Updates on what’s happening in West Point
“RIVER DAYS WAS A ROCKIN SUCCESS”
If you weren’t looking up at the sky on Saturday July 8 you missed what was described as the best firework show West Point has seen in years.
With the support of selected business owners, citizens, and a few politicians, River Days hosted its very own “Thunder at the Point!” But don’t
worry if you missed it this year, next year is promised to be even better. Although I don’t know how that can happen because this year was
Awesome! The fireworks lit the sky for over 45 minutes. People could see them from all around. Boaters were even lined up on the river
watching in amazement.
But that wasn’t all of the excitement that happened during the three day event.
First up on Thursday we held our annual Sunday Best Pageant. Winners for the pageant are as follows:
Baby Miss and Master: Jordyn Johnson and Aaron Keith, Toddler Miss and Master: Zoë Sandergeld and Jordan Steele, Little Miss and Master:
Trinity Simpson and Shawn Ray. A very special thank you to all of our participates for coming out for this event. We hope to see all of you next
year. Also we would like to thank Amy Phillips for being the M/C of the event and for all of our judges. We appreciate all of your help!
Throughout the three day event, we had rides provided by C&J Attractions, we had vendors, two horseshoe tournaments, karaoke provided by
Tommy Tunes, a cake spin, and a jail. Friday night our concert was performed by the “Muddy Roads” band.
On Saturday we had our annual River Days Parade. Congressman Ron Lewis was our Grand Marshall. The parade hosted several dignitaries,
floats, fire trucks, along with most of our pageant winners and City Council Members. We would like to thank all of our participants and our
judges for coming out and welcome you each back next year! Also a very special thank you goes out to Vernon Curl for organizing the parade
line up.
Later that day, we hosted a “Battle of the Bands” Concert/Contest. We had 6 bands that performed for 6 hours. The band names are as follows:
Die Silent, Prisoners of Rock, The Lonesome Cowboys, Unchained Soul’s, Harbl, and Individually Twisted. The winner of the contest was
“Unchained Souls” who won a cash prize. The runner up was “Die Silent”. All bands did an excellent job. We would like to thank 101.5
The Point for the advertising they provided along with Pepsi for supplying all of our banners. We would also like to thank Josh Roederer, Brian
Baldridge and Roger Jacobs for judging this event.
We had an unplanned air show late Saturday afternoon. There were two air gliders flying over the festival and the river for about 10-15 minutes
giving our festival quite a show.
The 2006 River Days Festival was a huge success. It took many thoughtful hours planning all activities. There are a lot of “Thank You’s” that
need to go out! We would like to thank all of you that served on the planning committee: Jennifer Nevitt, Missy Williams, Butch Curl, Jon
Baldridge, Joe Short, Gaye Moore, Roszelle Moore, Gina Carnell, Josh Roederer, Fran Moore, Tommy Carnell and Eddie Moore who came up
with the wonderful ideas for the events. Thank you to the ones that donated all of those baked goods for the bake sale. Thank you to Butch, Jon,
Eugene and Jonathan for setting off those awesome fireworks. Thanks to all of you that worked in our River Days Booth. Thank you to Eddie
Moore and Tommy Carnell for running our Sound System for our Battle of the Bands Contest and keeping the music going during the down
time. We all enjoyed this festival so much.
Thank you to all of the Fire Work Donators: Granny’s Attic, Gene Smith, Terry Woolsey, Ms. Albro, Barker Lodge, Hall Pump and Supply Co.,
Mac’s Fire Protection, Concerned Citizen United, Beverly’s Mobile Home Park, Duvall Equipment, Tommy Tunes, Dependable Coating, Bill
Hay, Joe Short and Fran Moore, Gary King, Tom Zaker, Ted and Jackie Aikin, Mike and Cheryl Bickel, Dennis Wren, Your Lucky Parrot, Billy
and Marsha Ash, Loretta Crady, Rhonda Sample, Charles Williams, Doug Goodman, Richie Trent Ladies Aux. and all of those who donated
anonymously. Without all of your donations the Fire Work Show would not have been possible!
Planning is now under way for next year’s festival. If you have any ideas, or would like to help, contact City Hall at (502) 922-4260.
Donations for next years fireworks are now being accepted.

THANKSGIVING
The Family Point, FRYSC News
With donations from Hardin County Fiscal Court, City of West Point and Community Action, the 2006 Youth Summer Recreation
Program was a success. Due to funding, the program only ran 4 weeks, but they were fun-filled and the kids got to go swimming
(every week), skating, bowling and go to Kentucky Down Under. Mr. Ford, West Point School’s P.E. teacher did a wonderful job of
coordinating and running the program. Thank you to everyone who donated funds or volunteered to chaperone a trip. Every effort
was appreciated and helped to make West Point’s kids have a nicer summer.
The Family Point, FRYSC Advisory Council’s next two regular meetings are – September 29th at 8:30 a.m. and November 17th at 8:30
a.m. The public is invited to attend these meetings.
September 13th, the West Point School children will have their hearing tested. September 27th, the students will have their vision
tested, by the West Point Lions Club. Thank you to the Lions Club for this wonderful and much needed service.
Hopefully, the Hardin Memorial Hospital’s “Wellness on Wheels” van will be coming to West Point some afternoon in October, to
give Flu Shots. Watch the community sign, at 4th & Main, for dates & times.
The FRYSC will be taking applications for Christmas assistance (food, clothing & toys), in October. Proof of income for everyone in
the household will have to be provided with the application. Watch the community sign for these dates.
October 23rd – 27th is “Red Ribbon Week”, which is a week for concentrating on Drug, Alcohol & Tobacco Prevention. The FRYSC
will be coordinating events and educational information for all West Point School students, during the week. PLEASE watch for the
information that your children will be bringing home and go over it with them, as a family. It really does take the entire community,
working together, to help keep our children safe.
The FRYSC will be taking applications for the Winter Heating Assistance, again this year. Watch the community sign, for dates &
times.

Public Notice
To all occupants and residents:
The City will be conducting leak tests in the sanitary sewer system by blowing smoke into
these pipes. This smoke will reveal sources of sewer odors in your neighborhood as well as
places where storm and other surface waters are entering the sanitary system.
A special nontoxic smoke will be used in these tests. This smoke is manufactured for this
purpose, leaves no residuals or stains and has no effects on plant and animal life. The
smoke has a distinctive, but not unpleasant odor. Visibility and odor last only a few minutes, where there is adequate ventilation.
Because the plumbing appliances in your house or building are connected to the sanitary
sewer system, some of the smoke may enter your house if the:
- vents connected to your building’s sewer pipes are inadequate, defective or improperly installed
- traps under sinks, tubs, basins, showers and other drains are dry, defective, improperly installed or missing
- pipes, connection and seals of the wastewater drain system in and under your
building are damaged, defective, have plugs missing or improperly installed
All residents are advised that if traces of this smoke or its odor enter your house or building, it is an indication that gases and odors from the sewer may also enter. These can be
both unpleasant and dangerous as well as a health hazard to the occupants. Location, identification and correction of the source of smoke that enters your house is urgently advised.
While the City will render all possible cooperation, the correction of any defects in the
pipes and sewer on private property is the responsibility of the owner. The services of a
professional plumber are advised.
If you have any questions or desire more information, please telephone the city offices during regular office hours.
