with a faun!
White Witch. I would very much like to meet your brothers and sisters.
Edmund. why? They’re nothing special.
White Witch. Edmund, I don’t have any children of my own. And one day, if you
wish, you could become prince, or even king of Narnia.
Edmund. what? Me?
White Witch. yes. And a king needs servants.
Edmund. peter can be my butler!
White Witch. what a wonderful idea. Now go and get your brother and sisters and
bring them to my castle.
White Witch. (to gin) make sure you get that faun.
Mr. Beaver. Quick, follow me. We are not safe here.
2
Lucy.
What do you mean?
Mr. Beaver. Many of the forest creatures are our friends, but some are on her side,
if you know what I mean. Come, let us go.
Mr. Beaver. Now we must get you safely to our king.
Susan. Your king?
Mr. Beaver. Aslan!
Lucy. Aslan.
Peter.
the very name makes me feel brave and adventurous.
Mr Beaver. come on then, we’ve got no time to waste
(They leave the woods and Edmund runs the other way)
Mrs. Beaver. How very honoured we are to have the children of the prophesy.
Susan. What do you mean-"children of the prophesy"?
Lucy.
What exactly is the prophesy, Mr. Beaver?
Mr. Beaver. It is told in the form of a rhyme. “wrong will be right when Aslan
comes in sight. At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more. When he bears
his teeth, winter will meet its death. And when he shakes his mane, we shall have
spring again.”
Lucy. Who is Aslan, a man?
Mrs. Beaver. Certainly not. He is king of the wood and son of the great emperor
beyond the sea. Aslan is a lion-the great lion. And we have heard that he may be in
Narnia even as we speak. If it is true, we will take you to the stone table early in the
morning so that you may meet him.
Peter.
but-how do we fit into all this?
Susan. We still don't understand about the prophecy.
Mr. Beaver. But you will. Listen to the rest of the rhyme- "when Adam’s flesh and
Adam’s bone, sits at cair paravel in throne, the evil time will be over and done."
Susan. What’s cair paravel?
Mrs Beaver. The castle in Narnia where the kings and queens rule
Lucy. What does that mean- "Adam’s flesh and Adam’s bone"?
Mr. Beaver. It means humans.
Peter. how many thrones are there?
Mr. Beaver. Four. Two for the sons of AdamMrs. Beaver. - And two for the daughters of eve.
3
Mr. Beaver. but where is the other son of Adam?
Peter. he’s just…
Lucy. Edmund? Edmund!
Susan. So we must find Edmund, otherwise we cannot fulfil the prophecy.
Mr. Beaver. and when they are filled, it will mean the end of the Witch's reign- and
her life.
Lucy. Mr Tumnus warned me of the Witch
Mr. Beaver. You mustn't go near the Witch.
Mrs. Beaver. She would turn you all to stone with her magic wand.
(Torture scene with Mr Tumnus.)
White Witch. Tumnus. Tell me what you did today?
Tumnus. well I woke up and made some tea, and then did a little reading and went
for a walk
White Witch. did you see anyone on your walk?
Tumnus. ummm… not that I recall
White Witch. no? Not any daughters of eve?
Tumnus. no
White Witch. any sons of Adam?
Tumnus. no
White Witch. you wouldn’t lie to me, Tumnus, would you?
Tumnus. of course not, your majesty
White Witch. because the thing is, I did meet a son of Adam today
Pause
White Witch. and he told me that his sister Lucy had already visited Narnia
Pause
White Witch. Lucy. Lucy. Lucy. Does that ring a bell?
Tumnus. no
White Witch. really? Because he said that his sister Lucy had tea with a
Fawn!
4
Tumnus. it wasn’t, I didn’t, pleaseWhite Witch. liar. Shall I add you to my collection?!
Tumnus. no please, I beg of/
Tumnus is still and the White Witch moulds Tumnus into a stone statue.
(Edmund enters the castle)
Maugrim. be still stranger, or you ‘ll never move again.
Maugrim approaches Edmund
Maugrim. who are you?
Edmund. I’m Edmund. I met the queen in the woods and she told me to come here.
I’m a son of Adam.
Maugrim. oh, my apologies, fortunate favourite of the queen. Or perhaps not so
fortunate. Do follow me.
Edmund enters the castle and sees a beautiful throne.
White Witch. like it?
Edmund. very much so
White Witch. then it could be yours.
White Witch looks around
White Witch. tell me Edmund, are your sisters deaf?
Edmund. no
White Witch. is your brother unintelligent?
Edmund. no
White Witch. then how dare you come alone?!
Edmund. they never listen to me. They went with the beavers.
White Witch. Maugrim! Ginnarrbrik! You know what to do.
Spring starts to come – movement - Aslan
Aslan. Welcome, peter, son of Adam. Welcome, Susan and Lucy, daughters of eve.
Welcome he-beaver and she-beaver. But... Where is the other son of Adam?
Edmund. please. Can we stop now?
5
White Witch. shut up!
Edmund. but my legs are tired
Maugrim. well, well, well so the great Aslan has returned. My queen will be
interested in this news. But first – why don’t you test my strength?
Fight and then Peter stabs Maugrim
White Witch. Maugrim?! Who has done this to you?
Maugrim. the other son of Adam
White Witch screams and pulls Edmund from off of the floor
Edmund. please, what are you going to do to me?
White Witch. exactly what your brother did to my captain!
Movement and music
White Witch. have you forgotten the deep magic?
Aslan. tell me of it
White Witch. tell you? Tell you what is written on that very table of stone which
stands beside us? You know the ~magic which the emperor put into Narnia at the
beginning of time. You know that every traitor belongs to me- and that for every
treachery, I have a right to kill. And he is a traitor!
Lucy. Aslan is this true.
Aslan. I’m afraid it is. Peace! I have a proposition for you though.
Aslan and the white Witch discuss
Aslan. the matter has been settled. The Witch has renounced the claim on your
brother's blood. Edmund is free.
White Witch. The fool is here! Bind him fast. Let him be shaved!
Gin. Look. Why, he's only a great big cat, after all.
Maugrim. Is that what we were afraid of?
Both. Pussy-cat, pussy-cat. Hello, stupid pussy-cat. How many mice have you
caught today? Would you like a saucer of milk? (Etc.) .
Lucy (whispering to Susan). How can they?
Susan (whispering) . The brutes.
Witch. Muzzle him!
6
Lucy (whispering). Why doesn't he bite off their hands?
Susan (whispering). He would never betray the deep magic.
Lucy (whispering). The cowards. They know he could kill them all-but he will not.
White Witch. Now who has won, you fool? Did you think by sacrificing yourself
you would save the human traitor? Not only will I kill you in his place as we agreed,
but I will come back and kill the boy as well.
Aslan roars up and there is a big battle.
Creation of Narnia – Edmund wakes up.
Edmund. hello?
End.
