Designed in 1894 by Frank Lloyd Wright for Oak Park real estate developer Henry Wallis, this
charming gatehouse was first thought to be only a remodeling of an earlier dwelling. The home,
with its steeply pitched roof and half-timber gables, is also reminiscent of two of Wright’s Oak Park
houses. Wallis’ lakefront complex “Wallisia” was reflected on the gatehouse sign.

Shibumi
Penwern, or Great House, was designed for Fred B. Jones, a wealthy Chicago
businessman. The unifying characteristic of the main house, boathouse and
stables is a low-rise arch, a design element that Wright used from the beginning
of his career. Japanese influenced roofs, with rising ridgepoles and flaring eaves,
is repeated on each of these buildings. The use of field stone boulders suggests
the country nature of this lakeside summer house. In contrast, the estate’s charming
Gatehouse has a horizontal roofline, and fieldstone is used to a much larger
extent. The Jones Boathouse, destroyed in an arson fire in 1978, was meticulously
restored in 2005 to Wright’s original design. The Fred B. Jones Estate is a
spectacular example of pristine restoration.

Japanese for effortless perfection and tranquility, ‘Shibumi’ by architect Ken Dahlin, is a fusion of
Japanese, Prairie and Arts and Crafts principles. The Greene & Greene signature motif ‘Cloud
Lift’ is the unifying design throughout. Interior elements include Japanese Kaidan step cases and
Shoji doors, and the use of natural materials, evoke a sense of warmth and peacefulness.

1894
Charles Stevens enlisted Chicago architect Robert Spencer to design the caretaker’s housing on his Wisconsin
summer estate. Spencer, an early protagonist of Frank Lloyd Wright, included signature Prairie elements into
his design. The low-pitched roof with broad overhanging eaves and diamond pane windows is a blend of
simple masses and rectangular details that evoke a play of light and shadow.
Charles A. Stevens Estate – All-Steel Home
When the family’s original home was demolished after the death of his parents, son Elmer Stevens built
an early pre-fabricated All-Steel home on the property. A design he first admired at the 1933 Chicago
World’s Fair, the walls are composed of vertical units, faced with painted steel on the exterior, while the
interior shows honesty of expression and restful simplicity of this house moderne.
Architect - Brian A. Spencer
After purchasing a por tion of the Fred B. Jones site, a real estate developer
from Massachusetts commissioned architect Brian Spencer to design a Prairie style
house that would conform to the surrounding Wright structures. Designed in a
cruciform style, natural light, cross ventilation and spectacular lake views are
abundant throughout the house.

Frank Lloyd Wright presented a plan to Chicago stockbroker Charles Ross, for a
cottage on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota designed for his client Francis Little. That
plan was also the basis for the Ross summer cottage. The home’s board-and-batten
exterior, broad overhanging eaves and low hipped roof are characteristic of Wright’s
emerging Prairie style.
Architect - James Dresser
Designed by Wright apprentice and friend, James Dresser, this Roman brick and red oak Prairie
structure with its dramatic central gable entrance, pays homage to the master. An expansive
view of floor to ceiling glass, allows natural daylight to flood the interior. Two original windows
from Wright’s Lake Geneva Hotel are on permanent display in the Library’s foyer.

Lake Geneva • 10 am – 1:30 pm
Travel back to1886 when the summer camp of the Western Secretarial
Institute of the Y.M.C.A. was established on Lake Geneva. What began
as a summer training institute for aspiring leaders is now the campus
of George Williams College. Many of the campus’ Arts and Crafts buildings were designed by Emery Stanford Hall, a contemporary of Frank
Lloyd Wright.Your evening begins with a self-guided tour of the historic
grounds, followed by an old-fashioned barbeque dinner.
Begin your Sunday morning by enjoying the rich tradition of cruising on
the passenger steamer the Lady of the Lake. Your scenic boat outing
will include brunch and a narrated tour of the history of Lake Geneva
and of the grand lakeshore estates built in the late nineteenth and
early twentieth century by some of Chicago’s elite. Passengers will
then disembark for a guided tour of the house and gardens of Black
Point Estate, the palatial summer home built in 1888 for Chicago beer
tycoon, Conrad Seipp. Take a step back in time and become a part of
the history that is Lake Geneva.
An Evening under the Stars
As dusk approaches, we will travel to adjoining Yerkes Observatory.
Built in 1896 by Henry Ives Cobb, this ornate brick-and-terra cotta
Beaux Ar t style observatory houses the world’s largest refracting
telescope. Guided tours of Yerkes, and a silent auction in the Library,
will take place. After dark, telescopes will be available on the lawn for
