It may be prudent to laminate them for repeated use. Suggested Activities 2a) Understand that effective readers draw on several sources of knowledge to help them make sense of unfamiliar words. • Discuss the various strategies of reading as a group. Encourage learners to use those ones which best apply to them. • Using a variety of texts e.g. official documents, letters, recipes, sports coverage, ask learners to read the articles noting down any unfamiliar words. In pairs discuss these words. Encourage learners to work out the meaning using reading strategies discussed earlier. Use a dictionary to check the meaning. Ask learners to write at least one sentence using that word. • Encourage learners to create a personal collection or dictionary of all unfamiliar words from their own reading, including definition and one sentence written by them using the word in context so as to demonstrate their understanding. 2b) Apply knowledge of sound and letter patterns and of structure of words, including compound words, root words, grammatical endings, prefixes, suffixes and syllable divisions to help decode words. • As a group investigate and discuss the origins of compound words. Ask learners to name some. Note these on the board. Aim to have at least one suggestion for every letter of the alphabet. • Using newspaper or magazine cuttings, ask learners to highlight all of the words containing prefixes and suffixes. Highlight each in a different colour i.e. prefixes in blue, suffixes in green. • Using leaflets or advertisements, ask learners to circle all words with common roots. Different coloured pens will be needed so each common root is represented by a different colour. • Resource Sheets 1 - 3 can be cut up and used as a pair activity. In a style similar to ‘Snap’ each player starts with half the pack of cards. They take it in turns to lay the cards face up. As soon as the two piles make a compound word players can shout ‘word’ and the cards are then placed into their pile. The player with all the cards at the end is the winner. ©West Nottinghamshire College 1 Excellence in skills development READING STRATEGIES ENTRY 3 Rw/E3.5 2 • Resource Sheets 1 - 3 can be used to play ‘The Memory Game’ as a pair or group activity. Start the game with all of the cards spread facedown on the table. Players take it in turns to turn over two cards. When the revealed cards make up a compound word, the player keeps the cards and has another turn. If they fail to make a match, the play moves to the next person. The winner is the person with the most cards at the end. • Resource Sheets 5, 6, 7 and 8 can be used for prefix/suffix matching exercises. This can be combined with Resource Sheet 4 in order to identify the number of syllables in the newly formed words. • Resource Sheet 9 can be used for a group exercise. On the board, write out various words containing a silent letter when read. The learners’ task is to identify which is the silent letter. Hand out the letter cards ensuring each leaner has at least 3 cards. If a learner believes that they hold the silent letter for a word they then blutac that letter over the original. Discuss your findings including any errors as a group. It may be useful to photocopy this Resource Sheet on to coloured paper for ease of use on the whiteboard.
