Antarctica Peninsula - Land of the Penguins Itinerary
Your journey starts with the flight from Buenos Aires to the capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia, where MS Fram sets course through the scenic Beagle Channel for the Drake Passage and Antarc ca. The Drake Passage and the Antarc c Convergence The Drake Passage is where the Atlan c and Pacific meet the Great Southern Ocean, crea ng the Antarc c Convergence, where the warmer waters of the north meet the colder, denser, less saline waters of the south. As the colder water sinks, a mixing occurs that brings nutrients to the surface and makes the area par cularly rich in marine life. As well as the chance to spot albatross and other seabirds, the crossing will feature a series of lectures focusing on the history, environment, and wildlife of Antarc ca. Discovering Antarc ca The con nent is an endless white wilderness full of amazing vistas. We’ll be spending six days here and the Antarc ca that we see will be the same as it was in the days of the great explorers- unchanged, remote, and awe inspiring. You can look forward to views of massive, sheer cliffs with jagged peaks dropping straight into the sea and icebergs created by huge glaciers giving off beau ful shades of blue . We will a empt to land on several sites. All of these places offer unique sites, close encounters with wildlife and exci ng historic tales. Due to the changing weather condions in Antarc ca, the sailing plan will be introduced during daily briefings. On land, our Expedi on Team will explain what you see and help you to not disturb the fragile nature and wildlife. When condi ons allow, hikes, or other ac vi es on land and at sea will be offered. Antarc ca’s Wildlife On floa ng ice flows you can occasionally see wildlife, such as penguins, seals and birds. Antarc ca is the only permanent landing area for the Emperor penguins. Antarc ca is the home of many other species of penguins including Adelie , Chinstrap, Gentoo penguins. There are also different species of whale found in Antarc ca waters , amongst them Minke, Humpback, Blue, Sperm, Orca (killer whale). All Antarc c whales feed in the Southern Ocean during the Antarc c summer and then migrate long distances north to breed and give birth to their young during the winter. The Journey Back The voyage from the Antarc c Peninsula to Ushuaia at the southern p of Argen na. When we arrive back in the southernmost town, Ushuaia in the morning our voyage comes to an end. A er debarka on we transfer you to the airport for your charter flight to Buenos Aires. Based on weather and ice condi ons at me of travel, the final i nerary will be presented a er embarka on.
