Rhyme Riddles

I know a word that rhymes with star,
Not a school bus, it’s a car!
Car, far, jar, guitar,
So many words that rhyme with star!
I know a word that rhymes with moon,
Not a fork, it’s a spoon!
Spoon, soon, noon, balloon,
So many words that rhyme with moon!
Rhyme riddles!
Such a lot of fun to do
Rhyme riddles!
I’ve got another one for you…
(Here’s how to play this game, my friends:
Rhyming words sound the same at the end!)
I know a word that rhymes with goat,
Not a ship, it’s a boat!
Boat, float, coat, throat,
So many words that rhyme with boat!
I know a word that rhymes with black,
Sit in front or sit in back!
Back, snack, quack, track,
So many words that rhyme with black!
(Chorus)
I know a word that rhymes with mummy,
Not your head, it’s your tummy!
I know a word that rhymes with yellow,
It’s not pudding, it’s Jell-O!
I know a word that rhymes with chair,
Wash your face and comb your hair!
I know a word that rhymes with red,
Brush your teeth and get in bed!
(Chorus)
I know a word that rhymes with stink,
Wash me in the kitchen sink!
Sink, ink, wink, blink,
So many words that rhyme with stink!
I know a word that rhymes with friend,
Not the beginning, it’s the end!
End, mend, blend, spend,
So many words that rhyme with friend!
I know a word that rhymes with blue,
Not your sock, it’s your shoe!
Boo, moo, guess who?
So many words that rhyme with blue!

~ Foreword ~
Rhyme Riddles song activities provide students opportunities to practice the
five language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking). Students
may work independently, cooperatively, or peer-paired. The students engage in
activities that accommodate diverse learning styles and strategies as well as
multiple intelligences.
The activities facilitate the exploration and practice of new as well as
familiar approaches to learning: the alphabetical order activity reinforces phonemic
awareness and facilitates encoding skills; the word search puzzle activity affords
practice scanning and strengthens encoding skills; the rhyming words activity
provides opportunities to encode new words and expand vocabulary; the write a
story or a poem activity engages students in creative writing.
Activities aligned with the Standards include:
Standard 1: Language for Information and Understanding
• ABC word order (vocabulary words)
• ABC word order (the rhyming words)
• word search puzzle
Standard 2: Language for Literary Response and Expression
• creative writing
• research (rhyming words)
