MOVING FORWARD WITH FAITH AND HOPE
On April 4th, the Rev. John Farley, District Superintendent of the Cal-Pac
South District, notified San Carlos UMC that after consultation with Pastor
Sue and the Appointive Cabinet, Bishop Minerva Carcano intends to
appoint Pastor Sue to serve as the pastor at Santee UMC as of July 1, 2014.

On the same day, Rev. John Farley also advised that Bishop Carcano
intends to appoint the Rev. Martha Wingfield to serve as the pastor at San
Carlos UMC effective July 1, 2014. Rev. Martha Wingfield is currently
serving as the Associate Pastor at San Dieguito UMC. Martha previously
served as the Senior Pastor at St. Mark’s UMC in Clairemont. She is
married to Rev. Dr. Myron Wingfield.
Although Pastor Sue was consulted about this change in appointment, the
transition from San Carlos to Santee will not be without some emotional,
spiritual and logistical struggles, not only for Pastor Sue, but also for those
who have worked with, been counseled by, mentored by, ministered to, and
inspired by Pastor Sue. Her personal warmth in caring for the congregants
of San Carlos, her administrative acumen and her profound spiritual grounding will be missed, as will her husband, Tim.
The Staff Parish Relations Committee, working with Pastors Sue and Martha,
will organize appropriate activities to say farewell to Pastor Sue and welcome
to Pastor Martha.
During this time of transition it is important for us all to recall the counsel of
the Apostle Paul to the church at Corinth when he told the church to “keep
alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous and be strong. Let all that you
do be done in love.” Let us all pray that we can be so bold and compassionate as we assist each other and both pastors in this transition.

Membership Class
June 8th
If you’ve been considering joining our church family here at San Carlos UMC, mark your calendars for our
next Membership Class, Sunday, June 8th at 11:30am. When we decide to move from attender to member,
we publically commit to being a growing, active participant in the body of Christ here at San Carlos. We
commit to supporting, encouraging, praying for, and offering accountability to our fellow church family
members. And we know that they will do the same for us, as we all work together to grow in the love and
the knowledge of Christ.
Come and learn what it means to be a member of the United Methodist Church at San Carlos UMC.
Contact the office at (619) 464-4331 or [email protected] for more information or to reserve your
spot.

SUPPORT ST AFF
The singer Bon Jovi did not originate the line, but the simple statement that
as things change they stay the same seems particularly important to us at
San Carlos right now. Our community is experiencing a lot of change all at
once. With Pastor Sue transitioning to a new congregation this summer,
and Cody leaving as the Youth Director, many of us in the community may
be nervous of what is to come.
As much as things will change, I am not an outsider. I started attending
San Carlos with my mom and siblings in the year 2001, but I also attended preschool here in the 90s. I have made some of my best friends
here in this community. I went to school at Azusa Pacific University and
spent my summers as an intern here with Cody and the Youth Group.
Having the opportunity to step into the role of Youth Director here at San
Carlos feels like I am coming home to a community that has loved and
supported me for so many years. I am a family member coming back to
join in with the great vision and movement that is happening here on the
corner of Navajo and Cowles Mountain Boulevard.
The author and speaker Rob Bell talks about change in his book Velvet
Elvis. He says,
“Times Change. God doesn’t, but times do. We learn and grow, and
the world around us shifts, and the Christian faith is alive only when it
is listening, morphing, innovating, letting go of whatever has gotten in
the way of Jesus and embracing whatever will help us be more and
more the people God wants us to be.”
I am reminded of this text because it puts the pressures and anxieties
of change into perspective. I take comfort in knowing that as times
change, and ministries grow and morph into something different, the
God that we follow is still leading the way.
As things at San Carlos change, the mission and vision of our church is
still the same as it has always been. Staff will come and go here at San
Carlos, but, those of you that call San Carlos home will continue to carry
out the mission of God in this world.
For those that I have not yet met, please come and say hello on a Sunday
morning! For those that would like to have a longer conversation, please
send me an email to [email protected] and we can set up a time
to meet longer. I am so excited to be a part of this journey with all of you.

Alpha Parenting Volunteers:
Thank you to all of those who participated in our Alpha Parenting Course. The
meals were delicious and the desserts were yummy. The Fellowship Hall looked
warm, inviting and festive. The substance of the program was greatly enhanced by
our dedicated facilitators. The participants really got a lot of good information. The
childcare workers were amazing!
I sincerely believe that the best way to help children is to help their parents be better
parents. You all did a wonderful job! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Kim Ports, Children and Family Ministries Director
I would like to thank Steve
Johnson for doing a great job
of presenting the Defibrillator
Training to church members.
Thank you also to those who
attended. This was time well
spent, to save a life if ever
needed.
Thank you,
Jan Karnousky

Dear Church Family,
I would like to thank you so
much for your love, prayers,
presence and beautiful cards
for our family as John battled
cancer for the past 15 months.
The Celebration of Life service
was outstanding and my thanks
especially to our wonderful
choirs who sang so beautifully.
This was a real testament to
the kind of church we are and
all who were in attendance said
it was the most wonderful service they had attended. I don’t
know how people go through
hard times without a loving
church family to support them.
In HIS Name,
Jan Tucker and Family
Dear Pastor Sue,
This is a long overdue thank you to you
and all the people at SCUMC. I can’t tell
you how much I appreciate the many
prayers and the wonderful prayer blanket
that I know represents a lot of work and
prayers done by the Prayer Quilt Ministry.
I thank all the people that have wished me
well and included Judy and I in their
prayer list. Judy has been an Angel to me
and without her I never would have made
it. I believe that I am improving and if it is
God’s will my recovery will continue. You
may not know it, but we were married at
SCUMC in 1980, so your church and people are very special to me. These past
few months have shown me how many
good friends we have and I am glad to
have you as one of them. Thank you all.
Yours in Christ,
Scott Schneider
T h a n k y o u so much to the crew that
came in early April to spruce up our
Sanctuary for Easter! We appreciate your
work. Corners were dusted, crannies
cleaned out, wood polished, and windows
cleaned. Everything looked beautiful for
our Easter services. Included in the work
team was Michael Ann Haight, who
faithfully serves every
single week,
straightening and preparing our Sanctuary
for Sundays. Special thanks to Carol
Lockwood for organizing and spearheading this effort!

May
is Mental Health Month
Since 1949, May has been observed as National Mental
Health Awareness Month, a time when advocates and
activists across the country draw attention to the mental
health issues that affect as many as one in four
Americans. Today, more people die from suicide in the
United States than from traffic accidents or homicides, and
we lose 25 soldiers to suicide for every solider lost in
combat.
Unfortunately, because of the stigma associated with
mental illness, many people are too ashamed or
embarrassed to seek the help they need for themselves or
their loved ones. National Mental Health Awareness
Month is a time when we work together to break through
that stigma. We express compassion for those who struggle with mental health issues, and we draw attention to the
proven methods that can help change their lives for the
better.
