Enriching Learning
At the start of this month we held
a highly successful Enrichment
Week. The activities encourage
our pupils to develop the
confidence to meet a range of
challenges – both intellectual and
physical.
Many pupils participated in a
range of visits – Year 7 camp, the
Ardèche and the St. Omer trip.
Pupils remaining on site travelled
back in history and ended the
week with a truly impressive
range of pupil-designed learning
activities and presentations by the
teams representing the House of
York, the House of Lancaster, the
Plantagenet and the Tudor
dynasties.
Feedback from pupils has been
overwhelmingly positive and we
look forward to continuing to
work with pupils to develop these
learning approaches further next
year.

Feedback on staged fighting
(by Ranulf Gull 8M)
The session began with a small
activity to get to know each of the
different people in our group, and
we were then given the choice of
which weapon we would wield in
our staged battle. We were
allowed to choose from a small
short-sword or a much larger twohanded long-sword, and were also
given a very in-depth safety talk.
new abilities that we had
acquired. We were then given
some hints to allow us to make
our performances as effective as
possible.
We were asked to pair up with
another group and show what we
had created so far, and provide
feed-back to each other.
We used the feed-back that we
had been given and incorporated
it in to making our performances
effective as possible.
We went to an open space in the
school field and talked through
different techniques and effective
strategies to show-case our
performance. Having done this,
we were then given the chance to
practise with our weapons and the
techniques in order to familiarise
ourselves with the strategies that
we would be deploying.
Following this, we were brought in
to a semi-circle to witness a
demonstration of how we would
create our battle scene, and after
the talk, we were once again
allowed out to practise with the
We showed our performances to
the group we had previously
paired with, and vice versa, before
we were brought back together
and had a discussion about
different skills that we were able
to utilize in this activity.
I believe this experience was
invaluable, and it was something
that will truly boost the class’
abilities in different areas. The
main skills developed were
communication, as in order to
create our piece of work we had to
make sure that we were
communicating properly with our
partner, to ensure our safety and
that we could convey the correct
message across to our audience.
It would also help boost our
awareness of different techniques
in drama, help hugely with
working effectively in a team and

also enhance our ability to
evaluate other people’s work to a
high standard.
In conclusion, I think that the
staged fighting was very well
managed and it was an excellent
experience for all that were given
the opportunity to take part in it.
Felt making review
(by Ben Kennedy 8D)
Firstly, I got some red and orange
wool and separated the fibres.
Then I crossed them over each
other then put the wool over a
ping pong ball and wet the wool in
warm soapy water, rolled it for 10
minutes until it was in a ball. I cut
the top of the felt so I could
remove the ping pong ball from
the flower shape.
3
students were to lead the same
workshop with 20 Year 6 pupils!
because I didn't think I'd enjoy it,
but it was my favourite activity.'
By the end of the morning, the
students had chosen the tasks
they were going to lead and went
away confidently for the weekend
ready to transform into Creative
Writing teachers on Tuesday!
The day arrived and our Primary
school pupils turned up brighteyed and ready to write (although
not altogether confident about
reading back)! We'd devised a
method of ensuring that no- one
left without sharing at least one of
their pieces of writing, however, it
soon became apparent that we
would have to find ways of
stopping everyone reading back
after every task!
Over break time, our Year 10
leaders took care of their charges
with Tom Luck and Chloe Read in
particular stepping into their roles
as the Pied Pipers, escorting
pupils to toilets and ensuring that
they were safe in amongst the
HHS students!
I got some green wool for the
leaves of the rose and did the
same as the red and orange wool.
Once I had done that, I cut out
leaves from the green felt and
then sewed them onto the rose,
creating my Tudor emblem.
Creative Writing Workshop
On Friday 4th and Tuesday 8th
July, we held our sixth annual 2day Creative Writing Workshop
for Year 10 Writers and Year 6
gifted and talented pupils from
our feeder primary schools.
Organised and run by Mrs
Dawson, she and 13 hand-picked
Year 10 students met in the library
on Friday and spent the whole
morning together writing virtually
continuously for the whole three
and a half hours! Five tasks were
completed with plenty of reading
back and critical analysis from all,
which boded well for Tuesday,
which was the day when these
Our primary pupils got to grips
with the workshop ethos and the
tasks very quickly indeed and
we're soon surprising and
delighting us all with the high
level of writing they were
producing. Ably-led by Jonah,
Dan and Fraser to start with,
followed by Emily and Olivia, the
workshop got speedily underway;
as ever, both Mrs Dawson and
students were very impressed by
the writing completed, as were our
visitors who wrote in their
evaluations: ' I enjoyed writing
poems', 'I was surprised at what I
wrote in task 3', 'I learnt different
ways of expressing myself' and 'I
was surprised with task 3 where
we had to personify an object
After break, the pupils rapidly
settled back down into their
writing tasks with even more
confidence than before and before
long, they were competing for the
privilege of reading back to
Amarlia and Morgan who had
everyone writing from the
viewpoint of different objects,
including wonky ironing boards
and dying mobile phone batteries!
Chloe and Tom were next up,
finding ways of getting the pupils
to write about a bizarre range of
subjects from sausages,
Wednesdays, fear and even Hate!
We were all amazed at how many
connections were made and how
skilfully pupils balanced facts and
opinions.
Finally, Ellen and Clara closed the
proceedings by encouraging our
primary pupils to choose an
opening and closing line from an
envelope and write the story or
poem which took us from A to B;
one of them nearly reduced Mrs
Dawson to tears with a profound
piece about the loss of all hope!
Parting summative comments
from our primary pupils are as
follows:
"an eye-opener"
"I really enjoyed today"
"I enjoyed reading out my work
and expressing myself"
"Awesome! I'd come back again!"
"Everything was different and
everyone was kind"
"Amazing!"

They thought the Year 10 students
were: 'good at explaining the
tasks', 'actually really very
helpful', '10/10', 'Excellent","5
star" and "they were very
friendly and helpful."

Congratulations to:
HHS Cricket Team
Hadleigh’s U-14 cricket team had
progressed from the group stages
of the county cup with victories
over East Bergholt and
Westbourne High. They met Sir
John Leman from Beccles in the
Quarter Final and won a close
battle with Jamie Colcomb
producing a match winning
innings to complete the run chase,
which qualified the team for
Finals day held at Woolpit CC.
After a fantastic victory in the first
match against Stowmarket,
Hadleigh faced St. Benedicts,
4
defeaters of last year’s winners
Bungay, in the final.
Captain Daniel Shanks lost the
toss but was surprised when the
opposition captain chose to bat
first, which suited Hadleigh who
prefer to chase targets.
St Benedicts had one talented
opening batsmen, and the plan
was simple, give him a single and
keep him off strike. Jack Orriss
tore through two of the Bennies
batsmen to leave them 12 for 2
early on. The plan was working as
the Bennies star player became
frustrated as wickets fell all
around him. Wickets for Marcus
Peters and Elske Kelly made it 43
for 4, when finally Will Bevan
dismissed the Bennies opener,
clean bowled. Another wicket for
Jack Orriss and the Hadleigh
Juggernaut as the team is now
known, had restricted their
opponents to 63 for 6.
Set a target of 64 to score off 14
overs Captain Shanks and Elske
Kelly set about chasing the score
down at a steady rate, but with the
score at 16 Elske was dismissed
trying to smash the opening
bowler over his head. Callum
Jeffrey was bowled 2 balls later to
give Bennies hope of a collapse, 16
for 2. In came Jamie Colcomb
who steadied the ship as Hadleigh
moved to 30 without a chance
being given.
Captain Shanks survived a run out
appeal, and was timing the ball so
well that when he did give a
chance of a catch, he'd hit it so
hard that they dropped the catch.
The pair got their heads down and
played a very controlled and
calculated innings.
With 3 overs to spare the team
cruised to victory! County
champions!
St Benedicts 63 for 6, Orriss 3 for
11, Beven 1 for 12, Peters 1 for 7,
Shanks 0 for 4, Downie 0 for 12,
Kelly 1 for 12.
Hadleigh 65 for 2, Shanks 45 not
out, Kelly 2, Jeffery 0, Colcomb 9
not out
