Fun Facts About Dogs
 A dog’s normal temperature is between 101 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
 Despite their breed or size, all dogs have 42 teeth and 321 bones—all breeds.
 The tallest dog on record was a Great Dane named Gibson from California. It
measured 42.2 inches (107 cm) at the shoulder. (Guinness Book of Records,
2004)
 A large breed dog’s resting heart beats between 60 and 100 times per minute,
and a small breed dogs’ heart beats between 100-140. Comparatively, a resting

 62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 72.9 million homes
 In addition to sweating through their paw pads, dogs pant to cool themselves
off.
 The oldest dog on record was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey. He lived
to be 29 years and 282 days old. He was born in 1910 and died in 1939.
Basic Needs of a Dog
 Examination: 1-2 times a year to detect health issues such as dental
disease, cancer, allergies, ear infections and heart disease. Senior pets
should be examined 2 times a year. Pets age 3 ½ years in 6 months.
 Proper nutrition: to prevent weight gain.
 Intestinal deworming: 2-4 times a year. If your dog is on heartworm
prevention it gets dewormed for intestinal worms as well every month.
 Heartworm prevention: – Prevents your dog from getting infected with
heartworms that are transmitted by the bite of a mosquito.
Heartworms can be deadly but are 100% preventable. Prevention
should be given monthly year round.
 Vaccinations: to prevent Rabies, Bordetella/Kennel Cough,
Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo, and Parainfluenza. All of
these can be life threatening and all can be prevented with proper
vaccinations.
 Bloodwork: to evaluate kidney function, liver function, gallbladder
disease and diabetes.
 Flea and tick preventatives: to prevent fleas which lead to skin
infections, cause tapeworms, and lead to misery for you and your pets.
Also to prevent ticks which transmit Lyme’s Disease, Ehrlichiosis, and
Anaplasmosis for you and your pets.

RABIES:
It’s always FATAL…Is your pet protected?
Rabies is an incurable viral disease that affects the central nervous
system of almost all mammals, including cats, dogs and humans.
Animals which can commonly carry and spread the rabies virus are the
coyote, skunk, fox, raccoon, and bat. It is spread through contact with
the saliva of infected animals through bites or breaks in the skin.
Vaccination will provide your pet with much greater resistance to rabies
if he/she is exposed to the disease, but you must be aware that there is
no cure once it occurs. For this reason, many municipalities, including
the state of Kentucky, absolutely require that all pets receive a 1-year
rabies vaccine annually. In addition you will definitely have to prove
that your pet is vaccinated if you ever have to travel with him/her –
whether across the country or around the world!

May Pet of the Month
Loki the Iguana
Loki came in to FVC to get a wellness checkup in May.
Congrats!
Since we are in the dog days of summer when ticks and fleas are out in full force, I want to
encourage everyone to use their flea and tick prevention on their pets!
 Fleas carry tapeworms, the most common worm, and are also
pure misery for your pets!
 One flea bites and average of 50 times.
 Ticks carry Lyme’s Disease, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis
which can affect you and your pets.
We are seeing a large amount of Ehrlichiosis this year when we are testing dogs at the clinic
using our simple 4DX Test. It is treatable. I hear a lot of clients saying their pets flea and
tick prevention isn’t working anymore.
Remember these important facts:
 Treat all pets in your home or you are wasting your money in
only treating one.
 Any fur animal is a flea hotel.
 Even inside pets need protecting because we as humans can
bring in ticks and fleas.
 Any pet that goes outside needs protecting because fleas and
ticks are everywhere carried by raccoons, squirrels, deer, rabbits
and on and on.
What we recommend:
 Revolution for cats applied topically every month
 Seresto collars which last up to eight months
 Trifexis for dogs given orally every month
 Frontline plus applied topically every month
 Frontline has a guarantee. If their product doesn’t work they
will send Terminix to treat your house for free as long as you
have
o Bought Frontline from a vet
o Have used for 3 months consecutively.
o Have applied Frontline to all pets in the house.
