Name: ______________________________ Period: __________ Team: ______________________________ Assignment Date: 9/04/13 Due Date: 9/08/13 EOC Density I: Is Density Intensive? Background: An intensive (sometimes called intrinsic) property of matter is a property that is independent of the amount of material present. Properties that do not change when you have more or less of the substance are intrinsic properties. Mass is NOT an intensive property – since the more substance you have the more mass you have. Boiling point IS, since the boiling point of water is 100°C - it does not matter how much water you have, when it reached 100°C, it boils. What about density? Density is the ratio of an object's mass to its volume - density is the relationship between how heavy something is for its size. Therefore, something that is small and has a high mass has a high density. Objectives: Year-Long Target 1: Develop Safe and Appropriate lab Practices Year-Long Target 2: Collect Data with Accuracy and Precision Year-Long Target 3: Write Valid Conclusions using Collected/provided Data Year-Long Target 4: Develop Problem Solving Skills in The Lab Setting POM Target 3.2: Determine If Density is An Intrinsic (Intensive) Property of Matter Materials: Triple Beam Balance 100mL Graduated Cylinder Calculator Graph Paper Procedure: 1. Choose 4 different sized samples of the same color cylinder a. Choose samples that have different masses and volumes 2. Measure and record the mass and volume 3. Calculate and record the density 4. Graph your data (mass on the y-axis and volume on the x-axis) Data Table 1: Density of Solid Samples Sig Figs! Units!
