TEXT: Course Packet, Finite Mathematics for Business, by Benzaid, Gunawardena, Muthuvel,
Winters (available at the Campus Bookstore).
CALCULATOR: A graphing calculator is required for the course. I will use a TI 83 in the class,
however any other graphing calculator will also be sufficient for this course. Calculators that can do
symbolic manipulations such as TI-89 and TI-92 are not allowed on exams or quizzes. Cell phones and
other electronic devices that have capabilities beyond that of a graphing calculator are also not permitted
on exams and quizzes.
COURSE GOALS: Review the basic algebraic techniques. Identify the properties and graphs of linear,
quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Use them in price-demand and price-revenue modeling,
and break even analysis. Learn the concepts of interest and annuities, and apply the knowledge to business
applications. Study the basic counting techniques and probability models, and their applications in
business. Learn to solve systems of linear equations, linear inequalities and linear programming problems.
COURSE COVERAGE: We will cover chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend class regularly, take an active part in class
discussions and in-class activities, and do the assigned work. If you miss a class, you are responsible for
all assignments and announcements made on that day.
It is recommended that you read the sections to be covered in class before the lecture. You are responsible
for material covered in class as well as material from the text, which is assigned but not covered in class.
Lecture time is at a premium; you cannot be taught everything in class. It is your responsibility to learn
the material; the instructor's job is to guide you in your learning. You are also responsible to be aware
of any changes to the syllabus which may be announced in class.
EXAMS: There will be three one hour in-class exams (75% of the grade). Dates of exams will be
announced at least a week in advance.
QUIZZES: There will be a quiz every week except for the exam weeks. They will be short (approx. 1015 minutes) and will be based on material from your homework. One lowest quiz score will be dropped.
It is very important that you take the examinations and quizzes at the scheduled times. Make up
exams/quizzes will be scheduled only for those with university approved absences.
IN CLASS ACTIVITIES: We will spend some time on short in-class activities intended to reinforce the
concepts learned. For some of these activities, you will work individually and for others you will work in
small groups. You are expected to actively participate in these activities. Some of this work may be
collected for grading. There will be no make up for missed in-class activities.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned each class period. Doing problems reinforces the concepts
learned in the class and is crucial to learning mathematics. Moreover, doing homework problems is a
good preparation for the exams and quizzes. In particular, quizzes will be modeled on the homework
problems and some questions may be taken directly from the assigned homework. Homework will not
generally be collected for grading.
MATH TUTORING LAB: The Mathematics Department operates a free, drop-in tutoring lab to assist
students enrolled in Math 204. The lab is located in Swart 113, and is usually staffed from 8:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The lab is also open some evenings. You can find out the schedule at
http://www.uwosh.edu/mathematics/resources/tutor-labs.
It is strongly advised that you start working on this course and use the Tutoring Lab from the very
beginning. The importance of doing the assigned homework cannot be over emphasized. You are urged to
make use of this service.
CENTER FOR ACADEMIC RESOURCES: The Center for Academic Resources (CAR) provides
free, confidential tutoring for students in most undergraduate classes on campus including Math 204.
CAR is located in the Student Success Center, Suite 102. Check the Tutor List page on CAR’s website
http://www.uwosh.edu/car for a list of tutors. If your course is not listed, click on a link to request one,
stop by SSC 102 or call 424-2290. To schedule a tutoring session, simply email the tutor, let him/her
know what class you are seeking assistance in, and schedule a time to meet. Tutoring takes place in SSC
102. Visit the website for more information.
D2L WEBSITE: D2L is the University’s system for online grade keeping and course management. I
will post your quiz and exam grades on D2L. Any supplementary material related to the course will also
be placed there. You can access D2L by logging in at http://www.uwosh.edu/d2lfaq/d2l-login.
