Anne has been fantastic in sharing her knowledge of the museum with me over the past few weeks. I am grateful for the opportunity to join you all in preserving the history of Cape Coral. My passion for historic preservation comes from the years I worked with the Town of Fort Myers Beach where I was involved in all aspects of the operation of Mound House, a historical and archaeological site. I enjoyed working with the wonderful volunteers who had a vital role in the success of Mound House. I am happy to now be working alongside and learning from a new team of talented, dedicated and passionate volunteers here in the city that has always been my home. To all of you who I have had a chance to meet, thank you for the warm welcome. I look forward to getting to know all of our volunteers and members. So if we haven’t had a chance to chat about what makes Cape Coral’s history special to you, please stop by as I would love to hear your story. The first official mail to come to Cape Coral came by boat on October 21, 1959, the name of the boat was the Santiva (a replica of this boat is on display at the Captiva Historical Museum inside the Captiva Library). The boat made regular daily trips, arriving in Cape Coral about 9:30 a.m. then continuing on to the outer islands, Sanibel, Captiva and Pine Island. Passengers were carried and a number of people took the trip just to see what the other islands looked like. JOIN US AT THE CAPE CORAL HISTORICAL MUSEUM On Saturday, January 31th from 10am until 4pm at 544 Cultural Park Boulevard, Cape Coral This is a one day only event! There will be a showing of the 392 year old coins from the famous Mel Fisher “Atocha” coins recovered off the coast of Florida from the shipwrecked “Nuestra Señora de Atocha”, a Spanish galleon that was carrying gold and silver coins and bars, minted in the New World, to Spain in 1622. On September 6, 1622, the “Atocha” struck a reef and sank in a raging storm while sailing near the Florida Keys. Mel Fisher’s salvage company, “Treasure Salvors”, retrieved these coins along with other memorabilia, of which various coins will be displayed at the Cape Coral museum. For the admission cost of $5.00, you will also have the opportunity to tour the wonderful Cape Coral Historical Museum. A few minutes later a saber- toothed cat jumps on a small horse, a twelve foot sloth pulls over your orange tree and a ten ton mammoth starts pulling huge chunks out of your manicured yard… where is code enforcement when you need them. Over one million years ago there were sharks swimming in the Caloosahatchee River that were over forty feet long.
