LENTEN CAMPAIGN 2017
For our Lenten campaign this year, we will adopt a campaign launched by Omar Munie called “Omarm Diversiteit” or
“Embrace Diversity”. Omar is a young and talented Dutch fashion designer, who at nine years of age flew to The
Netherlands to escape war-torn Somalia. He designed bracelets made from orange swim vests used by refugees who
jumped out of precarious boats to reach the shores of Greece. These handmade and unique bracelets are being sold for
€25 each -- half of which will go towards the manufacturing of these bracelets, and the remainder will be used to help
employ refugees and people in straitened circumstances. These are provided work in Omar’s dream factory, the factory that
produces these bracelets and other leather fashion accessories. For every bracelet sold in our parish, CORDAID has
generously pledged to match it with a donation of €5 each to our own refugee program. Three good causes will benefit
from one purchased bracelet. More information on how you can participate in this Lenten Campaign will be in the next
bulletin.

Every Sunday during Lent, the Stations of the Cross will be held in church from 17.00 – 17.30.
ASH WEDNESDAY 2017
Lent is right around the corner and starts with the receiving of the cross of ashes on Ash Wednesday. It’s the first moment
on our journey to repentance and believing in the Gospel. Ash Wednesday and the blessing and distribution of ashes will
be celebrated during mass on Wednesday 1 March, at 19.30 in our church.
CHRISTIAN MEDITATION
Please note that there will be NO Christian Mediation Meeting on Ash Wednesday.
MISSING HYMN BOOKS
Over the past few months we have noticed some of our hymn books have gone missing. Of the 500 purchased last year,
we are currently in possession of only 423. If you have mistakenly taken one home, we would very much appreciate the
return of these expensive books.
BOOK STALL NEWS
The Book Stall is open in the atrium after the morning mass today. This is our last Sunday, until we open once again on
12 March. Come and browse through our new collection of books for the Lenten & Easter Seasons. We also carry Bibles
for all ages, including beautiful gift editions, prayer books, and books on Christian living, healing, etc. In addition, we sell
second hand books for €1 and are happy to receive your surplus of books on religious topics to add to our diminishing
stock. For any questions or requests, please contact bookstall coordinator Rudy Ramondt at [email protected].
EUROPEAN VISITATION
As coordinator of the English Speaking Parishes in European Capitals, Fr. Sjaak will be going on some visits this week,
from 21-23 February. A workshop for our parish secretaries together with colleagues from another English speaking
international parish is also in the works. Learning from each other’s methods and experiences will always prove beneficial
for all.
COS SPIRITUAL ACADEMY ON TUESDAY 28 FEBRUARY:
Lecture of Linda Murnane Ph.D. on International Justice in the courts: “A Calling to Serve”
Linda is a former US Air Force Military Judge and Colonel who is currently working as an
attorney for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. This will be a very personal testimony of how Linda
gradually came to discern her professional and spiritual calling in life, within the larger and often
unfathomable framework of God’s plan. As such, it will also be a testimony of how she discerns
God’s doings in the concrete practice of international justice.
Registration for this lecture is via [email protected]. Venue: COS Loft at 18.30. Brochures
available on the shelves near the church doors as well as on our website at:
www.parish.nl/formation/adult-formation#COS Academy Spiritual Roots.

CARNIVAL TIPS
The last weekend before Lent is not only a feast in Rio de Janeiro, but also celebrated by Catholics in the south of Holland
with big carnival parades and parties. In cities like Maastricht, s’Hertogenbosch, Breda, Tilburg, and Bergen op Zoom,
you’ll find lots of fun and fabulous costumes. In the St. John’s Cathedral of Den Bosch, there will be a Carnival Mass.
During Carnival, the south of The Netherlands is totally different from the rest. Seeing is believing. Have fun!
BAPTISM PLANNING
Baptisms are not normally held during the Lenten season (1 March-16 April) except for emergency cases so please plan
your child’s baptism before or after this season. The first available date for baptism after Easter day, is on Easter
Monday (a holiday in The Netherlands) at 11.00. Contact the Parish Office at [email protected] for more information.
PARISH DAY TRIP TO EXHIBITION ON ‘MARIA’
The Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht is holding an exhibition from 10 February - 20 August entitled “Maria”,
which will depict our Blessed Mother Mary in art and religion through two millenniums. If you are interested to visit this
exhibit, then come join our parish day trip on Saturday 1 April. The plan is to meet at 10.00 in front of the Albert Heijn in
The Hague Central Station. No registration necessary. Just come and join us. All expenses will be on your own account
since many of you may already have in your possession OV and Museum passes. For more information: contact Wiebe at
[email protected], check our parish website at www.parish.nl/latest-news/current-and-upcoming-events, or visit
www.catharijneconvent.nl.
COS PARKING SPOTS AVAILABLE FOR RENT
The Church of Our Saviour has three parking spots available for rent. Please help spread the word to potential
organisations and companies who may be interested in renting affordable and secure parking spaces around
Bezuidenhoutseweg. Email the parish office at [email protected] for rates and other information.
ALTAR FLOWERS
Today’s altar flowers are sponsored by the Sallent Da-Silva Family.
“We say a big THANK YOU to God for being blessed, once again, with another wonderful son. We could have not asked
for a better gift from Him. We also appreciate everyone who joins us today to celebrate such an important day in Biel's life,
particularly family members who have travelled from Barcelona to be present today. Lots of thanks to friends and
colleagues here in The Hague as well as those who took time out to honour our invitation. And finally, we'd like also to
thank the church for the positive support in making this occasion a success. God bless you all”.
If you wish to sponsor altar flowers, please contact Cheryl Carr at [email protected]
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Every week the Maintenance group completes many small repairs around the building. During the coming weeks about ten
broken windows around the building will be professionally repaired. If you find anything that needs repair in the building,
please email the Parish Office or Hans Bloemen at [email protected] . Thanks to Arthur Faulkner, Nigel Levido,
Frank Thijssen, Derick Petrauskas, and Rene van Son, for their support during our weekly maintenance Wednesdays.
CLEAN UP
Once again, we would kindly ask that you throw away your used coffee cups in the trash bin, and clean-up any spilled
coffee, tea, and crumbs in the atrium, bar or any other rooms in our Pastoral Centre.
For their FHC COMMUNITY SERVICE
activity, these children prepared one
hundred bagged lunches that included
sandwiches, a protein bar, and a juice
drink as well as clean-up kits for the
homeless which were distributed by the
Sisters of Charity in Rotterdam.
Well done children!
CHURCH CLEANING
Volunteers from across the Parish come together each month to clean away fingerprints on the
doors, polish the brass, dust, sweep and mop the church - everything necessary to keep our church
clean and sparkling. This month’s church cleaning will be held on
Saturday 25 February. Doors open at 08.30.
If you or a group you belong to are willing to volunteer to help keep God’s house in proper order
for all of us on the last Saturday morning of every month, please let our coordinator Dessu know
at [email protected] or 068 436 7983.
“I hope together we make things beautiful and perfect.”
The tenth edition of the Feel at Home Fair in The
Hague on 5 February was a huge success with nearly
four thousand visitors who filled the city hall. Thank
you to all our volunteers who manned our booth and
represented our parish in the biggest international
event in the region.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR COS HAND IN HAND REFUGEE PROJECT
We are looking for Dutch speaking volunteers interested in becoming a refugee buddy. There will be an initial interview
with Vluchtelingenwerk before being introduced to a refugee. In general, buddies are coupled for a period of six months,
and are free to make their appointments with each other regarding frequency. Since more activities are being planned, this
could be an added support for our new friends here in The Hague. If you are interested or have any questions, please write
to the Parish Office at [email protected] or call our COS Refugee Project volunteer coordinator
Saki at 065 534 2134.
WEDDING PLANS? WELCOME!
Couples intending to get married are welcome to do their paperwork and preparations in our parish. Once these papers are
approved by the diocese, they are valid worldwide. Please get in touch with our office six months prior to the event, to start
the procedure. We will need a recent copy of your Baptism Certificate. In case of an interreligious marriage (with a partner
from another denomination or a non-baptised person), a dispensation is required which takes a bit more time.
