SPECIA L FUN W ALK ED ITION Connections Stayingconnected connected with Staying withour oursupporters supporters WinterSpring 2014 2015 Fun Walk – a great fundrasing day out for all the family... and the dog too! Come celebrate 25 years of Fun Walk with us! Who? Every two years thousands of people of all ages and fitness levels get together with families, friends and colleagues for the Fun Walk, our biggest, brightest and best supported community event. What? Whether you want to get seriously into your stride or enjoy a gentle Sunday stroll there is a Fun Walk for you… and your dog! Choose between 3, 5, 8 and 11 miles, starting and finishing at Keston Common with picturesque countryside and entertainment all the way. Why? Raise funds for St Christopher’s Anniversary Centre in Sydenham and Caritas Centre in Orpington so we can continue to provide expert care to patients and families to help them to manage the challenges of a life-shortening illness and live well. How did it all start? We have Langley Park Rotary Club to thank for this amazing event. David Stoneham came up with the idea of a fundraising walk but when St Christopher’s suggested they might raise £7,000 for an ambulance his response was “Well, I don’t think so!” thinking it an impossible target. Never underestimate what can be achieved by the Rotary Club. On 5 May 1990 (the day of the first walk) 423 walkers raised an incredible £29,000! Langley Park Rotary Club are still involved today and members run several marshal points with their families. “I thank you in particular for being the inspiration behind the walk, and for the tremendous amount of thought and coordination you and your team put into organising an event on this scale” Extract from our founder the late Dame Cicely Saunder’s 1990 thank you letter to David Stoneham, Langley Park Rotary Club A message from our Joint Chief Executives The biennial St Christopher’s Fun Walk is an exceptional event made possible by the support of our community – individuals, clubs, groups, schools and companies. It has grown steadily since Langley Park Rotary Club got it off the ground in 1990 and this year is our opportunity to celebrate 25 years and pay tribute to the amazing achievements of our supporters. A remarkable £1.8 million has been raised in total. This phenomenal sum has enabled St Christopher’s to provide expert care to many dying people, and support for those close to them. We hope you will join us this year and help us make that total £2 million! Heather Richardson and Shaun O’Leary Remember – St Christopher’s services cost £18 million annually and we need to fundraise around £12 million each year Can’t make the Fun Walk? The negative side of my life doesn’t exist, and because of what I’ve received here I can cope with it” St Christopher’s service user “I’m not using a wheelchair now, I’m using a stick, which I didn’t have the confidence to do before. I’ve come on leaps and bounds” St Christopher’s service user “I love the social feeling, that there are people round you, the feeling that you are very welcome. I made myself come and it was worth the effort!” St Christopher’s service user “Thank you for giving me time and space to talk and to reflect. Our meetings have helped a lot. Your sensitive and sensible approach was just what I needed” St Christopher’s service user “I especially want to thank my social worker for helping me over a tricky threshold into a calmer place” St Christopher’s service user “Just wanted to say thank you very much for organising the hospital travel grants and for helping with the Blue Badge and Personal Independence paperwork. Register free now at www.stchristophers.org.uk/funwalk or use the Fun Walk entry form that you can find on page six Why IT manager Simon Finch was first in line to register for the 2015 Fun Walk If you can’t take part in the Fun Walk, you could sponsor him by visiting www. stchristophers.org.uk/sponsorsimon When the Princess Royal University Hospital told Simon and his family his mum had just a few days to live, they didn’t know which way to turn. Fortunately a friend, and former nurse, suggested they get in touch with St Christopher’s. “Mum wanted to go home to the little cottage in Bromley Common where they lived… St Christopher’s nurses came to the cottage the next day Sheila Wall and did everything for us; giving practical advice about home care, managing pain relief, and helping us with the emotional side of things too. Anything we wanted to ask, they were always there or available on the phone 24 hours a day. They were truly compassionate and caring, and gave us someone to lean on. Without them, we’d have been so lost.” “You never think you’re going to need an organisation like St Christopher’s but when you do they are there for you, full of understanding and a complete lifeline for you and your family. That’s why I’m doing the Fun Walk; every single pound I raise will help other people out there, like it did my family.” Simon will be walking in memory of his mother, Sheila Wall from Bromley. Richard was blown away by the work of the hospice and is now doing the Fun Walk Richard Park got to know St Christopher’s through the annual Goldsmiths’ Hall charity dinner. Visiting the hospice inspired him to do the Fun Walk and ask his network of friends and business colleagues to contribute a little to an amazingly ambitious fundraising target. “I have never done anything like this before, in terms of just randomly asking for money, but I was blown away by the hospice and the people who are so passionately involved.” You can read Richard’s story and give him your support at www.justgiving.com/ Richard-Park1 Richard Park an d family Follow us at www.stchristophers.org.uk/socialmedia and help tweet the word using #funwalk15 There are more ways to help the Fun Walk than just walking We need help in all kinds of volunteer roles including marshals (dressing up and entertaining walkers is encouraged), administration, refreshments, parking, park and ride, t-shirt and water collection, bouncy castle, entertainment, setting up and signage to name just a few. Call Rebecca on 020 8768 4570 or email her at [email protected] to find out more. Please also promote and spread the word about the Fun Walk in any way you can and encourage your network of friends, colleagues and family members to sign up – share www.stchristophers.org.uk/funwalk with all your social media contacts! How your fundraising will make a real difference to local people in our care David Arnold (left), pictured with one of his son-in-laws and two grandchildren Following St Christopher’s supportive care, cancer patient David is signing up too In December 2012 David Arnold (71) was given a year to live, but following cancer treatment at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and supportive care at St Christopher’s Anniversary Centre in Sydenham he’s much stronger. Now he’s signing up for St Christopher’s Fun Walk, something he didn’t think would be possible a year ago. David and his whole family are an inspiration. His two daughters, sons in law and five grandchildren will be taking part in the Fun Walk, and so will their two dogs. His wife, Kay, is excused as she is recovering from a foot operation but she’s promised to cheer everyone on from the pub! David’s daughters are runners and are likely to go for the longer route, and his son in law is planning to do the Cycle for Life in July, as well as the Fun Walk. David soon realised that by helping him to manage his pain and regain strength St Christopher’s could enable him to live life more fully. “The whole thing feels like a miracle really. It was a fantastic help physically as well as mentally.” Initially St Christopher’s physiotherapist got David doing exercises sitting down and stretches. Then they progressed to gym equipment and circuit training. “You do as much or as little as you can and there’s always someone to keep an eye on you. It’s brilliant because it’s quite a social occasion…” David has been signed off from St Christopher’s nursing care but knows we are here for him when he needs us. He’s still a regular at the Anniversary Centre Rehabilitation Gym as he’s taking part in a 12 week Fit for Life programme, designed to help people whose illness may be in remission to regain strength and confidence and get back to a more normal life. Thanks to Guy’s and St Thomas’, and St Christopher’s, David has moved from living one day at a time to feeling he can plan several months ahead. And wife Kay is very appreciative of the complementary therapy support she received from us too. If you can’t do the Fun Walk yourself, and would like to sponsor and encourage David instead, please visit www.stchristophers. org.uk/sponsordavid today to find out how. All money raised from this year’s Fun Walk will go towards St Christopher’s Anniversary Centre at the hospice in Sydenham and the Caritas Centre in Orpington. These supportive care centres provide easy access to a range of specialist services and social opportunities that aim to build confidence and physical and emotional strength, and help patients to live well while managing the challenges their illness brings. £50 will fund two sessions with a welfare officer on practicalities such as coping at work, caring for children, and managing financial, housing and legal matters. £100 will pay for a patient to see a specialist nurse for support with troubling symptoms such as pain, breathlessness and fatigue. £200 will fund 10 complementary therapy sessions bringing relief from stress and anxiety and helping to promote a good night’s sleep. £300 will buy materials for group art workshops enabling people to get absorbed in a creative activity in a supportive and understanding environment. £500 will pay for a series of physiotherapy and gentle exercise sessions to help rebuild physical strength, boost confidence and increase mobility and independence. £1,000 will enable several families to receive emotional support from a social worker because when someone is very ill many people may be affected, including children. £2,000+ will enable us to buy new equipment for our physiotherapy gym and help more people like David Arnold, whose story you can read opposite, regain their strength and live well. Sign up for the Fun Walk today and you can help make a difference too! Can’t make the Fun Walk? Just text FUNW15 £3 to 70070 and donate £3 to St Christopher’s today! 5 Make Fun Walk your family tradition too Why not take part in Fun Walk as a family and create a new family tradition? Angela Baldwin’s family first took part in the Fun Walk in 1992 in memory of her father. From right to left: brother in law, Jerry (now deceased), Angela (pregnant, holding her daughter), husband Tony, Mum’s cousin Julie, Mum, sister Sue and sister Elaine – see below for the full story. How one remarkable family has supported Fun Walk for 20+ years Our dedicated supporter Angela Baldwin, a Bromley nurse, has taken part in St Christopher’s Fun Walks for more than 20 years And her mother Dorothy Church and sister Elaine Supple have been doing the Fun Walk since 1992, that’s every walk except the first two. The tradition continues as the family, including mum who is now 74, are signing up to support St Christopher’s Fun Walk on Sunday 17 May starting from Keston Common. “Dad died in the hospice in June 1991 and they gave us massive support,” explained Angela. “I was due to sit a final nursing exam the next day and the consultant wrote a letter explaining what had happened, and the chaplain helped us as family. It meant a lot to us and the hospice has been in our minds ever since.” Angela’s husband, Tony, and two sisters take part and so do two nephews. Her own children were in the womb when they first did the walk. Later they joined in as toddlers clinging to the grown ups and now at 15 and 13 they still take part. This year Angela’s daughter is getting together her own group of friends to walk and fundraise. It is Angela’s mum, Dorothy, who is the organising force and encourages the whole family to support St Christopher’s at every opportunity. She goes to the annual Summer Fairs, Family Fun Days and Remembrance Tree services and is a regular at St Christopher’s Anniversary Centre where she listens to the community choir rehearsals on Mondays and enjoys a delicious lunch on Sundays. Angela’s memorable Fun Walk moments include walking to celebrate her Mum’s Angela Baldwin with her children keeping a tradition going 60th birthday, dressing as clowns and the time when husband Tony’s firm promised to match his fundraising if he did the walk in a Manchester United t-shirt. As a Manchester City supporter this was a painful experience, but he did it! ST CHRISTOPHER’S FUN WALK 2015 REGISTRATION FORM Why not register online instead?
