CUSTOM HOUSE TRIVIA Custom House was built in 1813 at a time when Poole was a major port
for trade to New Foundland and Customs and Excise formed an essential part of quayside life. If you look outside
you’ll see the historic wooden King’s Beam, where goods were weighed to charge the King’s customs. Spot the
weighing hooks on our ceilings too!
Precious trading goods were often seized from smugglers and famously, 2 tons of contraband tea that had
been stored at Custom House, was stolen back by the Hawkshurst Gang in a notorious theft of its day.
