INTRODUCTION
Within Thomson Reuters Eikon you can build your own Flex Documents, or customize a pre-built Sample to suit your needs.
After completing this workbook you should be able to:






Navigate to and modify market specific flex samples
Create a new flex document and populate it with apps and data
Find useful content on the Eikon Home Page and include it in your Flex Documents
Create a Quote list and link it to other apps
Make your Flex Documents available at any location
Find additional information using the Related menu
ABOUT THIS WORKBOOK
This workbook is designed to be used alongside Thomson Reuters Eikon. On the following pages you’ll find a series of exercises that will introduce you to the features and
functions of the Flex environment.
Each exercise is marked with this icon, along with a summary of the exercise. Just follow the instructions in the left hand column to
complete the exercise. Visuals are provided in the right hand column to guide you and to show you what your screen should look lke.
BEFORE YOU START
The Thomson Reuters Eikon Home Page displays the most relevant information based on your job role. Some of the examples in this workbook are based on a Home Page
tailored for Fixed Income markets.
If you want to follow our examples exactly then you should set your Home Page to display Fixed Income information.

Navigate to My Eikon  My Profile.
Click the Edit link in the Professional Profile section.
Select Fixed Income Portfolio Manager from the list of Job Roles.
Click Save.
Your Home Page will update to display Fixed Income information.

ACCESSING AND MODIFYING FLEX SAMPLES
Thomson Reuters Eikon has an extensive range of pre-built Flex samples which can be easily customized to suite your exact needs.
In this activity we will open the Charting Flex Sample, add a new frame to the Document, and populate the frame with
Commodities News.
Click on the dropdown menu at the top of the
screen.
Then select Flex Document to open the Flex
Samples page.
You are presented with a selection of pre-built
Flex Documents, organized by asset class.
Open the Cross Asset category, and choose
Charting.
The Charting template displays real-time charts
for key data across several asset classes on
separate sheets.
Click on a tab to view charts for a selected asset
class.
Navigate to the Commodities tab

To add a frame, click and drag the right-side
border of one of the right-hand side charts to
make a new frame.
Your cursor will change shape and
will look like this:
You can also add frames by dragging the left
hand border of objects located on the left hand
side of the document, or the bottom of frames
located at the bottom of the document.
Click Add News to open a blank news app
inside the frame.
Type C in the News app command line to bring
up a list of matches.
Then select Commodities International News
Service from the list of suggestions. The news
app will display real-time headlines from the
Commodities news service.

CREATE AND POPULATE A NEW FLEX DOCUMENT
Thomson Reuters Eikon Flex Documents can contain a variety of data applications (apps) including quotes, calculators, news, and charts.
Create a Flex Document and populate it with news and price data for the Eur/US Dollar Spot Rate, then save it
to the Thomson Reuters Drive.
First, create a Blank Flex document. Click on
the dropdown menu at the top of the screen.
Then select Flex Document to open the Flex
Samples page.
Then select the Blank Flex template with
four frames.
In the top left frame click Add Chart.
A blank Chart app is now displayed in the
top left frame.
Now populate the chart with real-time data
for the Euro/US Dollar Spot Rate.
Enter Euro in the Chart app command line
As you type “Euro” the Autosuggest tool
displays a number of possible matches in a
dropdown menu. Select the Euro/US
Dollar FX Spot rate from the FX category.
The chart app will update and display
historical data for the Euro/US Dollar spot
rate.

Next we’ll create a quote app to display
real-time price data for this instrument in
this empty frame. In the top right frame,
click Add Quote.
If you know an instrument code you can
type it directly into the app command line.
Type EUR= in the Quote app command line
and press Enter.
The Quote app updates displaying real time
data for the Euro/US Dollar Spot.
Our third frame will contain a News app.
In the bottom left frame, click Add News.
You can add content to an app by dragging
a code from another app. Click and drag
EUR= from the Chart app and drop it into
the News app.
Note: You should drag the code within the
app (not from the command line). You’ll
notice that the code in a chart is prefixed
with a Q – this can be ignored)

The News app is now populated with the
latest news headlines related to the
Euro/US Dollar exchange rate.
To save the document, press Ctrl + S or
click the Save icon in the toolbar.
Give the Flex Document a name, and
indicate where you would like to save it.
The Thomson Reuters Drive is a hosted file
management solution that allows you to
access your files from anywhere.
Click Save to complete the action.

INSERTING ITEMS IN A FLEX DOCUMENT FROM CONTENT EXPLORER
The Thomson Reuters Eikon Home Page is populated with workflow-relevant information, chosen according to the job role specified in your Profile, which can be inserted into
your Flex Documents.
Use the Pop in feature to incorporate real-time data from the Thomson Reuters Eikon Home Page into a Flex Document.
From the Home Page select the Fixed
Income Curve Chart Real-time link to
open a pop-up chart.
[The real-time link becomes visible when
you roll your cursor over the display range.]
The chart displays in a pop-up window.
To place the Chart in a Flex Document,
click the Pop in icon.
You can either pop in the app in any open
Flex Document, or add it to a new Flex
Document. Select New Blank Flex.
The Chart app is popped into the first frame
of a blank Flex Document.

CREATE A QUOTE LIST IN A FLEX DOCUMENT
The Quote List enables you to create, monitor and manage lists and portfolios of instruments.
Create a new Quote List to display the constituents of the FTSE.
In an empty frame, click on Add Quote List
The open Quote List dialogue will display.
Click Create New Quote List...
Then give your Quote List a name and
click OK.
A new blank Quote List is displayed. We’ll
now add our instruments.

In the command line type FTSE 100.
Click on the FTSE 100 Index link in the
Indices section to add it to the Quote List.
The FTSE 100 index is now displayed in
the Quote List. Click the arrow next to the
instrument code to display all constituents
You can also add individual instruments by
typing the code directly into the quote list,
or by entering the company name in the
command line.
The Quote List is automatically saved as
instruments are added or when changes
are made.

FIND MORE CONTENT WITH THE RELATED MENU
You can access a wealth of context-sensitive related data by right-clicking on any app in your Flex Document.
From the Majors Government Bond pre-built display use the Related menu to navigate to credit information for a selected instrument.
Navigate to the Flex samples and select
Fixed Income.
Click on Majors in the Credit section.
Right click on any instrument in the Quote
List. Then select Related
The Related menu is a list of contextsensitive display options, including charts,
analytics, news and calculators. Select
CreditViews.

A new screen displaying a comprehensive
display of credit information for the selected
instrument opens.
Click on any of the values in blue font to
see the latest quote or chart.
If you want to add the information to a Flex
Document, click the Pop-in icon and
choose a destination.
You may want to navigate back to the Flex
document and try right-clicking in the
various apps. You’ll notice that the Related
menu changes depending on the app
selected.

AUTOMATE YOUR WORKFLOWS USING LINKING
Thomson Reuters Eikon allows you to link a Quote List to many apps including News, Charts, and Calculators. Clicking an instrument in the Quote List will populate the
linked apps with the selected instrument data.
Link a Quote List populated with the constituents of the FTSE to the Stock Return Calculator
Starting with a blank 2-frame Flex
document, insert the Quote list in the left
frame.
Click Add Quote List.
If you created a Quote List for the FTSE
100 in the earlier exercise you can select
that now (and proceed to the next step in
this activity.)
Otherwise, select Create New Quote
List … Give your Quote List a name and
click OK. In the Quote List command line,
type FTSE 100 and select the FTSE 100
index from the indices section.
Click the downward arrow to view the
constituents of the FTSE.
We’ll populate the right hand frame with
the Stock Return Calculator. Click Add
Calculator.

Select Stock Return from the Equities
and Derivatives section
To link two apps, right-click the Quote List.
Select Link To, and choose an app. We’ll
click Calculator. Then select Advanced
Link.
Choose the action that will populate the
calculator when you click an instrument in
the Quote List.
Click an instrument in the quote list to
populate the Calculator.
Clicking another instrument will
automatically refresh the calculator with
data for the newly selected company.

SETTING AN ALERT
With Alerts you can monitor the performance of any instrument. Alerts can be in the form of a pop-up, email or message on your desktop.
Set a Market Data Alert from a quote list item to notify you when the Last price is 1% greater than
the previous day’s Close
The screens in this activity show the Market
View flex template (which can be found in
the Cross Asset category), but you can
perform the steps from any Quote list or
Quote object.
Right-click on the field and instrument you
wish to monitor. In this case, Last. Then
select Set Alert.
The New Market Data Alert dialog
automatically populates with the instrument
and field name that were clicked on.
The default condition is the greater than
character (>).
We want the alert to activate when the Last
price is 1 percent or greater than the
Close.
Click on the dropdown around next to
Value/Criterion and select Close.

Select the asterisk (* for multiplication) from
the operands menu, and enter a value.
As we want to receive the alert when the
Last price is 1 percent greater than the
previous day’s close the expression is
* 1.01.
You can add more criteria by clicking the
plus button to the right of the Value field.
Select a Notification Type. We’ll choose a
Pop-up alert message.
Choose how many times you want the alert
to appear. We will deactivate the alert after
one occurrence by selecting Trigger Once
and Deactivate.
When you’re happy with your selections,
click Set.
The Alert is now active.
A Pop-up alert message will display if the
defined criteria are met.

MAKING YOUR THOMSON REUTERS EIKON FILES AVAILABLE ANYWHERE
Thomson Reuters Drive is a hosted file management solution for your Thomson Reuters Eikon documents, such as Flex screens, and your Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel
worksheets. Files saved to the Thomson Reuters Drive can be accessed from anywhere, whenever you log in to Thomson Reuters Eikon. This is especially useful if you are
accessing Eikon away from your usual workstation and cannot save to your local drive.
Save an open file to the Thomson Reuters Drive.
Right-click on the Flex Document tab, and
select Save As.
In the Save Flex dialog, choose Thomson
Reuters Drive from the Save in list.
Enter the name of the file in File name and
click Save. The file can now be accessed
from anywhere desktop where you have
Eikon installed.
To open a file saved on Thomson Reuters
Drive, click on the Main Menu icon (located
at the top left of the screen).
Select File, then Open.
Select Thomson Reuters Drive, and
choose a file.

USE MESSENGER TO SHARE APPS
You can instantly share Thomson Reuters Eikon Apps, such as charts, quotes, news and calculators, using Eikon Messenger
Use Eikon Messenger to share a chart by dragging and dropping, and with the related menu.
Open Messenger by clicking the icon in the
Taskbar.
Right-click on the Messenger taskbar and
select Always Visible to keep the
Messenger window open on top of your
Thomson Reuters Eikon workspace.
Open a conversation with one of your
contacts by double clicking on their name.
You can drag a Chart (or any app) from the
Flex document into the conversation
command line. Then press Return.
If the recipient is a Thomson Reuters Eikon
user, he or she will be able to open a copy
of the app exactly as it appears on your
desktop. Users of other Messenger
services (e.g. Yahoo! Messenger) will
receive a static snapshot of the data.

You can also use the Related menu to
share an app.
If you have a conversation open already,
right-click on the app you wish to send via
Messenger.
Select Share, then Send to Messenger.
Press Return to send the message.
