Gosh, they went quick, perhaps that’s because the Easter stats and Anzac Day fell conveniently in between. Working parents will be letting out a sigh of relief as their broods march back to school - speaking from experience, child care for two weeks straight can be a bit of struggle to organise. Thank goodness in the North Waikato we are spoilt for choice with school holiday options and activities aplenty for all ages. And as the kids head back to school this week, there’ll be more traffic on our roads and children crossing paths to get to school. Take extra care on the roads this week around schools, remember the littlies can dart out of nowhere into the path of traffic. Julie Kaio News Director to do list YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE 1. Member of the group Lila Tekani said there was no time to waste to get it off the ground. ‘‘We can’t really risk any time because another business will get targeted,’’ Tekani said. The call was put out to recruit volunteers two weeks ago and was prompted by the continuous reports on social media about crime in the town. ‘‘I guess social media has presented itself with incidences in the town, it was one after the other, [and] obviously the town has become a target. ‘‘You hear about it from people on that community page [It’s Only Happening in Huntly] screaming out for answers.’’ The issue of crime in the town has been prevalent over the several months since and lead to a community meeting in January where business people and residents vented their frustrations. Police, and Waikato Mayor Allan Sanson and Huntly Ward councillors also attended. However the action of starting the watch group didn’t come from there, Tekani said. Tekani said there was a lot of interest for involvement but there is still need for more volunteer patrollers. ‘‘Two hours per week [from each volunteer] is all we’re asking...It’s all about revitalising this community to make it safer. ‘‘We just want to get everyone involved, whether you’re a beneficiary or a church worker.’’ Patrollers will act as the ‘‘eyes and ears’’ only - they will not play a part in controling the situation. Tekani said they would also act as town ambassadors and to connect with youth. ‘‘First and foremost, we want to get these kids to know us.’’ A Community Patrol NZ group currently runs in the town and was something Tekani encouraged others to get involved in. However the new watch group was easier to volunteer for as its selection criteria was more flexible, she said. The main focus for now will be the town centre but with more numbers, it could be extended and the ultimate aim is it to run 24/7. There will be a minimum of two volunteers per shift and training is available. A meeting was held at the Huntly West Community Hub on Tuesday for those interested. To join the group or to learn more, Tekani can be contacted on 027 550 3363. Huntly’s first mosque CAITLIN WALLACE Huntly’s first Islamic Community Centre and mosque has opened. The building on Bridge St, formerly a fish and chip shop, has undergone renovations over the past six months. It was gifted to the community by its Auckland owner and is now in the hands of resident Zahid Abrahams and volunteers in the community as well as Hamilton friends Mustafa Farouk and Musa Taukiri. The centre is available for anyone who wishes to use it at any time. It will be beneficial for Muslims who are passing through and need a place for one of their daily prayers. Prior to the opening of the centre, Muslim community members in Huntly used to convene at one house every Thursday. And a grassy park Mustafa Farouk, left, Zahid Abrahams and Musa Taukiri welcome all utilise the Islamic Community Centre in Huntly which is used as a Mosque as well. CAITLIN WALLACE/FAIRFAX NZ area on the roadside heading south of Huntly was often used for that purpose, he said. Farouk said the five prayers throughout the day were done anywhere, as long as they were on time. He said it was also a place where people from different cultures could come together. There is no furniture in the centre, only mats, but it is complete with a kitchen and bathroom. Farouk compared it to the running of a marae where different functions could be held everyone was treated like family. Abrahams said the dairy owner next door will have the key during the day and in the evenings, he would be available for people to collect it from. An official opening day is on May 7 from 11:30am. Coaltown Blues comes to Huntly A fundraiser for the Waikato Coalfields Museum will be carried out in a fitting manner with a Coaltown Blues performance. The Meteor in Hamilton has joined forces with Chris Green of Black Beech Theatre in a ‘‘Meteor at Large’’ venture to take the Mervyn Thompson- written play throughout the Waikato. This one-man drama with songs is the story of a young boy growing up in a coal mining town during The Depression, war and post-war years. Its opening performance will be held on May 5 at the Huntly RSA. Tickets cost $25 and $20 unwaged. But their NCEA results said otherwise. Year 12 students at Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga, a kura kaupapa Maori in Huntly, had the country’s top NCEA Level 2 results for a decile one school. They all passed. The results, however, were not surprising to Education Minister Hekia Parata, who said Maori students in a Maori-medium education, achieved better results than those in mainstream schools. And the school’s deputy principal, Rangimarie Mahuta, shares that sentiment. She said her students’ achievements were on par with students who attend a decile 10 school. ‘‘We became a wharekura because we weren’t happy with the mainstream system,’’ Mahuta said. ‘‘That achievement, of top NCEA marks, was across a number of subjects - not just te reo rangatira - but English, maths, science, history, business studies. ‘‘There’s a perception that wharekura kids have got it all in unit standards or it’s all in te reo Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga has 450 students, from years one - 13. CHRISTEL YARDLEY/ FAIRFAX NZ Maori and all doing performing arts. Well, no actually, those results were achieved across a range of core curriculum subjects and external exams.’’ Parata said the statistics tell the story of real kids and she was particularly proud of the gains achieved by Maori and Pasifika students. ‘‘Maori-medium students have rates of NCEA Level 2 achievement on par with all students in the school population, but significantly higher - 15 to 20 per cent higher - than Maori students in English-medium. ‘‘It is so important that iwi are equipped with the tools to support young Maori to stay for longer in high-quality kura, and to leave with good qualifications and a strong cultural capacity including te reo Māori.I would love to see iwi and whanau encouraging their kids to stay in Maori medium education throughout their learning pathway.’’ In the weeks leading up to exams, Rakaumanga students, teachers and parents spent weekends at Waahi Pa Marae. The students were used to kapa haka wananga (weekends spent practising kapa haka) so the teachers kept that same environment and exchanged the poi for a pen. Mahuta said it takes a village to raise a child and her kura is a testament to that. ‘‘I have huge criticisms about deciles, because as soon as they put a decile on you - it immediately gives the audience a perspective of what type of person you may be or what type of background you come from,’’ she said. ‘‘But it shows, with our students, that that is not correct. Our students have the privilege of growing up with their nan and koro and extended family. They have awesome parents, and teachers that give up their own time to help our children achieve.’’ Former Maāori Party leader and principal of Te Kura Kaupapa Motuhake o Tawhiuau, Pem Bird, said if those same students were placed into mainstream education, they would not have done as well. ‘‘It makes perfect sense to be schooled in who you are, this is where kura-a-iwi comes in because Maāori are first and foremost, iwi people,’’ Bird said. TRAVEL • HEALTH LIFESTYLE FAMILY • RECIPES SPORT MAY 3, 2017, NORTH WAIKATO NEWS 7 stuff.co.nz Fire ignited for local kyokushin star CAITLIN WALLACE Standing face to face against a world kyokushin karate champion, Lucas McKinnon was in awe. The Huntly resident came away with a fourth placing in Super Heavy Weight at the invitation only World Weight Categories in Tokyo. Kyokushin is a style of standup, full contact karate. His list of achievements in the sport include a place in the top 32 at the world Kyokushin Karate Tournament last year as well as the New Zealand and Australian titles. It was a first for him at this particular tournament, representing New Zealand. ‘‘The first opponent was a Russian boy and I progressed past him and I went into the semifinal.’’ There he fought Shohei Kamada, number one in the world for his category, in a three-minute round. ‘‘I was sort of half trying to beat him and half admiring him... his speed was incredible for his size, he was like lightening. ‘‘There is a lot more ring circuit to the way he fights, it was what caught me out.’’ McKinnon said he outweighed everyone in his category but they were both about the same height. He didn’t come away with a podium finish this time, but the experience of competing against someone of that status was reward enough. And it’s fuelled the fire to train harder in hopes of taking him on again. ‘‘I’m coming for him again, I’ve got unfinished business with him.’’ To achieve one of his next goals of a podium finish and defending the New Zealand and Australian title later in the year, he’s transforming the way he trains. In his shed, where most of it takes place, he’s decided to change things up. ‘‘I’m just going to hit it and start again, definitely hungrier now. ‘‘My family believe I can go all the way so that has ignited it.’’ While he isn’t short of achievements, McKinnon has his eyes on the-sought-after trophies that stand at almost six foot. ‘‘It’s those trophies in particular that everyone wants to get.’’ McKinnon hopes to be invited to the World Weight Categories again next year and he said it would all depend on this year’s performances. Lucas McKinnon hopes to fight in the World Weight Categories again. Racing season ends with a triple header ALLAN POWELL The Ryco 24.7 North Island Midget Championship was held at Huntly Speedway on Friday. With this meeting being another triple header for championship events, it was always going to be a big night of racing. The crowd was treated to the North Island Midget, Waikato Sprint Car and Waikato Ministock champs. The Ryco 24.7 Midgets were split into two groups with group one headed by 2NZ Brad Mosen. Starting on pole was 21V Peter Huijs from Wanganui. Huijs got a great start to lead right until the finish which was a bit of a surprise to the other drivers as they hadn’t heard much about him. As the laps went by Huijs lead from Mosen with 91A Hayden Guptill and 31A Daniel Thomas all wanting to take second spot. In the final laps, Mosen set a new lap record of 13.56 only to have Guptill lower this to 13.52 seconds. The second group of midgets was headed by current 2017 Huntly Speedfest champion 39A Peter Hunnibell. Sent infield was 74V Ben Huijs after hitting 6A Cam Corbett who Brad Mosen from Auckland. JEREMY WARD rolled. Another new midget lap record went Hunnibell with a time of 13.418. Heat one was won by 97A Michael Brunt then Hunnibell, and third was 25A Scott Buckley. In the race of the top six Mosen ended with pole from Hunnibell, Guptill, Brunt, Thomas and Buckley. In the final 25 laps Mosen lead from Guptill and Thomas drove around the outside of Brunt into fourth. Finishing as the new 2017 Ryco 24.7 North Island Midget champion was Mosen with Thomas in second and Hunnibell placed third. The Waikato Sprint Car championship was run over three heats on a points system. Heat one was won by 97M Brad Marsh and in second 55A Daniel Thomas set the lowest time of 12.25 seconds for a lap. From the start Thomas had a right rear tyre going flat that he was unaware of and in the final three laps he slowed down allowing 18P Greg Pickerill to lead from Tidd with Thomas trying to hold on. The race was won by Pickerill. In the Waikato Ministocks heat one was won by 57H Dylan Marshall and the second by his younger brother Ryan. The overall winners in first equal in the ministocks was Dylan Marshall and Connor Van Lieshout.
